Again, the recording is in pretty bad shape, don't expect much. If anything it's a good reference as far as content goes-- straight from the film projector.

Thanks! It was better than I expected.

I have previously written a guide (based on someone else's poorly constructed guide) on how to down rate an audio track.

Theoretically you could use the method to add/replace audio tracks on a full disc keeping the menus and disc structure intact.
You'd have to get your new audio track to sync before adding it of course, and you'd only have access through the 'audio' key on your remote (unless you replaced an existing track and can remember that say french is your mono). I suppose you could rebuild the menus too... but then you might as well just rebuild the whole disc.

If anyone is interested I'll upload the guide somewhere.

One vote for this guide.

I agree. I'd be intrested in this.

Idea: for... Custom Made DVD Sets

For all three movies, take out the 2004 discs. Replace the 2004 ANH disc with "Star Wars: A Musical Journey." Replace the ROTJ 2004 disc with the Star Wars Bonus Disc from the 2004 release. Take the booklet that came with this and put it behind the ROTJ booklet. On ESB, simply get rid of the disc one holder that swings around, and put the disc in the back.

Wow good idea! Too bad I bought the bundle on starwars.com with the Topps collector card rather than the one with the cool tin.

I'm quite certain this was from a 35mm print with no matrix decoding (which is why there is dialogue in the left and right channels). In the “70mm” file, one can clearly hear a pronounced explosion from the left channel that is absent from the 35mm file as well as the Stuart file. (This was in the original 6-track as well – not an addition to the “93 mix.)

It's quite possible that the Stuart had 70mm capability at the time, but likely did not have a Dolby processor and were unable to secure a 70mm print (legend has it that only 9 were struck for the initial engagement).

So any news on uploading the whole thing? Those links have expired now. Even if it's not the 70mm mix, I'd like it to be uploaded to add to my Star Wars sound mix collection.

Doctor Who: Shada (Released)
Time
Originally posted by: TheFixer
Right, this could be the part where I get into the long complicated discussion about Doctor Who, but I cant be bothered to do that today.
So, let me keep this simple. For the people that don't know:

Shada was an episode of the classic Doctor Who series. It was an episode that starred Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor. Due to a strike at the BBC, production of this episode was halted, and never completed. Footage from this episode was then used in the 20th anniversary special of the show, 'The Five Doctors.' In this episode the 4th Doctor became trapped in time, before being returned to Earth.

Several years later, the episode was released on VHS, along with linking narration from Tom Baker, to explain the bits of missing footage.
You can start to see that this is an odd episode.

Now, several years ago, Shada was remade as a Big Finish audio drama starring Paul McGann as the Doctor. And then this was remade as a BBC animated webcast. The Paul McGann version explained that after the 4th Doctor was returned to Earth in 'The Five Doctors' he went on his next adventure, without doing what he originally intended to do on Earth. The 8th Doctor wants to continue that mission.

Neither of these adventures on considered 'canon.' And also, neither of these adventures have been released on DVD.

I want to preserve this story. I have put the VHS version on DVD, and I am almost finished converting the Webcast version to DVD. I obviously dont want to charge for this!
I would like this to be done on a PIF format. I shall be giving 3 copies out to people, and then I would like them people to give out three copies to someone else, and so on.
This will come over 2 disks. Disk 1 will contain the original Shada, while Disk 2 will contain the animated version. The whole thing shall come with a reversible DVD cover, so you can choose to display it as a 4th Doctor story, or an 8th Doctor story.
If you want to help PIF, please email me at fanfilmfixes@hotmail.co.uk.

I shall have the covers up in a few days.

Thanks,

Dan

So what about preserving the audio drama?

Not as good as the KCCI edition, but worthy of preserving for the fact that the commercials are intact. Basically, the commercials are more important there than the quality of the whole show.

Oh. Since the commercials are on a seperate menu, couldn't someone just make a version with the KCCI version but with the WCBS commercials?

From what I've read, the Dolby Stereo mix was used for the 1985 CAV pan-and-scan laserdisc. I know there's a mono mix (taken from a 1977 bootleg tape) floating around somewhere; not sure about the 6-track. I've heard it was folded down to 2.0 Dolby Surround for 1993 Definitive/1995 Faces LDs. Others have said it was PCM.

From the research I've done, the 35mm stereo mix made it onto the 1985 Laserdisc and it has been captured. Also Moth3r has a recording of the mono mix that's higher quality than the bootleg but it's missing some parts so some guy is working on a restoration of it. As for the 70mm, well there is one version of it that is in stereo but the quality isn't that great. There is also a decent quality version of it but it's in mono.

Bravo to Boon23 for 'thinking outside the box' for ways to distribute CBB's edits.

I don't like it either. It's a real drag to download 1 part of 15 then wait like 3 hours before you can download the next part.

Help Wanted: an MP3 of the 1.0 mono mix from the pre-ANH projects?
Time
Originally posted by: Gregatron
I did some more investigation into the sound mixes on the recently-released Limited Edition DVDs (2004 and GOUT). Here's what I came up with.

The Star Wars (theatrical version) "bonus disc" features the 1993 Definitive Collection sound mix as the basis for the English audio track. The only difference between the DVD and the DC laserdisc is the original opening crawl being slapped onto the beginning of the movie (which also allows the musical "crash" to be properly in sync with the reveal of Tatooine, as it was originally, before the "ANH" subtitle was added in 1981).

The disc's optional Spanish and French language tracks (which were probably dug out of the Lucasfilm Archives for this Limited Edition release), however, are based on the rarely-heard MONO sound mix from 1977!!!!

How do I know?

*Threepio says the famous tractor beam lines (in French/Spanish), lines that do not appear in the Defintive Collection mix.

*Luke (albeit speaking in French/Spanish) says, "Blast it, Wedge, where are you?" (as he does in the mono mix), as opposed to, "Blast it, Biggs, where are you?" as he does in all other versions of the movie.

* The Falcon's chessboard creatures make some different sounds than all other versions of the movie.

* The additional Falcon cockpit sounds (and the whizzing asteroid sounds heard as the ship comes out of hyperspace) that were originally exclusive to the mono mix (and were added back in for the 1997 SE) can be heard on the Spanish and French tracks.

On the 2004 SE DVD, the Spanish audio track is completely new, and uses the 2004 SE mix as its basis.

However, the French audio track is the same one that appears on the "bonus disc" (This version is still based on the original mono mix, with the same French-speaking voice actors as can be heard on the "bonus disc". In this version, French-speaking Luke still says, "Blast it, Wedge, where are you?", while on the new Spanish track, he says, "Blast it, Biggs, where are you?", as in the 2004 SE.), but with the SE material spliced in at the appropriate spots!!!! It seems they even used different voice actors for the added scenes and dialogue (such as Han's voice in the restored Jabba scene)!

But, aside from the SE additions, the original sounds for the Vader/Kenobi duel can still be heard on the French track, as well as the alternate Falcon chessboard creature sounds from the mono mix!

For Empire, the English audio track on the bonus disc is the same as the Definitive Collection sound mix. However, the French and Spanish audio tracks feature a different sound mix than the 1993 Definitive Collection, a mix which appears to be based on the original 70 mm sound mix from the film's initial theatrical release!

This alternate mix features some additional sounds that were not heard on the 35mm and subsequent home video versions, but which were later reincorporated into the 1997 and 2004 mixes. Such sounds include additional R2-D2 beeps when Yoda rummages through Luke's supplies, and additional TIE fighter engine sounds in the establishing shot of Darth Vader's Star Destroyer (after Luke Skywalker beheads the illusory Vader on Dagobah).

On the 2004 Empire DVD, the Spanish audio track is completely new (as with ANh and ROTJ), and uses the 2004 SE mix as its basis.

However, the French audio track is the same one that appears on the "bonus disc" (based on the original 70 mm mix, with the same French-speaking voice actors), but with the SE material spliced in at the appropriate spots. For example, Luke does not say, "Thanks, Threepio." in the Hoth medical center in the French version (but he does in the new Spanish track).

Finally, for the Jedi 2004 SE, the Spanish audio track is completely new (As with ANH and ESB), and uses the 2004 SE mix as its basis. However, the French audio track is the same as the one on the "bonus disc", albeit with new SE material spliced in.

Really? That's horrible. They're basically saying they can give us decent DVD's but just don't want to.
