Approaching Star Wars canon
Time

Connor MacLeod said:

The best attempt at a consistent canon was between 1983 and 1998. After ROTJ and before the prequels. It was pretty consistent then.

The continuity was in flux even then. Ulic Qel-Droma’s backstory as related in the Dark Empire endnotes doesn’t line up perfectly with what we saw in Tales of the Jedi, as just one example. That said, the pre-1999 EU was more accepting of artistic license than what followed afterward.

Muxing up Movie quotes

“Hey, I’m tired of talkin’. When you gonna do me, huh?”

“Oh, you’re gonna savour this.”

“Uh-huh, uh-huh. I wanna real long one.”

“You do?”

“I wanna smell myself, umm-hmm. Can I taste my skin when it gets crispy? Sweat’s what makes it tasty, don’tcha know?”

“Now who’s the chatterbox? Now who’s moving his lips?”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. You’re still gonna do me, now, aren’t ya? You’re still gonna‽”

“Maybe.”

“Chronic insult to the frontal lobe. This one will write me a thank-you note.”

“It’s like a thousand points of light.”

“A hundred-and-thirty volts brain via scalp. Generalized electrical seizure.”

“I like the dirty talk! All that volt and electrode stuff! You wanna buzz me more? When I get a little I always wanna lot.”

“You’re a piggy little thing. You want more?”

“I told you I got the itch. I’m burnin’ up! I’m a hunka electric corpuscles!”

“First we work. You scratch my itch.”

“That’s no fair! I’m a juice dog! I’m a twitchin’ skee-ball! And you won’t let me shiver!

George Lucas should get more credit for "saving Anakin Skywalker" in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Time

I used to be a lot more charitable to TCW, because it was better than the prequels. But “better” =/= “good”, and in hindsight, it’s helluvalot clearer just how much of a hack Filoni is. I’m not all that motivated to ever rewatch the series, but if I do, I’ll probably end up dropping my rating down to a 5/10, placing it right alongside ROTJ and TFA.

What Do YOU Think Star Wars Should Do Next?

I think the old Tales of the Jedi comics did the thing we’re talking about. It felt like older tech and clothing…a.more interesting visual style than Jedi robes and Tie Fighter looking ships from the KOTOR style era.

Indeed. It’s like creators post-1998 got together and said “We don’t have to be creative anymore; we got the prequels now.” SW has been a coprophagic ouroboros ever since.

Haven’t seen it mentioned yet, but that scene where Padme is packing her luggage and talking to Anakin always makes me cringe.

“It’s worse. He’s overly critical. He never listens. He doesn’t understand. It’s not fair!”

“Please don’t look at me like that.”
“Why not?”
“It makes me uncomfortable.”
“Sorry, my lady.”

Lucky for Annie, he found out her knick’s genocide.

What do you think of The Prequel Trilogy? A general discussion.
Time

I don’t get the appeal for Maul. Is it just the aesthetic? I think it’s banal. I like Iain McCaig’s original concept art, where there was an understated seductive quality to his expression and the “horns” were actually feathers tied in place with razor wire, but none of those qualities were carried through in the actual makeup or Ray Park’s performance. He’s just spooky scary demon man with bad teeth. Meh. I’d much rather Dooku had been the main antagonist, and with a whole helluvalot more depth to his character than what we got in AOTC & ROTS.

Were there any mentions of Mandalore and the Mandalorians in the old 80s/90s Expanded Universe?

Didn’t Leia meet a Mando named Fenn Shysa in Marvel?

Yeah. And he and his compatriots all had Irish accents for some reason. They and Boba Fett fought on the side of the Empire during the Clone Wars, which apparently were so close in time to the OT that Leia was around and active during them. None of this ended up meshing well with the EU of the '90s, which is why I don’t really consider them part of the same continuity.

Before The Prequels were made, what the Jedi were supposed to be like?
Time

Granted, it’s like right up to the 1999 line (late '98), but - Redemption. Nomi’s administrative obligations [as a Republic representative] to the conclave rebuilding the Order basically pre-creates Andor’s whole Mon and Leida Mothma bit between her and Vima, (which pushes Vima to seek out Ulic). Nomi, Tott, and Sylvar get into political squabbling about whether Ulic should be tried for his war crimes. They have diplomatic roles on Ryloth and Cathar.

It feels closer to the roles of the prequel Jedi (more than the Dudes Rock™ of the Qel-Droma boys in the preceding titles), even if it’s all predicated on Jedi having children or being widowers.

I definitely got the sense when reading Redemption that KJA intended the aftermath of the Great Sith War the moment in time when the decentralized Jedi Order of the previous TOTJ arcs began transitioning into the centralized Jedi Order of the prequels. I think Nomi even makes a remark about creating a permanent Jedi Council. But true to form, later EU contradicts this, anachronistically making the Jedi Council a thing prior to the Sith War.

I personally don’t mind the Jedi of the prequel era being more centralized, hierarchical, and legalistic than the ancient Jedi. As someone who has a deep interest in early Christianity and its evolution, I enjoy the parallels. I also believe this makes Luke’s restoration of the Jedi all the more poignant, as he’s not merely bringing back the Jedi Order, but restoring it to a purer form absent the ossified traditions which contributed to its downfall. But I do mind the dogmatic Jedi being the rule rather than the exception throughout time, like what we see now in the Disney canon.

Even as late as 1999 and 2000, maybe 2001 there are comics that have a Jedi couple in the prequel era. I don’t know a lot about it but one of them is a tree lady. It started with Attack of the Clones.

That’d be Tholme, Quinlan Vos’ master, and T’ra Saa. They were both created in the interregnum between TPM & AOTC. An interesting period of the EU, as it’s basically a transitional form between the pre-&-post-1999 EU. They went as far as to make Ki-Adi-Mundi polygamous with multiple children.

I know when ROTJ was being made, Lucas intended Luke’s black outfit to be the standard Jedi uniform (at least in style, if not necessarily colour). Also Children of the Jedi implies that Jedi masters specifically wore black cloaks. So this led me to believe prequel-era Jedi were distinguished by rank by their regalia.

Jedi apprentice: simple double-breasted black jumpsuit.
Jedi knight: jumpsuit + tunic w. tabard
Jedi master: jumpsuit + robe w. tabard + cloak (a black version of Luke’s TFA outfit essentially)

What are you reading?
Time

I’ve set out to try again at a comprehensive reading of the Bible. I tried once before, reading straight through cover-to-cover, but tapped out before finishing Exodus. This time I’m using a different approach. I’ve started with the New Testament; instead of going by canonical order, I’m following Marcus Borg’s chronological order. Once I’ve finished the NT, I’ll go back to the Hebrew Bible and read it according to the Jewish canon (Torah, Nev’im, and Ketuvim). Then I’ll finish with the deuterocanonical books, including those canon to the Slavonic and Ethopian Orthodox churches. I’ll mostly be reading from my New Oxford Annotated Bible based on the NRSV, but for books like Jubilees and Enoch, I’ll have to look elsewhere.

Eventually, I plan on tackling the Nag Hammadi library (the so-called Gnostic Gospels) and other Judeo-Christian pseudepigrapha.

Padme: “To be angry is to be human”.

That’s actually peak comedic timing.

What the Prequels' atmosphere and aesthetics would have been like if it was based on the EU and released on the 90s?
Time

I imagine more of a retrofuturist aesthetic overall, with an Art Deco touch, though perhaps Coruscant’s architecture would be more Gothic, in keeping with Ralph McQuarrie’s concept art for ROTJ. Everything would be cleaner and in better condition; not much of the OT’s “used universe” aesthetic would be in play here, except in the seamiest of places. Imperial and Rebel ships would’ve evolved from earlier Republic designs; think first-generation Star Destroyers housing pristine Y-Wings and Z-95 Headhunters. Mon Calamari and Quarren wouldn’t be around, as they didn’t make first contact with the greater galaxy until after the formation of the Empire. Korriban and perhaps a few other planets from the ancient Sith Empire would logically make appearances.
