Error: No valid form action received -- when previewing an "edit"
Time

Great! I just tested it in my post above and the “preview” now works.

BTW, while not actually editing that post, I just noticed that the edit page (and it’s probably the same on all other “entry” pages) had no “cancel” button.
I wonder if an elegant solution to backing out of an entry/edit, without changes, is to include a cancel button to return to the calling page?
And how would that handle the entry/edit page opened in a new tab?

Time

Awesome (v2) trailer!

Some may not know the significance of The Hidden Fortress to Star Wars. Perhaps in the next trailer, this description card can be updated to something like:

The Forerunn er Of George Lucas!
The Inspirati on For Star Wars!
Kuros awa’s
The Hidde n Fortress
Now With Star Warsian Dialogue!
And The Musi c Of John Williams!

Just for the record (pun intended), here’s an extra, in case a project of this ever get off the ground … a recording of the David Rose & His Orchestra-commissioned Forbidden Planet theme song, pre- Louis & Bebe Barron’s “electronic tonalities” soundtrack (hint: it’s not the music of the FP trailer)! Downward Compatibility @ 98% (yes!)
Time

Website looks AWESOME in this latest update! Even older browser versions show properly without “developer view-mode”. Congrats!

Firefox looks great from v.37.0.1 (not all that old).

Opera looks good from v.12.17 (fairly old).
It’s incompatibilities are few and mostly cosmetic:

  • the drop-down bar is not active (when scrolling) but does show at webpage top
  • the right-side circles have extra text (not showing in Firefox) and it upsets the formatting

“The Making Of Star Wars For Radio” (1981) With MISSING Star Wars Scenes
Time

It was in March of 1981 that National Public Radio (NPR) aired “The Making Of Star Wars For Radio”, a behind-the-scenes listen of the complete Star Wars story, of which it’s film counter-part was trimmed down by the Lucas’ (George and Marcia) for release to movie theaters a long time ago.

Now, Destinies: The Voice Of Science Fiction brings us again to that radio program from it’s own 2015 broadcast. Click the Destinies CaptPhilOnline program archive snapshot to listen:

"DESTINIES - THE VOICE OF SCIENCE FICTION airs on Fridays at 11:30 PM EST on WUSB, 90.1 FM, the radio station of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, NY, USA. Hundreds of writers, artists, editors, actors, producers, directors, and musicians have appeared on the program since its debut in April, 1983."

Thanks. And thanks to us all for the co-operative efforts! (And a great thread.)

Without knowing how the Disney animators colored this movie, and whether it was compensated to what cinema projection was supposed to be, and if the screen-grabs (analogue sources) were neutrally captured … I think the 1990 laserdisc appears as one would expect of a Disney animation. Has poita ever chimed in on this particular movie, from quality print(s) and/or Disney research? Or from similarly dated ones that he knows for sure?

So, depending on when that 16mm was printed (I expect predating even 1981 home video releases) and on what stock, it should’ve had the fullest color.

I came across an assortment of original 1956 Fobbiden Planet “cards” (different from the colorized-B&W “lobby cards” – why would they do colorization when they already have them … in color!?) at the Four Color Comics website (with a search).

To compensate for the printing, I reduced the brightness (gamma) and increased the color (technicolor-simulation) as a one-shot-applied-to-all. Of course, one cannot expect printed media to be a proper color guide, but I think the overall look is better than the later, commercial releases of weak colors with tints all over the map:

As a substitute, this Home Theater Forum 7-page thread comparison, sans-Blu(2013), may help:

Firstly the 2006 DVD/HDDVD/BD … the faded negative … early Eastmancolor.

Whoa! That explains much about the weak restoration.

According to a HTF post …

Link please (if you have it handy)?

… the 5.1 remix … only the LCR masters survive … the surround channel had deteriorated and was thus unuseable. … was to have premiered in full 4 track Cinemascope mag (LCRS) and Perspecta directed mono.

I guess that $1,000+ 16mm eBay wouldn’t have helped for a preservation project, unless it’s (stereo?) optical soundtrack is a LCRS mix-down.

LDs use the same source. The Criterion … The MGM CLV
… the Criterion is clearly mono-ed … the MGM is stereo despite feeling very boxed in. … directional dialogue panning in both …

Would it mean that any stereo is L+C+S and R+C+S?

The CAV MGM … was ported to DVD as shown in the DVdbeaver caps. Those look pretty much like the CLV image …

The Laser Disc Database lists Forbidden Planet laserdisc (US) releases from 1983 to 1994:

1983 Forbidden Planet (1956) ML100041 P&S CLV 2-channel
.
1989 Forbidden Planet (1956) Sp.Ed. #53 CC1153L LB CAV 2-channel
.
1991 Forbidden Planet (1956) ML102321 LB CLV 2-channel
.
1994 Forbidden Planet (1956) ML104683 LB CAV 2-channel

Therefore, would the earliest, pan & scan laserdisc (same pedigree as the earliest Betamax, VHS, VHD, CED?) have the most color, as a guide for any letterbox (even BR) restoration?

This new section was just some broken-film splicing of the 35mm (however, there was a brightness fluctuation with a darker fade-out of the 16mm shot, of THX & LUH embracing; no frames were lost, as the following THX morning-shower shot remained in sync):

sync 35mm to 16mm - as 2 parallel streams matching where they can
4th 1000+ frames
[note: each 1000-frame section begins exactly on shot; section ending isn’t trimmed]

FrankT now has the files and is undertaking restoration.

Cool! I hope FrankT will do running commentary on his procedure of what the particular processes do and how well they do it. With lots and lots example pictures and before/after comparisons! 😃

. . . and I wonder how the scan/restoration looks/will-look compared to this cell displayed the Star Phoenix Art Gallery: Disney (1940) Fantasia - Original Vintage Production Art of Otika¹ and an un-named centaurette:

¹ There are 3 differently drawn, dark centarettes; in order of appearance they are "Otika", Sunflower, Atika; only Sunflower and Atika are identified by name in the Disney script; "Otika" may be a mis-spelling of Atika (courtesy Disney-Wiki) with "Otika" un-named in the actual production. This next section with the multiple cuts wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be (a pain, but not bad):

sync 35mm to 16mm - as 2 parallel streams matching where they can
3rd 1000 frames
[note: each 1000-frame section begins exactly on shot; section ending isn’t trimmed]

35 frames . . description
19192-28172 . . begin match @ room-talk
. 00000-00151 . spacer for spliced-out sign_reader
. 00000-00001 . blink for undetermined spliced-out frame(s)

. 00000-00009 . spacer for spliced-out robo_malfunction
28225-30000 . . matched @ robo_malfunction

16mm frames . . description
19940-28922 . . begin match @ room-talk

. 00000-00001 . blink for undetermined spliced-out frame(s)
29073-30000 . . matched @ robo_malfunction

Here’s is what threw the timeline into question (and how to deal with it) – both 35mm and 16mm were missing/spliced between the same shots:

The 'Star Wars Holiday Special' - 2015 EditDroid version. (Released)

Here is yet another release of the Star Wars Holiday Special. But we at EditDroid feel this one is indeed special, due to its excellent video quality.

Never saw the special and don’t know it’s release genealogy but, wow, this looks pretty good from a TV taping! I thought to test a few adjustments but it’s hard for me to judge the result. (This old laptop’s LCD screen changes the look just by moving one’s head). 😃 I was trying for a less TV-ish look in this before-and-after:
