So I noticed in your clips, Leia’s lightsaber is back to blue? Is that true in the final version?

Either, very excited for this. Rey Nobody is essential, and I think you found a great way of not having Leia be in it.

Absolutely love the Death Star Duel change.

Hey! Yeah, I did switch it back to blue. The main reason was that I’m not using the Force Ghosts bit at the end, but also I actually like the visual of Rey and Ben standing together with blue sabers. I theorize that’s why they did it in the first place. I know it’s what she wanted, but the purple saber never really looked right for me.

I appreciate all the wonderful ideas in this thread, and folks helping each other out. (Especially those who’ve helped me with ideas in the past.)

One idea I’m exploring at the moment is altering Anakin’s motivation around joining Sidious on the darkside from saving Padme, to saving Padme, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka. Some of the ways I’m doing that will stay secret at the moment.

But I wanted to ask if anyone knows where I might source audio (or suggestions for audio manipulation) to change some Anakin and Sidious dialogue, namely
Sidous saying ā€œā€¦save your wife from certain deathā€ I’d like to change it to ā€œā€¦save your family from certain deathā€ if possible.
&
Anakin saying ā€œJust help me save Padme’s lifeā€ to ā€œJust help me save their livesā€

And any suggestions for changing the Vader/Sidious exchange at the very end would be accepted as well.

I’d say you could probably find everything you need in the films themselves. Palpatine says ā€œfamilyā€ a couple of times in Rise of Skywalker. Might be able to use that if you clean it up. I’m sure Anakin says ā€œtheirā€ and ā€œlivesā€ a few times between the two films.

THEY FLY NOW

Has 3PO never seen a trooper fly before?

I mean, I didn’t scrub through every episode of Clone Wars, but I don’t think he did in the movies. I don’t think there were any jetpack troopers in the area on Geonosis, and there weren’t any in the OT.

Here is the speeder chase scene in its entirety. I wanted to keep the ā€œThey fly now!ā€ line from 3PO, and remove references to ā€œNever underestimate a droidā€ as that scene no longer appears. It wasn’t quite as simple as just cutting those bits out though, as the whole flow of the scene was changed.

I had to flip flop a shot of Poe’s speeder and Rey’s speeder right after 3PO’s line. I also had to change the shot of Rey when we cut back to her as it was originally a wider shot. It was unclear which speeder we were looking at because the shot goes by so fast. So now that shot is a close up of Rey. I also threw in a light Sith Whisper when Rey sees the ship to give her a reason to stare at it.

Then, the usual tremendous amount of audio rework to get the scenes to flow into each other.

  1. Qui-Gon. The juxtaposition of the way he is (compassionate, caring, unafraid to take risks) vs. the way the Jedi council is (scared, traditionalist, forbidding connection) is important to see. It sets up that the way the Jedi Order functions doesn’t work and should change. Obi-Wan being pulled between the Order and the way Qui-Gon operated is what leads to his middle-ground approach to training Anakin, which leaves him vulnerable to Palpatine.

  2. The Republic. We need to see it the way we see it in TPM. It’s huge, thriving, bright, happy. We need to see it that way to realize how corrupted it becomes, and see the tragedy of its downfall into becoming the Empire.

Here’s a cool example of a small change making a big impact. Out of curiosity, I reversed the shot of R2 standing over Leia during her death scene, which makes the end of the shot the reveal of her limp hand. Small change, huge difference, and something I only thought of after staring at it for a month wondering why it wasn’t quite working.

I’m hoping the fact that it’s raining upwards in the background isn’t too noticeable, because I absolutely love this change.

Anyways, for a final cut, I wonder if there’s a more subtle audio track you could use for Kylo’s moment on the Death Star. The Force Theme in your clip feels a bit… whimsical? Something a little more thematically specific to the scene might be ideal; maybe there’s something quieter from Rey & Kylo’s scenes together in TLJ, or an appropriate moment from ā€œBen’s themeā€ (the different-key Kylo’s Theme) if one exists. The little bit that plays during his death (around one minute into the track ā€œFarewellā€) comes to mind, especially since an angrier version of Kylo’s theme plays earlier in the Death Star scene. It’d be reusing music from the same movie, but it could be acceptable since the Death Star scene is, in a way, ā€œKylo Ren’s death scene.ā€

I did try a few options and I couldn’t get anything else to work quite right. If I could find a less triumphant version of the Ben Solo theme I might give it ago. I think I tried Farewell, but maybe I’ll have another look at it.

Time for some clips!

Rey V Palpatine (lots of credit to bbghost on this one)

The End
https://vimeo.com/696759536

This is some cool stuff! I’m surprised how convincingly this version of the Force Bond Duel sells, purely on Rey’s inner anger.

And making Kylo’s hesitance on the Death Star based on his connection with Rey, rather than Leia’s interference, makes the scene so much more personal. There’s a great sense of continuity there with the previous movie, and Rey being scared by her own actions is more believable without the distraction of Leia; Rey is confronted with the terrible realization that, in that moment at least, she has less self-control and more hatred than Kylo himself, and there’s no excuse for it.

As for Rey vs Palpatine, I find it interesting in how the theatrical version’s weakness has only become more pronounced after these fan edits. Jonh/HAL 9000’s of course was immediately well-received for being more fan-servicing, loosely addressing the unspoken issue of Palpatine’s immortality, and aiming to better satisfy as the ending of a 9-movie saga. But even going in the complete opposite direction, yours ends up more character-driven, personal, and in continuity with the trilogy’s greater arc of Rey’s self-validation (and reminds me just a bit of Duel of the Fates’s equivalent scene). With both extremes proving more effective, the original theatrical’s middle-ground option of ā€œvoices but not ghostsā€ just looks… weak, even though I didn’t dislike it on my initial viewing.

Thank you for the feedback!

I truly believe this movie was maybe 2 more drafts away from being very good. The worst thing that happened to it was trying to hit the December release date. If they had given them 6 months longer to get it right, we’d be having very different conversations about it. There’s a ton of good ideas in it, but none of them really quite land.

I think that’s why the fanedits are so interesting. We are doing all of that noodling around that the creative team didn’t have time to do.

I love the idea of having the 20th Century Fox fanfare not just as a cute fanservice thing but also it kind of helps with this feeling like the end of this nine-part epic in a way by getting a reminder of where Star Wars came from. Question is though if you’re including the fanfare? Are you including the logo and if so? Will it be the 20th Century Fox or 20th Century Studios variant? Minor detail I know but it has sparked my curiosity.

It is the fanfare and logo from 4K83, no changes. I too like the idea of it being a throwback to the originals.

That’s really interesting. I imagine AOTC to feel really short, because I feel like it has very little ā€œmeatā€.

Little meat, but it’s got more actually going on than the other prequels. Not necessarily substantial things, just things.

Also, there’s some mystery to it, which holds your attention better as a viewer.

I’m sure this will be controversial but I promise I have a point, but that to me is why Last Skywalker feels shorter than Rise of Skywalker and TFA even though it’s significantly longer.

It’s because TFA and TROS are really busy. There’s almost always something happening and they never stay still for long. If you’re just looking at ā€œkeeping things movingā€ then their pacing is perfect.

Except, I don’t think that’s what pacing is. Like EddieDean said, it’s the emotions, it’s keeping people engaged. I have to care about what is happening to the characters from scene to scene. A quiet scene where two characters slowly touch their fingers together can be as riveting as an enormous battle.

Personally, I think Phantom Menace is actually better at this than Attack of the Clones, but it’s also why Rise of Skywalker feels so significantly better than those two films. It isn’t, from a craft perspective, but I actually am invested in and care about what is going on.

So trimming the crappy stuff out of TPM and getting it down to 90 minutes might make it busier and move faster, but that’s not necessarily better than being 10 minutes too long.

90 percent of your ideas correspond to my imagination (and the other 10 are better than mine)

Next time I render I’ll send it to you, we can compare and contrast!

Don’t let your edit rest, we need as many different, interesting versions of this movie as possible.
