Info: 2006 GOUT DVD using 'Faces' PCM Sound?

ADM - I think your questions are answered here:

I have done a full digital transfer of the DC/Faces audio with side change gaps patched to sample accuracy - upconverted to 48k in ProTools HD, which I have found to be a very transparent scheme. I have not yet verified that it is identical in timing to that of the DVD, but it would be unlikely if it was not. And, if for some reason it WAS off, that can be fixed.

I also have a cut a very high quality analogue transfer of the Dolby Stereo (35mm) mix from P&S Laserdisc – also at 48k. It also has all side change gaps patched, as well as all previously documented problems fixed. It has not been timed to match the DC/Faces track yet, but I will probably get to that as soon as I finish up with the monomix. There has also been some interest expressed in the’85 remix, which is relatively low on my list, but I will get to it eventually.

Originally, the plan was to prepare all 4 mixes to run in sync with video from the DC/Faces Laserdiscs, and make them available to the group. Hopefully, the DVD will be identical - if not, it can be adjusted. and here:Originally posted by: Belbucus
There ARE two points where the DC/Faces audio drops synch with that of the DVD (not including the DVD layer change).

1) The cut from Mos Eisly exterior to beginning of Han’s confrontation with Greedo.

2) Oddly enough, at what would have been the last reel changeover when projected theatrically (probably just a coincidence).

I’ve adjusted the DC/Faces file for both.

The DVD layer change, as with the 2004 DVD, seems to fall at the cut between “Terminate her immediately” and the FALCON in hyperspace.

In preparing this for mass consumption, I have a couple of questions. First, would it in any way make it more convenient to split the file for DVD layers 1 and 2, or should I keep it as one big continuous file? Second, is there anyway to identify an exact start point relative the video for synch purposes? Or perhaps a sample number corresponding to a specific frame?

How I learned to stop worrying and love the 2004 dvd's

Andrew-Kenneth - it's great (for you) that you have found a way to enjoy the '04 discs. As you can see, most people here can't overlook the destructive effect of the SE changes. For me personally, even if they were the OUT, I couldn't overlook the color/contrast issues. It is not simply a case of more blue, more color - the palette has been changed considerably. And no amount of brightness can restore detail lost in shadow areas. However, if you're happy, I'm happy for you.

I am not one of the people who insists on claiming that Lucas has 4k scans sitting around that he is deliberately withholding. I'm pretty sure the O-neg was pulled apart for the SE and that a new anamorphic edition isn't just as easy as pressing a button.

However, I'm certain that LFL has enough materials at its disposal that they could make a pristine hi-res video edition of the OUT, albeit with the investment of some time and cost, which could easily be recouped on the disc sales. The only thing that is lacking is the will to do it.

Now Jim Ward (or whoever) has talked Lucas into releasing these, against his will. Lucas has said "now we'll see which versions the fans really want" (or whatever). They are selling well, LFL will make a lot of money and Jim Ward (or whoever) will probably press for a better release in future, and Lucas may agree. Whatever way you look at it, the OUT release is a positive step for OUT fans - we're certainly better off than we were before these came out.

The issue of "owing" doesn't come into it. The films should, of course, be preserved as well as possible from a historical perspective.

Mike, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on color correction and recovering detail from dark areas from the '04 set. It seems to me that there is a lot more than an across the board CC (it's almost akin to a full DI). Do you think it's possible to return to the original colors, or are you not attempting that? Similarly, with the loss of detail (illustrated nicely in your "Crunch Time" editorial) - isn't there stuff that's gone, never to return?

Okay. I read everything Go-Mer said in the Try to take it easy with the Lucas bashing thread. I didn't have a problem with any of that either. Make no mistake, I think the prequels and SE suck. But I don't have anything against people who like them, especially if they have nothing against me and even go out of their way to find points of agreement with the tone of this forum generally.
