STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

Unbelievable tribute to Sir Alec Guinness’ Obi Wan. Impression was spot on, and even though the dialogue about wisdom/philosophy was a little over the top, I totally believed that was the same character from the '77 film.

Glad the fight didn’t last long. If they had Old Hermit Ben doing the flipping and kicking it would have been laughable. Fitting end to a long rivalry, despite the fact I didn’t care much about it to begin with.

Seeing both a Jedi and a Sith simultaneously believe they’d find redemption through Vader was awesome, and was yet another example of “things I hate about the PT that are mostly alright in this context”.

Getting better! Still a bit bright and contrasty and maybe too saturated?

Sorry I was harsh on the other thread.

It’s fine! Any feedback is good feedback.

What is your source for the JSC? Is it althor’s version on MySpleen?

Yes, that’s right.

IIRC the JSC is actually composed of two different prints spliced together. There are a few places where the last frame of a shot has different framing and colour balance to the previous frames, meaning a blanket correction of a unadjusted capture can be yeild inconsistent results over the whole film. I think the brightness level is higher to begin with too, at least compared to the other common widescreen laserdisc releases.

Good to know. I suppose to accommodate I’ll make two unique color treatments (from what I’ve seen so far one will have to be red leaning and the other cyan leaning) and eyeball for each shot to figure out which print is which. Unless that’s been figured out in the past? I haven’t seen.

Do you know what the deal is with the other two films, then? Thus far all I’ve observed is that Empire has a near monochrome look for Hoth, and Jedi has some weird green/yellow tendencies (the exterior Tatooine shots are drenched in yellow)

OT Japanese Special Collection - Single Pass Regrade (* unfinished project *)
Time

I consider this a personal project, as I’m certain a number of people on this website could handle it much better than I.

My goal is to color correct each film in the Star Wars Japanese Special Collection, using the usual resources as a reference, while applying only a single correction to each entire film. The JSC is unique in that it utilizes a source separate from that of the 1993 Definitive Edition/2006 GOUT (possibly from a 1st generation interpositive of the O-Neg?), and yields substantially different colors and idiosyncrasies as a result. I’d like to see what these differences look like with the appropriate color treatment applied on top of them.

So far, I’ve completed a first pass of Episode IV:

Any feedback/criticism would be appreciated.

4K restoration on Star Wars

Maybe they’d put out a bonus disc containing scenes and segments from the original versions that have been remastered, allowing an editor to recreate a mostly OOT. Maybe that would satiate those in the company who want to put it out and those who want to resist doing so for whatever reason, misplaced loyalty to GL or otherwise.

Wouldn’t that encourage a hell of a lot of pirating, though?

A comparison of reel 2 part 1:

Since the binary sunset closeup was the only shot in my project to conform to the '77 version instead of the SE because of the degraded source, I decided to recreate the SE change using the Silver Screen Edition footage. At least this way it is true to the spirit of the Special Edition.

This is it. This is the original 1977 photography that history abandoned. I’d be perfectly content with this if we never got a new release of the film ever again.

Looks very nice as well!

Thanks! It seems the JSC may also be a reliable, if not consistent color basis for the OT. This is what I managed to pull from ESB:

Once again I don’t know how accurate this is to the original photography (I believe the consensus is that Hoth was always on the blue side), but I’d certainly have no complaints if the Blu-ray releases had looked this way all along (perhaps without all the compression artifacts 😄).

Somewhere in between your regrade and the above image would be perfect.

I’m not sure if you mean inbetween the untouched JSC and my grade, or my grade and Dre’s grade, but either way I understand.
