The Brave Little Toaster (1987) 4K 35mm Film Scan! (WIP)

Highly recommend going with 2 encodes for this one: full frame and theatrical 1.85. It was animated to be seen in the latter ratio.

Highly disagree. I think they should go for a 1.66:1 ratio for this film, as it’s typically how Disney distributed films would be. 1.85:1 was a common matte in America but I feel it would cut out too much info in this particular case. 1.66:1 would be the best to keep a cinematic feel while also keeping in mind the intended matted ratio (which as far as I’m aware, isn’t known; just that it was matted to a widescreen format in film festivals).

Now now, don’t be so hasty there; I didn’t say I was opposed to 1.66. In fact I welcome that because it’s also a valid theatrical ratio. It’d undoubtedly work here. That said, 1.85 or 1.66 would technically be correct!

There has also been a 35mm scan floating around the usual places since last year. Looks good, and is fully intact. Tagged Grindhouse in the name, by someone that obviously doesn’t understand what Grindhoiuse actually is, so ignore that if you come across it.

Some slight adjustment and it is pretty perfect. Well, in comparison to the current awful home releases, anyway.

Could someone point me in the direction of this? In a PM if necessary

I second this!

I can’t find it either. There’s one for Alien though.

Criterion recently announced a blu-ray of this film. Unsure if it’ll be the uncut version, but since it’s Criterion, its safe to assume that it will be.

There’s no “cut” version on home video in America so it’ll always be uncut. Those trimmed theatrical screenings were thankfully not permanent! Unless you’re talking about the soundtrack which in this case is a wait and see.

Im Assume hes Talking About The Soundtrack

I’ve seen some confusion from others regarding a further “uncut” version because of the laserdisc’s runtime. It simply included all extra time and tacked it on. Criterion’s Multiple Maniacs has a soundalike soundtrack and isn’t “uncut” in that regard so I figured he was referring to the Laserdisc runtime.

The Evil Dead (1983) 35MM Film Scan <em>DONATIONS NEEDED</em>
Time

There was a theatrical revival back in 2009. This print is likely from that run which would have been the restoration at that time. Why it doesn’t have a cyan soundtrack I don’t know.

Can anyone kindly PM me a download link? I had donated to this project years back but never got the chance to see it due to a busy work schedule.

Send me a message I’ll dig out the donor encode for you.

I never got to donate for this one, but I’d love to check it out if there’s anything else I can contribute to that I haven’t yet.

It appears so, but only slightly. Here’s a comparison: https://caps-a-holic.com/c_list.php?c=3553

This comparison doesn’t really prove anything about changes. That’s an ancient HDTV master with anemic contrast and a creeping green push. The Iron Giant is a very vibrant movie and the Blu is fantastically close.

I’m not sure if it’s this print or not, but some anonymous fans submitted a 4k scanned 35mm print on a certain Topia of Blue. The print looks and sounds awesome. I don’t know if they’re doing sign-ups or not but just tossing that out there. I cannot help more than that.

when they do the scanning?

It’s been scanned and released already. Hence “it’s on a certain Topia of Blue.”

Info: How many Disney 35mm scans exist?

I’ll be doing more scans soon. We have Covid delays again but I have access to good scanners and to prints.

I’m thinking about setting up a subscription payment system to get things rolling. The goal will be to do every Disney classic - and where possible to scan multiple prints. I might re-scan Pinoke next year as well.

I’d definitely join if you got this rolling.

Help: Looking For... The Stanley Kubrick Collection HDTV Rips
Time

These specific masters have never been shown in HD anywhere as far as I know. It’s up for debate how accurate any of them were in regards to color. The Shining’s DVD does not even have its original theatrical blue ending credits.

Honestly the best way to watch these is either the boxset DVDs themselves or syncing their mono audio to the UHD releases. The Shining and Full Metal Jacket have DVD mono syncs already. 2001’s UHD comes with its original audio intact. Color-wise the UHD releases look fabulous and are probably as close as we’ll get to original intent.

Help: Looking For... Spirited Away on 35mm

Not to scold or anything but it’s good to stick around and make some friends + connections. We’re a community enjoying the hobby, have fun with us! Making thread after thread of homework requests for others isn’t a good look. There are currently no scans for this online. I recommend scoping eBay and locating one if it’s ever for sale and get in contact with the appropriate folks to acquire and scan it. Of course, it helps to stick around and meet people. There’s plenty of things I’d like to see on 35mm and when they happen they happen. When you want to see something bad enough, it can happen provided strings are pulled when possible.

I wish you luck!

A Clockwork Orange (Stanley Kubrick, 1980) – 35mm Scan opportunity (WIP) - Help Wanted

So they botched the bluray of this one?

Pretty much. It wasn’t handled very well and looked meh even back when it came out. The soundtrack is revisionist nonsense as well.

DarthKenobi said:

Botched isn’t the right term. It’s more of a case of the transfer looking dated, similar to the early blu ray transfers of 2001 and The Shining compared to their recent 4K counterparts.

2001 and The Shining’s old masters (even with the wrongly colored tennis ball) are excellent compared to what WB pulled on Clockwork Orange tbh.
