Sonic the Hedgehog had a slight alteration to the end credits on the Blu-ray release compared to the theatrical release.

[WARNING: SPOILER ALERT, YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT IF YOU WATCHED THE MOVIE]

There’s no credit for Coleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Tails in the mid-credits scene in the theatrical release but she is credited on the Blu-ray release.
Makes sense that they would retroactively add a credit for Tails’ voice since it’s one of the most spoiled scenes in the movie, and probably one of the most spoiled mid-credits scenes in all of modern cinema.

Added. Can you provide a source?

TV Tropes referenced it in “The Second Visitor” section of the Characters page.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/SonicTheHedgehog2020
And I found a Korean-sourced WEBRip that leaked before the film’s digital release and it still has the theatrical credits which doesn’t credit “The Second Visitor”.

Info: Mono soundtracks that were butchered with 5.1 remixes in later releases
Time

There is an inversion with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

It was originally in mono but Studio Ghibli was apparently going to do a stereo remix for it’s DVD release back in 2003 and due to some reasons (either the people behind it were disappointed with how it sounded or the ultra-purist that is Miyazaki disapproved it), it was canned and both the DVD and Blu-ray releases still use the original 1984 mono mix.
Even the dubbed versions (except for the recent Russian theatrical re-dub and the German dub) made over two decades after the film’s original release were in mono.

But what is more interesting is that a stereo remix already exists in a Drama Album containing the film’s full audio (kinda like The Story of Star Wars) in full stereo, with some alternate music cues and sound effects.
It was released in both CD and LP record back in 1989. It actually breathes new life into the original Japanese audio, even if the purist in me wants to stick with the mono mix.

Problem is the Drama Album is currently out-of-print.

Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)
Time

I really hope hairy_hen makes isolated score tracks for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi since the currently existing ones are not as accurate as hairy_hen’s isolated score Star Wars.
Also, is it possible to use the 24/192 2018 Walt Disney Records soundtrack remaster to base the isolated score on with the Anthology and Special Edition-only tracks just being upsamples of the existing CDs.
Even better if these newly updated isolated score tracks are actually 24/192.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Hi, guys, I know I haven’t updated you in quite a while and it’s because I haven’t really been working on Despecialized.

One reason was that I have been waiting for the new 4K Blu-Rays to come out and now they have and together with the 4K77 project, they should be a great source for a version 3.0 - they do seem to offer have more detail than the 2011 BDs, even though the DNR is pretty awful, but I will definitely try to add grain to them - ideally real scanned 35mm grain, which I might even be able to extract from Star Wars scans to keep it super-authentic.

Right now there are several problems with using the new UHD masters though.

  1. The UHD Blu-Rays haven’t come out in Europe yet, as far as I know.
  2. They are really expensive, so I’ll have to think twice before purchasing them when they do.
  3. Even if I buy them, I don’t even have a UHD player, let alone UHD BD drive, so I haven’t got the ability to rip them or even view them.
  4. Even if I could rip them or get them in some other way, I have no idea how to properly work with HDR streams.

So, if someone could help me with the proper HDR workflow, it would be appreciated. I don’t even really want to make the final result 4K HDR - I’d like the result to be a regular BD, as I feel like this way the sources will match better and there shouldn’t be a significant loss in quality anyway but would like to source the HDR BDs to use the better dynamic range for color-grading.

But maybe, in the end, it would be best to just use the regular BD versions of the new transfers, which would eliminate all the above problems and I could work as I am used to.

The main reason work on Despecialized has slowed down significantly in recent years is that I have a full-time job in the visual effects industry and, frankly also more of a social life, so I have far less time to work on Despecialized and, to be honest, also less drive, because after coming home from work, where I stare at a monitor all day and work on VFX, I seldom feel like doing the same thing at home.

Another reason is that the 4K77 version is wonderful and for my own viewing pleasure it is quite sufficient and I actually really enjoy it for its retro-charm.

But it is still more of a preservation of what the experience of watching a slightly beat-up print in drive-in theater would have been rather than what a proper modern transfer of a milestone film should look like and that’s what Despecialized v3.0 should supplement, when it gets finished.

In my country, the COVID-19 crisis, at least so far, hasn’t reached a point where it would prevent me from going to work, so I’m still working, albeit, since there’s no new productions being made, the post production side of things is winding down as well. But after the current big work-project is finished, which should be at the end of may, I’d like to take some time off and finally get going on Despecialized again. I’m not sure, though, if, given the current economic climate, I’ll be able to afford to do that.

If it would help at all, I can rip the UHD disks and you can download from my server. Let me know if interested.

That would probably be considered piracy. Harmy wants to do things the legal way.

Project Threepio (Star Wars OOT subtitles)
Time

CatBus said:

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but if anyone understands both Japanese and English very well, I have a question. I have two sets of Japanese subtitles. Right now, I’m using what I believe are the original theatrical subtitles. The second set I believe is the home video translation. I suspect that the theatrical translations were rushed and not as good as the later home video translations, but I have no way to verify this on my own.

So if you happen to know both Japanese and English well enough to compare two Japanese translations and tell me which one best captures the meaning of the original English, I have a job for you! Let me know if you’re interested.

Why not put them both on Project Threepio and label them correctly?

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

I hope the Despecialized v3.0 Trilogy would be in actual 4K and not just sourced from 4K masters.
HDR would be a real boon too, and would be an edge over 4K77/4K80/4K83.
It would be a complete revelation for someone who wants a painstakingly restored version of the Original Trilogy sourced from the original negatives without CGI and Maclunky.

I would prefer the 4K 35mm Trilogy over Despecialized 4K since I think it’s more authentic and it looks kinda clean in the DNR versions but a version of the OUT with the extra clarity and redone transitions of the Special Editions is a game-changer, it would definitely be the cleanest way to watch the OUT and could be the best way for some.

When this happens, the only thing that the official 4K releases have over Despecialized/4K 35mm would be the Dolby Atmos track, since I don’t know how you can do a remix of the OUT using a mixture of the theatrical/1993 LaserDisc mixes and maybe the 1997 DTS mix or even the recent Atmos mix. And even then, you can just turn on Dolby Surround Upmixer or DTS Neural:X on either the stereo or the 5.1 mixes and it will still sound fairly decent.

Info: Recommended Editions of Disney Animated (and Partially Animated) Features

I just watched The Sword in the Stone on Disney+. Definitely NOT one of Disney’s greatest works (just a, admittedly humorous, series of events before Arthur pulls the sword after not being mentioned for most of the film) but that’s not why it’s brought up on this board so often.

I watched it because I know its DNR reputation and I’ve seen the results. I also saw it was one of the films available in 4K, which I took to mean a new restoration/not using the flawed Blu-Ray master. So, I made it a point to watch it (AFTER I got some Star Wars in my system, including The Mandolorian 😃 )

In short, it looks FAR better than the Blu-Ray/streaming screenshots I’ve seen. Granted, the linework is wonky, but it’s too sharp to be the fault of anything other than the xeroxing done to make the cels. It’s hard to just see in these screen shots but the lines change and you can see the pencil markings that made it to the cels and film. In short, the films looks great… er, in a “replicates the original art” way rather than “replicates the film” way. (Keep in mind I can only get screenshots off a laptop that’s not 1080p; please account for that, it looked great on my TV).

https://imgur.com/UeuGneL

Also, I saw this Hollywood Reporter story. In summary, people seem to be warming to the “Contains Outdated Cultural Depictions”; they want more but I don’t think we have to worry about films getting edited as of yet (the crows are still in Dumbo)

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/disney-outdated-cultural-depictions-disclaimer-raises-questions-say-advocacy-groups-1255284?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=THR Breaking News_2019-11-16 11:07:00_tberesford&utm_term=hollywoodreporter_breakingnews

I saw that The Black Cauldron is also in 4K Dolby Vision, which is interesting since Disney pretty much treats it with the cold shoulder and has never released it on Blu-ray, let alone 4K UHD.

Also, the linework is supposed to be wonky, considering it’s a xerox-era film.
The terrible DNR on the Blu-ray was supposed to combat the wonkiness inherent to the xerography technology.
A good restoration of a xerox-era film should embrace the wonkiness.

4K restoration on Star Wars

4K83 > Disney+ > Despecialized Edition v2.5 > Blu-ray
No offense to Harmy but I think the Despecialized Edition is obsolete for Star Wars and Return of the Jedi (at least their current forms).
Team Negative One did a really great job on their restorations and I could say that they look better than the official releases, and this isn’t just my bias towards the original cuts speaking.
I only keep the Despecialized Edition for The Empire Strikes Back and it’s only because 4K80 is taking a bit long.

As for the Disney+ 4K, it’s a great improvement over the Blu-ray and it’s definitely the best release of the Special Editions. Regardless if it’s actually an upscale or if it’s the 4K transfer that Reliance made.

Let’s just wait for Disney to release the 4K masters on disc.

A 4K Revisited from Adywan would be great when the 4K Ultra HD discs come out. And Harmy’s 4K Despecialized would still give the cleanest (though not as authentic as TN1’s 4K releases) presentations for the original unaltered trilogy.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I’m guessing that despite being in 4K Dolby Vision, these releases are mere 1080p upscales.
The Special Editions were only mastered in 1080p, and they have to restore the unaltered edition and release it as-is or recreate the 2011 Special Editions from scratch with the new restoration if they want to do a native 4K release.

I really hope that these are just placeholder transfers and that the inevitable 4K releases next year are actually the unaltered editions and not smeary 1080p upscales.

If that doesn’t happen, well, at least we have 4K77 and 4K83, with 4K80 coming in the future.

Info: Toei classic anime - Rumor has it... :(

Molly said:

Could be A, could be B.

As far as Sailor Moon goes, Madman is said to have (for at least the first season) gotten Dynit’s masters and synched up the Viz resources to them. Dynit’s release (aka the R2IT) is pretty much the platinum-iridium standard for the series.

TMS has their issues but they’re plenty competent enough with their remasters. (Lupin III, Magic Knight Rayearth)

Tell that to the “remastered” 4K Ultra HD releases of Tomorrow’s Joe 2, Space Adventure COBRA, Lupin III: The Mystery of Mamo and The Castle of Cagliostro.
They are DNR’d to hell and back. It honestly looks like the dreaded Blu-ray remaster of Disney’s The Sword in the Stone.
At least Studio Ghibli’s standard 4K remastered Blu-ray (not Ultra HD) of The Castle of Cagliostro is still on-print and despite being the same 4K remaster as the one on the UHD, the DNR isn’t excessive as in the Blu-ray, retaining some fine grain even though it has a moderate amount of DNR.

Also, what I’m more concered about is that there are rumours that Toei’s Blu-ray releases of some of their much older animated movies (like '60s and '70s) like The Great Adventure of Horus: Prince of the Sun, are LaserDisc upscales.
I don’t believe this since the Blu-ray for Horus has some better detail (though not drastically) than the DVD version.
And also, Studio Ghibli had a 36-bit colour grade of Horus in Panasonic Master Grade Video Coding (basically an earlier, primitive version of HDR) for the Isao Takahata box set so it’s less likely that it’s an upscaled LaserDisc master.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977) Stereo Mix (LD rip available)
Time

The LaserDisc also has this stereo mix.
https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/06995/7074-AS/Many-Adventures-of-Winnie-the-Pooh-The

LaserDisc sounds better since the VHS still has some noise but digital LaserDisc audio is CD-quality and sounds much clearer.

This actually sounds really great. Ironically, it sounds more stereophonic than the 5.1 remix on the Blu-ray/DVD.
I would definitely do a custom Blu-ray (and also custom DVD for the open matte 4:3 version) with this stereo remix, the original mono mix (from another LaserDisc) and the 5.1 remix from the Blu-ray.

Request: Japanese Fox Searchlight Pictures budget Blu-ray/DVD cover templates
Time

I really hope you can make templates based on these Japanese Fox Searchlight Pictures releases like the following:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B07D2HRGTN/ (Blu-ray)
https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B07D2GTPSX/ (DVD)
There are many more here:
https://video.foxjapan.com/library/searchlight/

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find pictures of the spine outside of Yahoo! Auctions Japan (just look up the Japanese title for a Fox Searchlight Pictures release in Yahoo! Auctions Japan).
I just want an editable template of these Fox Searchlight covers. Nothing more, nothing less.

I really love these Fox Searchlight Pictures designs and I want to see how they would look if they were modified for Star Wars.
Or, it would also be a “What if Star Wars was released under Fox Searchlight Pictures instead of 20th Century Fox?” kind of thing.
But, I don’t have enough Photoshop skills to start from scratch.

And for a Trilogy set, I found this slightly different but still matching Wes Anderson Collection which can be the basis for a Fox Searchlight Pictures Star Wars Trilogy set:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B079TGF639 (Blu-ray)
https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B079T66H2M (DVD)

Can someone please do them for me?
I trust FrankT for this request the most.
Thanks in advance!

Idea: 'Happily Ever After' (1990) - 35mm print opportunity - for sale on ebay...
Time

If you get the full 35mm print, I don’t think a full 4K scan would do wonders to this film, as the animation is pretty low-budget (as is expected from Filmation), even though it’s a gigantic leap from their typical fare.
I think 1080p would suffice.

I was only hoping for at least a LaserDisc rip to surface but a full 35mm print is like a gift from heaven.
Which was I was really hoping for someone to scan it in HD.
All the seeds in torrent sites are down and the YouTube versions are either poor VHS rips or the aforementioned Fox DVD.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/35mm-Color-Cartoon-Feature-Film-HAPPILY-EVER-AFTER-1990/254218231812

This film is actually a guilty pleasure of mine and I love some of the songs, this film was a part of my childhood.

I really hope someone can buy this, scan it and restore it.

This is a Filmation movie and the original masters (and sound masters too) of most of their library were destroyed by Hallmark when they got the rights to Filmation’s library, keeping only international distribution masters in PAL which were sped up.

Plus, the Fox DVD sloppily censored some of the violence which was in the VHS version.

And, an HD remaster is impossible now that the original 35mm film elements are lost.

This is our closest chance of ever getting an HD remaster of this film.
