I think it would be hard to remove the “going back to Jakku” stuff from TFA.
I think it would be hard to remove the “going back to Jakku” stuff from TFA.
Should the First Order be more like modern Nazis or more like if the Nazis that escaped to Argentina made a Fourth Reich?
👏Replace👏Palpatine👏with👏Dooku👏you👏cowards!👏
Every soldier in the Final Order is headless
It’s mentioned 3 times, “I will earn your brothers saber” and “Leia’s saber”, “she surrendered her saber to me” on Achto.
All could easily be replaced/removed.
Also “There’s something my sister would want you to have.”
There are a bunch of shots, though, that show the lightsaber close to the screen that would be hard to work around or replace, which makes me worried this might not work. But anything’s doable.
Outstanding work, just wow. Beautiful!

At the end of TRoS, have the whole Skywalker family appear to Rey.
I guess I never put two and two together that they could be the same building from different angles, but I guess it makes sense. Honestly I thought it was just a completely redone skyline since they look so different.
Why can’t she just have innate Force powers? Her usage of the Force never felt like a mystery to be solved to me. It’s just protagonist business.
Something something Mary Sue.
To be fair, she picked it up much more quickly than anyone else in the galaxy, including the literal Chosen One.
I mean, in the Original Trilogy, training in the Force is made out to be like putting yourself in the right state of mind. Every single moment on training Luke goes through in the Original Trilogy is a mental exercise, and not the workout regimen the prequels make it out to be or a lot of fans expect it to be based on other fantasy stories, especially ones with hard magic systems.
In that sense, Rey picking it up faster makes a ton of sense. It takes Luke almost a while movie before he even believes the Force is a thing that exists, takes him until the end of ANH before he’s willing to give it the time of day and even toward the beginning of ESB, he’s still not as reliant and trusting in the Force as a Jedi should be. Versus Rey, whose whole thing in TFA was that she starts out already generally believing in all of that, and it just takes her being involved in the legends she already believed in for her to reach the threshhold it took Luke a whole movie to pass.
After that, I’d frankly argue her growth is slower than Luke’s. In ESB, his conflict in training as a Jedi was to learn about what a good Jedi should be, but Rey’s in TLJ is about unlearning the bad and wrong ideas about how the Force works. Which is fitting honestly, after the prequels gave a bunch of people bad and wrong ideas about how the Force works.
As for picking it up quicker than the literal Chosen One… I mean the prequels don’t really show Anakin being powerful at all, all there really is is the Phantom Menace going on and on about how his force meter power level is so high. He doesn’t really do anything impressive, and he’s not shown to be any more in tune with the Force or the universe than any other Jedi, in fact he seems less so. Which is weird since apparently he’s supposed to be born of the Force?
I could go on and on and on about this but this isn’t the trashing the prequels thread.
tl;dr: Rey is great (in TFA and TLJ) and not a Mary Sue (in TFA and TLJ) and Rey Nobody is awesome and Rey Palpatine sucks
Dang, recognizing some of these from posts years back. Every once in a while I’m like, oh yeah that was Snooker who did that! You’re very prolific.
Yub Nub!
Nah, I prefer Victory Celebration instead.
I’d say this edit is a perfect place to try out using Victory Celebration without cutting away to the SE planet celebrations, since that ending is now redundant with TROS and you could then reuse some of them, like Coruscant, for TROS Ascendant.
I was about to say that! I’ve been longing for a version without the planets sequence even before TRoS. I was playing around with it, though, and there’s a good 10 seconds of no-footage to fill, though, at least the way I did the audio. I couldn’t find a better way to do the music, though. Not sure how to fill it up, although reversing the footage around it and replaying to fill time kinda helps. Got it down to 4 seconds, but I can’t really get any further.
It might make it a little easier if we had isolated sound effects and foley, because then we could have more freedom. A lot of footage is cut down in the Victory Celebration ending that could be lengthened back up, but then the sound effects wouldn’t be synchronized.
Here’s something, no sound effects or foley, just music taken from the soundtrack. Not something I’d recommend using in a fanedit, but it’s something.
I don’t think anyone could tell the difference unless it was specifically pointed out to them, but looking at the specific points where it’s changed, I think the skyline in the '97 version is more charming. Same goes with the skyline in the Phantom Menace, which was changed in some shots in '01. The older skyline feels less sci-fi and more charming. It feels more like just a city on a planet.
Although, oof, looking at Trillary Dump’s restoration and the Blu Ray side by side, you can tell the sequence came from an SD source.
What I did was use Trillary Dump’s restoration for the entire sequence, starting from one cut and ending at the next complete cut. Any smooth transition shots, like a building sweeeping or a wipe, I kept using the same source. The rest of the ending scene I used Harmy, except for added shots where I used the Blu Ray.
IMO Harmy and 4k83 are pretty equivalent, but I chose to use Harmy because I feel like it jives better with the PAL DVD and the Blu Ray. When that '97 film scan comes out, then I’d use that and 4k83, but for now I think Harmy is better.
I’m rendering it right now. I intended to last night when I made that comment, but because of some confusion I didn’t end up doing it. It should be complete in a few hours. This will be a render of the full movie. I’m gonna PM a link to Alderaan94 and Call Me Ocean Master, but if anyone else wants a link they can PM me too.
I planned on just using the original credits just because so little of the movie is actually changed in an edit like this, but there are some changes and the credits so list people who worked on the Special Editions, so maybe that’s the way to go? Also, should Harmy’s credits be included? The version I’m rendering just has the theatrical credits, not Harmy’s and not the Special Edition.
Edit: I also want to say that I used the theatrical credits music, but it was very, very slightly early. I added in an extra frame of the last shot that’s in the theatrical version but was trimmed out in '97, which made the audio sync correctly, but obviously not it’s not accurate to the '97 ending. I also made the credits 2 decibels quieter because it sounded louder than the rest of the scene. Not that anyone will care, but it’s a detail I wanted to share.
Also, I feel like redoing this with the Blu Ray footage replaced with Schormann’s HDTV restoration, just because I think it looks way better than the Blu Ray. Or maybe if I can get my hands on a Disney+ Rip or one of the Blu Rays coming out in a few days, I should use that? Since they look even better.
I don’t think this will be any final version, so I’m gonna download Schormann’s preservation off the spleen.
I’m not a big color correction boy, so I don’t know the details of it, but it’s basically a file with the details of the color correction. So other people can use the color corrected video without having to download a huge video file.
Beautiful color correction. Do you plan on releasing a LUT for the unedited movie?
It’s a bad title, but I get why they changed it. Wish they changed it to something better, though.
Bruh I was telling you in PM I already made this years ago I just need to rerender it : (
As for why Trillary Dump’s restoration looks blurry there, it’s because the footage is taken from an upscaled 576i PAL DVD, which is the highest quality version of the scene in that form, at least until that film scan comes out. Unless you’re willing to have Naboo in the planets sequence (which is inaccurate to the '97 ending, plus it has Gungans in it, one of which says “Meesa free!”), this is the best we have right now.
Replacing the Endor shot with Harmy Despecialized would take care of that particular part, but the whole sequence is DVD quality, and you can’t replace the whole thing with Harmy or the Blu Ray.
I mean you could always make Rey’s saber purple. Part of me likes the idea that it’s the midway point between blue and red, but also thematically there isn’t really anything in the movie to set that up. Also the fact that Mace has a purple saber obscures that idea.
Rey’s lightsaber should have been green.
I made something like that a few years back, although it still had Naboo because I wasn’t really sure how to recreate the original 1997 planets sequence, and the only footage I knew of existed in laserdisc rips, not HD or even DVD-quality. Trillary Dump has since made a '97 restoration with an accurate planets sequence in HD, but this edit predates it.
It’s in 720p, not 1080p, but I’ll PM you in case this all isn’t a dealbreaker. It scratched my itch and the itches of a few other people, it might scratch yours.
I don’t really see any issue with moving the planets montage to TRoS unless you insist on watching the Special Editions.
Edit them to be absolutely jam-packed with stimulation, pop ups every few seconds, incredibly loud and distracting music, text pointing out details, jokes and memes thrown in there for good measure, and cut from scene to scene before they finish.
Some of the detail in the background seems to be lost. Especially what looks like smoke.
I’m probably going to work on two or more versions, a more radical 3-in-1 movie version, and a less radical 6-part-series version, and then finish and release whichever one I think worked better. Maybe incorporate some of Neverar’s ideas in the 3-in-1 movie version, or maybe try out a third version. Point is, I’m gonna be shotgun trying a few different ideas to experiment and see what works.
Sorry for taking so long to reply, I am a creature of gloop.
It would also make it a cool setup-payoff, and make it feel like the First Order is tasting some of their own medicine.
