Star Wars Episode I: Cloak Of Deception (Released)
Time

Once Qui-Gon says, “I must speak to the Jedi Council immediately. The situation has become much more complicated,” cut to the Jedi Temple establishing shot. It is unnecessary for Palpatine to blatantly manipulate Padmé to propose a vote of no confidence; he subtly manipulates Padmé in the Senate scene later. Arguably, Palpatine’s reliance on blatant manipulation weakens his character, which would be stronger if he could manipulate Padmé into proposing the vote without directly suggesting it.

Hmmm. I hadn’t thought about this before. Are you suggesting cutting the entire scene? You would loose some info like setting up the republic (“is not what it once was”) and the senate (“full of greedy squabbling delegates”) that I think is necessary.

Cut “Without the Viceroy, they will be lost and confused” because it would be more accurate to say “Without the droid control ship, they will be lost and confused.”

Padmé should still mention the droid control ship in her plan because the whole military strategy revolves around it. I would recommend recutting the scene like so:

PADMÉ: We can enter the city using the secret passage on the waterfall side. Then we can enter the palace and capture the Viceroy.
QUI-GON: The Viceroy will be well-guarded.
PADMÉ: We have a plan which should immobilize the droid army. We will send what pilots we have to knock out the droid control ship orbiting the planet.”

This clarifies that capturing the Viceroy is the goal, but destroying the droid control ship is the requirement necessary to achieve that goal.

Hmm…what if the lines could be tweaked further to something like:

PADME: We will send what pilots we have to knock out the droid control ship…which should immobilize the droid army.

Her line “We have a plan” is so awkward and dull sounding…plus this makes it more condensed and to-the-point.

Info Wanted: AOTC score questions

OK, I was actually trying to find which TV Guide I would’ve seen back then and came across these 4 different covers for TPM. I don’t remember seeing this artwork before…pretty cool.

Damn! Then they did 4 more a month later!

Then for AOTC they had 3 covers:

I don’t remember if the John Williams interview (which wasn’t very long) would’ve been in any of these issues…although I typically would look through issues that had something on the cover I was attracted to. It more than likely would’ve been one of TPM issues. Because it was definitely before AOTC came out.

Hmmm…it could be in this one too…

@timdiggerm
OK, yes, this is something I think I’ve heard before. Are there articles that talk about this anywhere? maybe on the DVD commentaries or something?

There’s even parts where there’s lots of “looping”. Like in the Zam chase there’s some percussion that seems to go on and on, where you wouldn’t normally hear this from Williams. The “mystery/Kamino” theme: even though it sounds kind of OT, again, it’s on a kind of loop if you will. Across the Stars is a nice piece, but it always seems to play out in it’s entirety. Whereas lots of times in the OT a theme will begin to play but then it will transition to something else as an action or emotion changes on screen. At least, this is what I’m picking up on.

On another note, I seem to recall in an old TV Guide with an interview of John Williams. It came out sometime after TPM but before AOTC. He mentions adding the Death Star music from ANH into AOTC. Of course, it ain’t in the movie…and I don’t know why. I don’t know if anyone has access to old TV Guides cirra 2000-2002, but that would be an interesting find…if I’m even remembering correctly.

Ah ok. So yes there is some of this going on by using bits of TPM score towards the end of the movie.

Yes I did know about the bonus track. The end of the track they used in the TV spots for AOTC. I remember taking not of it at the time but then noticed later (probably once on DVD) that it was absent from the movie.

I seem to recall hearing a classical piece very very similar…maybe by Holst…don’t remember.

Ah ok. Good to know. With that bit of info, I bet the Yoda/Dooku battle is one example of this. I’m sure it took them quite a while to nail down the timing of all the shots in that sequence. So to have the freedom to mix certain musical elements well into the editing phase would be helpful I’m sure. However, (if I’m even understanding all of this correctly) the score does seem to also suffer in this regard. John Williams TPM score is so wonderful (even putting aside Duel of the Fates, which I’m a bit sick of) and insanely detailed (for lack of a better musical term) while AOTC doesn’t seem to have nearly the same effort put into it.

Does anyone know why the Arena battle music wasn’t used but then latter repurposed in ROTS? If it had been used, where would it have been inserted exactly?

I’m wondering if there’s a video or some website that better explains what happened with the Attack of the Clones score. I looked at wiki and it isn’t explained very well. It doesn’t help that I don’t understand much about how a film score is really put together and produced. What does it mean when music is “tracked”? Because, apparently there was a lot of it in this movie. I know chunks of TPM were used. And I know pieces of the actual soundtrack were not used. There was never an ultimate edition of this score released, right? But I do recall some unreleased tracks put onto a Star Wars video game a few years later, right? I just have lots of questions about this score. And I’m wondering if there’s some corner of the web that has more answers.

And YES I’m looking to see if someone has the most complete version of the score that might be willing to share. 😃

KEEPERS OF THE PEACE (Attack of the Clones edit - RELEASED!)

I’m glad my thoughts helped!
Also, thanks for letting me know about the music.

Oh! I’ll make one more suggestion for your edit: See if you can smooth out the audio (specifically, the original music) where you’ve made cuts. Like, go into the surround channels and mess around a bit. That’s ultimately the only other jarring thing to me.

KEEPERS OF THE PEACE (Attack of the Clones edit - RELEASED!)
Time

I finished watching the edit and here is a bit of feedback…

The first change I really enjoyed was the ANH music added at the transition to Palps office. To me, that works well in helping establish a more “friendly” Palpatine.

If you make a 2.0 edit, I would consider removing the skeptical look from Yoda at Palps when he’s talking about extra security. That would help further establish we don’t know Palpatine is a baddy yet.

Again, nice addition of some ANH music. The OT sounds from Mr. Williams has some real emotion (for lack of a better word) behind it that a lot of the prequel scores seem to lack.

The scene where they all sit down and talk in Padme’s apartment: It’s a frustrating scene to edit. There’s only so much you can change because of the lack of footage and/or dialogue. And then, if you cut out the main piece of the scene which is Anakin and Obi-Wan bickering, the scene mostly becomes everyone sitting down and then almost immediately standing up again. With all that being said, your edit works pretty well. One continuity issue: Anakin says “We will find out who’s trying to kill you, Padme” and in the next shot he’s looking down. It’s just a bit jarring IMO.

The buildup to Zam shooting works well. What piece of music is that? It’s nice. Again if a 2.0 is going to happen, I would suggest removing the percussion from the first shot of Zam getting her gun. Since we all know these movies really well, we know when something has been changed by an editor. I think what I personally find jarring is when shots get shifted around (for a good purpose) but the audio (in this case, music) remains the same. So something like that takes me out of the moment.

Moving onto some of the color grading. I’m no expert when it comes to this stuff….I can’t always identify when something looks a shade different here or there. That being said, the Jedi achieves looked really cool in green! But why didn’t you finish the scene? They turned back to blue by the end of it. The only other thing that bugged me was in some scenes characters skin tones were desaturated except for their lips…they looked a bit orange/pink to me.

I like how you ended the scene with Anakin and Padme eating on the transport.

I have never seen anyone edit their first “kiss” this way. It threw me for a loop but it also works very well.

I also like the music you’re using in the asteroid belt chase…is that from TFA?

The best edit involving cutting the droids (specifically 3PO) out was Anakin and Padme leaving Tatooine. I can’t say I’ve seen anyone use this particular edit before. I liked it.

I know there’s not much to work with and you needed to somehow have Anakin and Padme brought into the deleted scene with Dooku…but it’s a bit odd. Using them going into the hallway with the Geonosians milling around behind them and then wiping to the deleted scene…it’s unclear as to what happened. I mean, WE know, but a casual viewer may not.

The ROTJ music with Palpatine being voted emergency powers does wonders for this scene IMO. Excellent!

I like the music choice for the arena monster battle here too. It seems like you’ve definitely put some thought into your music choices because they do fit into your scenes quite well.

Cutting out Padme’s jump is, of course, quite welcome! 😉

Again, the music added to the beginning of the battle of Geonosis is excellent! I would love to know all of your sources.

When Dooku turns to see Yoda and then turns away from him: you might consider zooming in a bit on that reversed footage so that it might hide the fact that it is indeed reversed.

And, again, the music at the end of the film is a really nice touch.

Overall (in case it’s not obvious), your music choices and placement are my favorite things about this particular edit. IMO, you could’ve gone much further with your editing choices…but AOTC is not my favorite to begin with…that being said, this is a fun alternative to AOTC. Thanks for sharing!

Star Wars: Remastered - A New Special Edition (* unfinished project *)

I say: do what you want for your edit. It’s…well…your edit.
With that in mind, I personally would love to have that shot redone with the original timing. And I’m also keeping in mind that you said you may change your mind. RogueLeader makes some excellent points. I know when I work on my edit I’m always trying to keep in mind where my eyes focus is. There are some excellent videos out there on film editing including on eye focus…i think there’s an actual term for it, but I can’t remember.

But again, it’s your edit.
