Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years

I was never a fan of his art, really. It just didn't have the same feel as McQuarrie's, obviously.

Yeah, I'm not much of a Chiang fan either.  The Naboo fighters and transport were kinda cool, but there's not much else to me that's memorable from the prequels (though that could also be because I think they're terrible movies anyway).  Though I do absolutely love the transport they fly in on at the very beginning of TPM.  (I later found out it was based on rejected Millennium Falcon concept art, so I'm guessing it was designed by McQuarrie).  McQuarrie was just on a whole different level.

I think Doug Chiang, the concept artist for Episodes I and II, had a huge impact on the design aesthetic of those movies (and the fact that they don't have a very OT look). In Episode III, you see a lot more designs that are reminiscent of the OT.

Out of curiosity, who was the concept artist for III?

There's a Lucasfilm webisode about the design of episode I.  Doug Chiang says something like, "there was a lot I liked about the design of [the original] Star Wars, but there were a lot of things I DIDN'T like.  So at home I'd draw MY version of what an X-Wing fighter should look like..."

So this is who they picked to design new Star Wars movies?  SMH.

Info: 1983 UK 'TVS' Star Wars premiere - anybody still have a recording?
Time

Yeah, lots of interesting stuff gets thrown out.  Not to get too off-topic, but I threw out an old tape of ROTJ that was recorded off US network TV in the late 80s/early 90s, and I SWEAR it was a slightly different cut of the movie.  The Luke/ghost Obi-Wan scene on Dagobah was comprised of different camera angles from any other version I've ever seen.  I started a thread on it a while ago but no one has any memory of this.  I wish I had that !@#$%^ tape!!!

George Lucas rants at his fans - Hilarious Cartoon!
Time

I would LOVE to see Wes Anderson direct a SW movie, though this would never happen.  I've fantasized about this.  I'm not kidding- it could be amazing.  My two favorite movies are probably Star Wars and Rushmore.  He can certainly write characters and his attention to detail is insane.  It would look nice and vintage-y.  Assuming he was a SW fan (can't really picture him being one), he would bring an incredible level of passion and care.  There would be practical effects, models, real sets, and stop-motion (see Fantastic Mr Fox).  He'd probably have to dial down the dry humor, but it could seriously be great.

Though I guess he'd have to replace Aurebesh with Futura...

ps. Awesome cartoon, great job!

Even if the new movies are objectively better than the OT, they will still lack that late 70s/early 80s aesthetic that so many of us love. :-(

It's a shame.  If I were in charge of the new Star Wars movies, one of my objectives would be to make them look like the old movies.  Make them look like they came from that era.  Like, literally, do everything possible to get the same "vibe" from IV.  The graininess, the colors, models and real sets, pacing.  Future generations would think VII-IX were made right after IV-VI.

I'm not sure if it's nostalgia (I didn't see SW til the late 80s), or that the late-70s look and "feel" just perfectly suits the movies.

Yes.  This is something in the Star Wars universe I've sorely missed since X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and Dark Forces:

REBELLION VS. EMPIRE.

This is the backdrop of Star Wars... yet I feel it hasn't been seen/addressed in 20 years.  Or if it has, it was done terribly (Force Unleashed).  I want to see the formation of the Rebellion.  I want to see this small rag-tag group slowly grow in strength in the years prior to IV.  I want to see what they were doing between IV and V.  Man, the force and Jedi are cool and all, but I really want to see more of the military conflict.

Playing those LucasArts game and pretending I was a pilot/trooper in a massive galactic civil war is what got me back into Star Wars as a teenager in the early 90s.

It's funny looking back at ROTJ- in hindsight, it really foreshadowed what the prequels would be like.  Stupid, confusing plots, characters with nonsensical motivations, recycled imagery and plot devices, crap that appeals to babies.

Given ROTJ, should we really have expected anything good from episodes I-III?  It's essentially a prequel without any CGI.

Same... weird news.  Is it good or bad?  I don't know.

I do fear that Disney may be more litigious than Lucasfilm when it comes to fan edits etc.

I hoped no more Star Wars movies would ever be made.

Not sure what to think about episode VII.  I strongly believe that it would be IMPOSSIBLE for it to be worse than the prequels.

What does it mean for the OOT?

I have no idea how I'm supposed to feel about this.

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)

Hey guys, I know nothing about the technical side of these preservation efforts, but I love following threads like this because of the devotion that is clearly evident amongst all of you.

One question I have- why is there such awful smearing in this speeder shot?  I mean, it looks like it's so much worse than other shots in the GOUT.  Why is this shot in particular so bad?

I think the RLM prequel reviews are spot-on.  His voice doesn't annoy me but I can see how it might annoy others.

The review for KOTC is pretty good too.  It really articulates all the feelings I had of "why can't I connect to this movie?  Why is it terrible?"  (Unfortunately, there's a joke about 4.5 minutes in that makes me not want to show it to a lot of people!)

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Harmy, these comparisons are awesome!  Not sure if this has been pointed out yet, but I'm wondering if you accidentally swapped v1.0 and v2.1 images in one of the snapshots.

In 13.25.36, I'm able to read "YAVIN" much more clearly in the v1.0 shot than in the v2.1 shot.  I'm assuming this should be the other way around?

(What's really cool about this is that I never even knew it said "YAVIN" in the first place!)

Thanks for all you do, Harmy.

But...that's what these films are about. :p

Heh heh, I know, I was just being hypercritical (and trying to be funny).

I mean, the briefing isn't awful... but there are a lot of things I don't like about it.  And of course, these are supposed to be fun movies, but it just doesn't seem like the rebels are taking this battle very seriously when it seems like anyone can just be a general, Luke barges in to say hello, etc.  I know they're supposed to be rag-tag, but they just don't seem like a professional military.

It's kinda goofy and minimizes the sense of impending danger (for me anyway).

The ROTJ briefing is awful in so many ways.

Hey, who wants to be a general?  We'll take anyone!  We don't really have any qualified pilots to lead this Death Star assault- certainly not anyone who's loyal, has experience in many battles, and has gone up against a Death Star before (ahem WEDGE ANTILLES cough).  So how about the sketchy guy who ran a gas mine and hasn't done any meaningful piloting in years?  Good choice.  Oh by the way, he made a deal with Darth Vader to capture PRINCESS LEIA and her friends so that Vader could freeze LUKE F'N SKYWALKER in carbonite and give him to the Emperor.  But he was in that Tanaab battle or something?  Sure, what the hell.

Next!

Ok, now, we're about to launch the most important ground assault in Rebel Alliance history- the fate of the galaxy hinges on it.  Let's see... we have a guy who's known as a great PILOT and smuggler... though to his credit I guess he's broken in an out of some strongholds before.  Sure, why not.  Oh also, he's been frozen in carbonite for like 2 years, so his eyesight might be a little screwed up and I'm guessing his muscles have atrophied and maybe he's gone a little crazy.  Oh yeah, he hasn't led any sort of ground operation since he's been frozen for 2 years, and this'll be his first mission as a general, so he might need some catching up on the latest Imperial procedures and methods, and his aim might be a little off.  You can probably get him up to speed on all that on the flight to Endor.  But yeah, good choice, doesn't look like we have anyone else.

He seems prepared too- he doesn't have a crew for the shuttle, but I'm sure some of his buddies will just volunteer DURING THE BRIEFING.  Last minute, who cares?  No big deal.  Make sure to take the useless, shiny, talkative protocol droid with you too on this important subterfuge operation that's going to require stealth.

Hey Luke- no, no problem!  Juts barge right into the middle of the most important mission briefing in rebel history!  You forgot your ID?  No biggie, I'm sure the guy just waved you in.  We're all friends here in the Alliance.  Oh, you don't want to fly an X-Wing?  We were kind of counting on you since you blew up the first Death Star, and you might be the best pilot in the galaxy.  But yeah, no worries, just be a crew member on the shuttle.  That's the best use of your skills.

So, you guys ready?  Alright, let's blow up this Death Star!!!  But don't forget to have some fun out there!!!

If anyone else wants to be a general, let us know!

Sigh.

Idea: Crazy, but... has anyone edited the films so that Vader IS NOT Luke's father?
Time

I find myself mostly just watching SW these days, and I think I find it more enjoyable when I view it as it was in 1977- that is, Vader is not Luke’s father, Luke and Leia are not related, etc.  To me, the universe is so much bigger and less confined that way.

This would of course require major editing in the other films, but I’m just curious if anyone has ever considered it?
