“A thought? Anyone?”
I turned down the denoising setting from full to half in gigapixel, and this is what I get. It seems full does smudge some fine detail, but no denoising keeps those hideous compression artifacts in, so this might be a better balance. Either way you can definately see the big difference that the software does to take highly compressed 1080p and transform it to uncompressed 4k.
This is pretty amazing! Could this bring about a better image quality to the PT DVD deleted scenes?
I seem to recall someone on these boards has said there is an upscale of the AOTC deleted scenes.
Is it uploaded to youtube here? :

If there’s something that looks better than that (let’s hope so), could someone help me out?
Again, another test. I really wanted to use the old school looking Attack of the Clones logo here:
https://images.app.goo.gl/TQ1xd3A4dFNCmXcy5
I couldn’t find a bigger one. So what better opportunity to get better at photoshop, right? Had to blow it up and use the pen tool and make a few shapes but it kind of works now:
Well I’M pumped!
Having fun in AE is long overdo! 😄
OK, well, I’m slowing catching up. I DID figure out how to get it to stop cropping. Yay:
I’m gonna remove the original…I don’t want my channel to get even more junky. 😉
It wasn’t until I selected a different format (while exporting) that a bright blue button popped up that said: “Match Source”. That seems to have done it.
Thanks for trying to help NeverarGreat!
That was solely in After Effects. I was editing this shot in Premiere. Obviously I removed Fett using AE but then I moved it on over to Premiere. I’m looking at my edit in Premiere right now and everything looks fine in my editing window. I play it and have no issues. Arg!
OK, so just an extremely short shot test:
I don’t even know if I’m going with this idea. But I wanted to try out the content aware fill in AE. 😉
BUT WTH?! It’s still cutting off the image! In Premiere I’ve got the sequence settings on 1280x720 and square pixels. As I edit, I can see the entire image. No prob. I go to export and use Match Sequence Settings and it shows it’s output will be 1280x720. But it’s cropping the image! Anyone got any ideas?
EDIT: I deleted this video and replaced it with a decent looking one down below! 😛
Ok, I’m stupid. I somehow blew right past the video on my phone. Went back and watched it and…yeah this is pretty amazing stuff! I’m finally able to wrap my mind around this concept now. An old school technique with a new high tech twist!
I stumbled across this article about in-camera VFX and it explains the process and outcome a bit more. Sounds cool! It sounds like this is what has been happening on the set of the new show. I hope we’ll see BTS footage at some point soon!

lol
By-the-way, how did you alter Obi-wan going through the window and out onto the droid? It looks like you recolored/darkened him…?
It’s about time this has happened! Seriously, this is one of the major improvements that has needed to take place for years!
I also agree with Anakin Starkiller…a shot of Anakin hanging from the droid would be very beneficial. Difficult, I’m sure - but very beneficial. 😉
and this is that featurette…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQzltwQwJxg
Yes! OMG! I haven’t seen this in forever! So it’s basically an unreleased web doc. Kind of surprising they didn’t throw this on the bonus feature blu ray.
Thanks for the link!
Anyone remember a rerelease of TPM (VHS) before AOTC came out that had a featurette about the upcoming movie? I remember a small snipet of the guy who plays Owen Lars talking about him and Anthony Daniels recreating their characters dialogue from ANH just for fun. I went looking for this VHS a while back but with no luck. Can’t seem to find this featurette anywhere.
The distinct deference between this release and the original VHS, was instead of the background color being black, the VHS was mostly covered in white. I think this was released after the DVD…or maybe along with it?
Just found a pic of it:

Edit again: this appears to be a DVD…but the VHS had the same cover…i don’t recall the backside.
Judging from your own clips, you seem to be getting the hang of it. 😉
Right now, I’m messing around in the trial version of After Effects. My plan is to use Adobe.
Thank you so much for the information, guys! Very useful!
I’m still trying to get my screen size figured out. What preset do you guys use? I messed around with every preset available but they would either stretch out and/or crop the image! Wth? The only way I got it to work was by selecting one of the 1280x720 presets, and then scaling down the image in the comp window itself. Shrunk it down to about 75% but it fits now…with black bars and everything! 😛 Will that screw me up later somehow? There still must be something I’m missing, right?
An update!!! Sort of!!!
So eventually I will get to actually starting this edit for real. I’m still using a laptop and I don’t have Adobe CC yet. Hopefully in the not too distant future this will all be remedied!
However, I did start the 7 day trial of After Effects 2019 and Photoshop. I’ve used earlier versions before but I wanted to just play around and test out a few VFX ideas.
I’m hoping a few experienced members here can help me out with some answers. I’m a noob at a lot of this stuff!
With the amount of visual manipulation I plan to do in my edit, I should really be working in 720, yes? I ripped AOTC using MakeMKV and it is of course 1920x1080 at around 30 or 40 GB. I shrunk it down to 1280x720 to around 11 GB.
Does this seem about right? With certain shots I plan on manipulating (and in some cases, zooming in) should I be using the 1080 file? Is there anyone here who is working at 1920x1080 and doing effects heavy work?
As I watch the original file (the one I shrunk down to 720) it looks fine to me. It has the “black bars” when I watch it in full screen mode. However, when I rendered out some unfinished tests, something about the aspect ratio seems off. The film is stretched out to fill the entire screen (no “black bars”). My composition settings are in 1280x720 with a 16:9 ratio…(I didn’t adjust any settings in the composition settings)…so what am I not understanding?
Another question: When I watch Adywan’s ESB, there are no “black bars” when not in full screen mode. How is this achieved? And for what purpose?
I sure would appreciate some help…or at the very least, maybe a link to some place that may have answers?
Thanks!
I’d love to see a live action Full Throttle with Mark Hamill reprising his role.

In theory sure, but compare TFA to ANH.
George’s version of “faster more intense” works, whereas JJ’s results in cringily overplayed scenes like Finn and Poe’s “good to meet you too” scene. On a related note, Oscar Isaac is really really bad in TFA. It’s like he didn’t know his character.
He either overplays it or under plays it. In the Trench run he seems bored.
I would say all of that is subjective. I liked the “good to meet you too” scene. And I think Oscar Isaac is good in the film.
Personally I find that the plot and even character inconsistencies can sometimes go right past me if the characters convey their respective emotions genuinely. Even on repeat viewings I will still give certain things a pass.
With the example of TFA VS. AOTC: the characters in TFA arguably emote better than in AOTC. Therefore (for better or worse) I tend to lean more towards TFA being the better film. There are things I enjoy about AOTC, but with the lack of characters emotions and motivations, the plot holes and incosistancies really stand out because the characters aren’t keeping my attention.
Also, George edited Jurassic Park, and I don’t see anyone complaining about the bad editing in that movie.
I thought he was there to help supervise the sound mixing or something. Micheal Kahn was the editor. He’s been Spielbergs editor for years.
There is nothing to suggest that small spacecrafts can go to lightspeed in ANH or in ESB (I’m right, right?). Not once is an xwing (or other craft around that size) shown going to lightspeed in either of these two movies (although it is sort of implied in ESB). BUT of course ROTJ comes around and makes it clear that they can.
Seeing as how Adywans versions are not strictly bound by the PT or ST, I was going to suggest that Adywan could decide whether or not the smaller craft have hyperdrive or not.
But it was pointed out that in ESB Revisited they are indeed shown going to lightspeed leaving Hoth. So the whole thing is moot.
Indeed an interesting topic. Thanks everyone. Shout out to RogueLeader! Excellent post. I hadn’t even thought about the rebels fleeing Hoth and going to lightspeed! Whether you’re watching Revisited or not, it’s definitely there. I do like the idea of space travel taking some time…I think what I like best are the character moments that happen in the midst of traveling (ANH and ESB)…having that short bit of time to breathe before the next scene. Movies move so quickly these days…sigh.
