The Spongebob Squarepants Movie - 35mm Re Creation (a WIP)
Time

Tiny update:

While I’m still not really sure how to go about recreating the filmic look, I’ve discovered something quite valuable to the progression of this project. Before the theatrical release, Paramount released several high quality renders of stills from the movie to the marketing department for the German release of the film, to use for lobby cards and other general advertising. These were released publicly on December twelfth of 2004. Note that this was still several months before the first official home release. There is enough evidence to suggest that the movie’s palette was indeed changed to a noticeable degree, likely to more closely match the fourth season that was airing in between the theatrical and home releases. You can see this in one comparison here:

I could be wrong about the origins of the publicity photo, but until then I’ll take it into consideration as a reliable color source

Info: Toy Story on 35mm, and other early Pixar films for that matter...
Time

I can’t find it at the moment, but a certain documentary on Toy Story from '99 spends a great deal of time explaining the tedious process of how the computer animation was processed in layers onto the negative. While it’s true that the digital master is a generation above any print that was struck, the Toy Story archived in the National Film Registry is the one we saw in the theaters in '95. It’s the version that still had that lengthy filmic rendering process retained, but in all releases past the VHS that achievement is, for all intents and purposes, cut out of the film.

Not to say there’s anything wrong with the new master; a digital render of a completely digital movie isn’t the worse thing that could happen to a film.

I wish you the best in your endeavor, it would be criminal for Disney to refuse this restoration. From the little I’ve seen online you’ve produced a quality that could probably sway George Lucas himself to issue an official release. It would be truly amazing if not long after the release of Rouge One, that we all get to see the direct continuation of that story with the original Star Wars in theatres again.

But here’s a dismal thought that crossed my mind: if your work is approved for release, could you imagine Disney perhaps further modifying it, in a way that would ‘satisfy its creator’ per say?

“Only through me can you achieve a power greater then any jedi. And only through me, because im the last of the jedi’s opposition. As in, one of the sith. I’m a sith, Anakin. I’ve spent the last five years using elaborate made-up stories and painfully obvious implications and you haven’t picked up on a single one. But I’m sure you brush that off as being ‘quiet and contemplative’, a real Man of Steel you are. Now you know, so hurry up and listen to me, only I have the power to save the ones you love. Well, I don’t. Not yet, probably never, but I’ll wait until you’ve committed to irreversible actions to tell you. Any questions?”

“…What did you say?”

“Use my knowledge. I beg you.”

“Wait a minute…YOU’RE THE SITH LORD”

SpongeBob SquarePants - 1997 Pilot Debut Reconstruction (* unfinished project *)
Time

Preview of the second pass:

Unfortunately this is about as close as it’ll get to the original broadcast master, there’s not much more color information I can pull out of this release. I’m trying to stay as faithful as possible to the animation cels/VHS tape, without crushing too much detail, a problem I’ve already ran into thus far.

Stay tuned, and thanks for the feedback.

So I’ve been working for a little while on color correction, as it seems the picture is in dire need of ‘de-purpling’ much akin to the 2004 Star Wars masters. I theorize that an original master was made to show once to Nick in '97, and once following the KCA’s to debut the show’s first episode.

After the remainder of Season One was completed, with a cemented introduction song, however, the original 35mm elements were remastered to remove the original intro and replace it with a bubble transition two years later, in order to fit with the remainder of the show. The master was definitely done incorrectly for whatever reason, as evident when comparing the contrast-corrected VHS recording of the original master, to the current master used for all subsequent reruns and home video releases.

I also believe in the recent HD releases, there was a considerable amount of noise removal to remove the film grain from the 35mm elements (35mm elements meaning most everything you see, save for a few post-animation alterations that bring a considerable amount of motion smearing and interlacing with them).

Using mainly correctly photographed animation cels from the first season as a reference, as well as the VHS Pilot, I’ve begun with a single LUT to serve as a correction across the entire episode. Then just to see how much detail I could pull out of the iTunes master, I upscaled three corrected frames to 4k and added grain to combat the waxy appearance, then downscaled them back to their original size:

I think this correction (especially the last one) may be a tad contrast-heavy, but all of this is still a work in progress.

Be afraid:

“Rouge One has the most expensive CG [human?] rendering for a film ever, and it’s for the original actor behind Grand Moff Tarkin, Peter Cushing.”

Spending so much effort on his inclusion in this movie makes me scared he may very well be Snoke. I can’t say I’m looking forward to any of that.

MakeMKV Beta Consistently crashes once my BD rip hits about 8000MB
Time

Running MakeMKV Beta v1.9.9 on a Windows 7 32 bit OS, ripping a BD of about 40GB (though the part I’m ripping only has about 30)

Hardware:

HDD - WD 1TB Black My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 NTFS formatted

Blu-ray drive - COOLEAD- White Slim External USB Blu-Ray Player External USB (I’m aware it’s not the best drive but for all other purposes it performs fine)

The disc isn’t scratched in the slightest, in fact its brand new. But after the MKV file reaches about 8000MB, (I should note, this is in an estimation of either 400MB more or fewer than 8000, its never consistent), the drive begins to make significantly louder processing sounds, then i receive this error in the log:

Error ‘Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:1090’ occurred while reading ‘/BDMV/STREAM/00800.m2ts’ at offset ‘9378920448’

Ideas on ripping iTunes Extras
Time

I’m starting work on a fan edit of a movie, and I wanted to utilize a specific deleted scene. Unfortunately, this feature is unique in that it is the only feature of the movie exclusive to the iTunes release.

A few years ago it may have been more feasible to extract the downloaded extra by opening the .ite file and removing the DRM of the individual m4v file by way of a converter, but to my understanding iTunes extras now operate entirely online through the program.

I feel using some sort of screen recorder would yield less than adequate results. Would there be any possibility of getting a hold of the extra’s source video file?

What a bizarre list. Of the two on there that are actual fan edits, one has never been seen by the author, and the other is just a bare bones TPM edit that cuts out a few bad parts. Still, any publicity is good publicity.

Also:

There’s no news yet about where fans could see the movie, or whether a public screening is even legal, but there’s no rest for the weary, especially if you’re a Star Wars fan. They also just announced ways other fans can take it upon themselves to clean up their original version of The Empire Strikes Back as well.
