LEC games: X-Wing, TIE Fighter...
Time

That sounds awesome.  X-Wing is actually what really made me fall in love with Star Wars.  I was 13 when it first came out and I spent so much (way too much!) time playing it.  Probably played through the whole game (plus Imperial Pursuit and B-wing) 10 or 15 times.  I daresay I actually enjoy X-Wing more than the movies themselves...

Tell me more about this X-Wing hack!  Does it run on modern Windows?  Where can I get it?

What's the status of the Originals? (the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy)
Time

This is why I believe the true version of a film SHOULD be the 4th generation theatrical print, because that is the version everybody saw and THAT is the format that everything, from the cinematography to the special effects work, was intended for.

Plus, 4th generation negative although it may have the same resolution as a DVD or similar, looks nothing like a DVD blowup (looks much better, more contrasty, different grain structure).

It is a disservice to old movies to display them from the O-neg where you can see wires on the ships, matte boxes, etc.  It's not just because they were "old" that you see these things- if the o-neg was the final viewing format, those directors back in the day would have found the effects just as off-putting as we do!

I agree.  Here's a thread I started about it:

Hoth and other Battle Analyses
Time

I've always wondered what this conversation between Vader and Veers meant:

Vader: The Rebels are alerted to our presence.  Admiral Ozzel came out of lightspeed too close to the system.

Veers: H-he felt surprise was wiser...

Vader: He's as clumsy as he is stupid.

Are we supposed to take Veers's statement at face value, that Ozzel's plan was to surprise the Rebels?  Or was he just trying to quickly mumble any made-up excuse he could think of to try to save his colleague from Vader's wrath?  Because I don't understand how arriving close to the system would be a surprise.

You'd think the best "surprise" would be to come out of lightspeed with the Star Destroyer's out of the Rebels' sensor range, then launch smaller landing craft (carrying troops, AT-ATs).  Presumably these smaller craft could get much closer to the base than the Star Destroyers could before triggering the Rebels' sensors.  That seems like it would be more of a surprise than what Ozzel did.

And what do you think Veers was about to say?  Ozzel felt surprise was wiser than... what, exactly?

PS78: Pre-ANH Star Wars Bootleg VHS from 1978 ***"RAW" DVD RELEASED***
Time

I agree, I think people were influenced by the Story of Star Wars LPs and stuff like that.  But I *want* to believe!

Someone on this board, I forget who, has memories of seeing the movie in theaters a few times, and there was no scene of Vader flying away at the end.  The story sounded credible to me.

Anyway, it would be cool to see *some* kind of variation between prints, no matter how small of a difference.

Crazy idea- petition White House to get OT released
Time

So, the White House accepts petitions from citizens on pretty much any topic:

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/

When a submitted petition receives 25,000 signatures, the White House will assess it and give their response.  I'm sure many of you have heard about the petition to build a Death Star:

http://cosmiclog.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/13/15889626-its-a-trap-petition-to-build-death-star-will-spark-white-house-response?lite

What if we submitted a petition to get the OT released?

Obviously, the US government would have no actual power or authority to force Disney/Lucasfilm to release the OT... but my thought is, if we could get the 25K signatures, and get the White House to RESPOND to this petition and say, "sorry, no," it at least becomes a news story, and maybe it catches the eye of Disney and whoever else and they start to realize how much people care.  Maybe it would get the ball rolling on a proper release.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

This might not be related to the issues you're having, but maybe it will help.  A while ago I tried to stream Harmy's 2.0 MKV from my laptop to my Panasonic blu ray player, but it wouldn't play.  I read some stuff on AVSForum, and used MKVmerge to "disable header removal compression" in the MKV.

I have no idea what that means or does, but it worked.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Harmy, I may have asked this before, but I can't remember- have you thought about adding the 1985 audio mix to v2.1?  It would be cool to have all 5 audio mixes (1977 5.1, 1977 stereo, 1977 mono, 1985 stereo, 1993 stereo), for the sake of completeness and making comparisons.  They're all unique mixes.

Happy new year, everybody!

Alternate camera angles in ROTJ Kenobi/Luke scene on Dagobah?
Time

Oh yeah, when I got the 1995 THX set it was like seeing completely new movies.  I was finally able to see that Tusken raider Luke saw with his binocs ("there's sandpeople alright, I can see one of them now").  It was also really cool to see things like the scorch marks next to the exhaust port where Red Leader's torpedoes missed.  Little things like that.  $90 is a ton at that age, but I think you got your money's worth and it sent you down a good path. :)

Side note: zombie, I'm a huge fan of your book and your site, and as I was reading your article about interpositives and film preservation (http://savestarwars.com/filmpreservation.html),

I did some thinking and started this thread: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Trying-to-understand-film-preservation-perhaps-a-stupid-question-but-shouldnt-digital-masters-be-struck-from-theatrical-prints/topic/14944/

Not sure if you saw it, but if you have the time, I'd love to hear your thoughts.  The TL;DR basically is: if us fans are trying to preserve what was seen in theaters in 1977, wouldn't we want to scan a theatrical print (as opposed to say an interpositive)?

Alternate camera angles in ROTJ Kenobi/Luke scene on Dagobah?
Time

Hey zombie, I totally get what you're saying, and your response was not rude at all.  I realize that there almost certainly is no alternate cut of this scene, for many reasons- especially because there's so much work involved in altering a negative/tape master, like you said.

The only thing I will say that makes this case slightly different from false memories (situations like people remembering the Biggs scene) is that I actually remember comparing the tapes at home.

The whole thing is unusual for me because the first time I watched the THX widescreen ROTJ, I thought, "huh, those angles are different."  I immediately popped in the P&S TV tape and saw that the angles were in fact different (or at least I thought they were different).  I was a member of the AOL Star Wars forum at the time; there was a guy on there who was compiling a list of alternate and deleted scenes- I remember I emailed him immediately about this, and his response was, "well, that scene was hacked up a lot in editing, it wouldn't surprise me if there were differences" or something.  And I basically left it at that, and never followed through in any other way.

I can assure you, those memories are not false. :)  I know I compared the tapes.  I know for a fact that I thought I saw different angles.  So, looking back, what must have happened is that the P&S cropping looked different enough from the widescreen that I thought there was a difference, when in fact there was not.  I was a stupid teenager with a very short attention span at the time, watching on a 19" CRT, and only compared the tapes once.  I definitely didn't do a careful comparison, and only had one TV, so I of course couldn't compare the taoes side by side.

Well, that was an unnecessarily long reply to make a very small distinction that is moot anyway!  I know I compared the tapes, but now I'm certain my interpretation of said comparison must have been wrong.  The memory is real- but it's a memory of a mistake I made.

When/Why did you become an OT purist?
Time

danny_boy said:

The irony is that the duplication process used in the fotochemical workflow  tended to "even out" the discrepancy between the parts of the o-neg that were 1st generation and the other parts that were optical duplicates.

So by the time you got to that 4th generation release print the film looked relatively seemless.

But if you strike a positive digital "print" from a 4K scan the difference in granularity between all the constituent parts that make up Star wars will be jarring.

I know very little about all this, but in a way I've come to the same conclusion, which I think is sort of the same point you're making here:  filmmakers account for generational loss, and it is in fact part of the intended look of the theatrical print.  (And therefore, wouldn't a scan of a theatrical print be the definitive way to watch SW, or really, any movie?)

Not sure if you saw it, but have you seen the thread where I asked about this:

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

The lost frame of ESB
Time

zombie, msycamore, thanks so much for the info re: the shot of the fleet.  Anyone know a reason why this was done, and when the FX shot was created?  Was it a shot they simply forgot to put in, or one they felt they needed for some reason after the movie was released?

I seem to remember reading/hearing in some Lucas or Kershner interview, about a shot at the end of ESB that apparently came out crappy, I believe of the fleet, and I think Kersh said, "one bad shot can ruin the whole movie" or something like that, so they decided to redo it.  I wonder if this is related to the missing/added FX shot?

The lost frame of ESB
Time

I'm surprised I've never noticed this missing frame, but all the jump cuts in SW have really stood out to me, since the early 90s: the explosion on the blockade runner after 3PO and R2 dodge the crossfire, a couple times when R2 moves, turning lightsabers on/off, opening/closing doors on the Death Star, etc.

Unbelievable that I never noticed the looped shot of the Tusken raider after so many viewings.  Now I can't unsee it!

The lost frame of ESB
Time

Very interesting.  I learn something new every day on this site.

I don't mean to derail this thread, but I have a quick question and didn't think starting a new thread was worth it.  Is it true that different theatrical releases of ESB had slightly different endings?  Something about a missing FX shot of the rebel fleet or something?  Is there a thread or pics of this somewhere on OT.com?  Couldn't find anything.
