Ranking the Batman films

I love the Dark Knight simply because of how strong the villains were and how well Alfred was portrayed. The Bruce Wayne scenes on the other hand are all really bland and some of the practical action isn’t very exciting. Hans Zimmer’s music also doesn’t help anything. The reason TDK was better than the other two was because of how strong the villains were in comparison but they all still suffer from many of the same problems.

How prominent is sulu being gay in terms of being shown?

I don’t care for me it doesn’t bother me at all but I’m going to see it with my grandpa. He’s been a diehard trekkie since TOS but he thinks homosexuality is wrong. He a never hateful or rude about it and would never put someone down for being gay, I just wonder how much behind-the-scenes bitching I’ll have to endure.

It’s a barely noticeable, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it background detail.

Minor spoiler:

All that happens is that Sulu puts his arm around a man and they walk off into the background with their daughter, so without prior knowledge of official statements, it could easily be Sulu walking away with his brother or another relative. I read somewhere that there was supposed to be a scene where they kiss, but it was cut.

END MILD SPOILER

Yep, it’s literally one shot in the entire movie. It obviously has an agenda but for those who were against it, it wasn’t very in-your-face and it doesn’t feel like it was even written that way originally.

Is it wrong that I never care to see another comic film adaptation ever again?
Didn’t think so.
At least not until they decide to actually adapt a comic property and not pretend to.

Dark Knight Returns, Parts 1 and 2

Watched these recently, meh. I prefer the comic itself. The movie is really faithful but they add in some stupid moments and it overall suffers from having a bunch of subplots that don’t connect. They should’ve just focused on one villain rather than 3.

Suicide Squad 7/10

Wow, I thoroughly enjoyed this film but it is NOT flawless. Here are my quick thoughts:

  • The first 20 minutes were edited very poorly, many scenes that should have been way longer ended up being chopped to shit while other scenes were way too long

  • The tone was all over the place

  • The reshoots were really obvious

  • There were many things cut from the movie that either felt missing or ended up in the trailer

  • The villain was really lame

  • Joker was really good but he was very underused

  • The flashbacks were all too choppy and short. Batman’s cameo was awkward and so was Flash’s.

That sounds like a heck of a lot of flaws for a seven out of ten movie.

Yeah, it’s more of a guilty pleasure to me but I think the second act and the dialogue/humour really made up for most of that.

  • Deadshot and Harley Quinn were great and the rest of the squad was good except for generic-sword-wielding-girl who made no difference to anything

  • The flashbacks were all too choppy and short. Batman’s cameo was awkward and so was Flash’s.

Overall I enjoyed the hell out of it but it wasn’t great. The performances and dialogue in act 2 were really good but act 1 and 3 were edited poorly and had way too much cut out. Hopefully we’ll see a bunch of deleted scenes for someone to go in and fanedit in as well as some trailer footage to cram in there.

I’m pretty sure Ahmed Best wore the suit for ROTS because he did an interview where he talked about a “dark and intriguing” scene starring Jar Jar that eventually got cut and hasn’t made it onto any DVD/BD releases yet.

Years ago I heard rumors of a scene where Jar Jar was killed by Clone Troopers in the Senate building. I even saw a clip that was probably fake, but since the whole movie looked fake I couldn’t tell 😉.

Nah, in the interview he said it was a scene where Palpatine thanked Jar Jar for putting him in greater power over the government. I’m kinda glad it was cut because the fact that Jar Jar promoted him in the first place is a big “fuck you” to the audience already.

Jason Bourne 8/10

I went in with pretty low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I really liked the first act and the end but everything in between was alright. I think Chris Stuckmann was too hard on the social media subplot given that it was only in two scenes and they were still suspenseful I let it slide. My main issues with the movie are:

  1. There are no “aha” moments in the movie. The trailer contains many cool moments that were either alternate takes or completely cut lines from the final movie (“MY GOD, that’s Jason Bourne” being one of them) which was really disappointing. The movie was lacking that “That should be easy, she’s standing right next to you” or “Get some rest, you look tired” moment but sadly it was nowhere to be seen.

  2. The realism fades away. The (way too long) car chase scene at the end became less like a Paul Greengrass action scene and more like a John Woo action scene. The chase has a SWAT truck that’s seemingly indestructible, plowing through infinite cars and buildings without taking any damage while Bourne survives it all off-camera. In several other scenes, Bourne is severely injured and recovers within minutes. Whether he’s been shot in the arm or fallen off of a building or sent flying off of a motorbike, he always walks it off and even fights people without facing the repercussions of having those injuries, he may be tough but he’s still human and humans aren’t invincible. The franchise used to be grounded in the idea that the story was realistic, how the CIA covers things up and how everything that happens is all plausible, this movie lost a bit of that.

  3. The movie’s pace is inconsistent. In the first three Bourne films, the scenes with the CIA characters in the computer rooms were really intense and gripping, making you want more information and building suspense throughout the film. In this, the characters sometimes take a small break to sit and have a simple conversation without anything interesting going on at all. Not all of the CIA scenes were boring but unlike Supremacy and Ultimatum there were scenes that made for a good bathroom break.

Other than that, I really enjoyed the film. I think a fanedit that incorporates some of the trailer footage along with cutting out some more boring stuff and removing the over-the-top action could make this a really good movie. Tommy Lee Jones and Alicia Vikander both did great jobs in their roles and I’m hoping for a few more Bourne films because this definitely opened a new door for sequels. I think they should switch directors again too, Greengrass has done a great job but I like the idea that they can all have different styles. Anyway, check it out guys!

Video Games - a general discussion thread

I’m playing Disney Infinity 3.0’s OT level pack and it’s pretty fun though the voice acting is pretty generic. I’m shocked that Mark Hamill didn’t record dialogue for Luke!

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens is also really fun. I one-hundred-percented the first two LEGO Star Wars games on my Gamecube in anticipation for this game and aside from a few glitches and framerate issues on level one, it’s pretty damn great!

Kill Bill: Volume 1 9/10

LOVE this movie, every time I watch it I love it even more. It’s one of Tarantino’s prettiest looking movies and it also contains some of his boldest moviemaking decisions (the animated sequence, the extreme violence, etc). Tarantino’s dialogue is great as always and the violence is spectacular. If you haven’t already, check it out!

Anne of Green Gables 6/10

Really funny dialogue and pretty good acting but that’s it, nothing very interesting goes on and there’s no flow or structure to the story, there aren’t separate acts or anything to break things up properly. It’s just three hours of a little girl saying funny stuff.

Jurassic Park 9/10

The 3D version was only $15 and it was really well done. They really put a huge amount of effort into the conversion. The movie is great already and this amps it up by a notch.

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW

People bitching about it not being done pissed me off in the first place and every single one of you should be ashamed of yourselves. I know the post is a few months old but this kind of shit is what drove Adywan away from the forum in the first place and I’m sure he won’t want to come back after reading your impatient passive-agressive comments. The least you could do is offer help if you want it done so badly.

Wow, the reviews for all the newer trek films are so mixed. I don’t think we can really rely on each other when it comes to them. Personally, redlettermedia’s review on Half in the Bag summed it up perfectly for me but I also disagree with their opinion of Star Trek (2009). I don’t love Into Darkness or hate it either, I think it’s the weakest of the three but it’s not bad at all. For me, Beyond and Star Trek (2009) are nearly tied.

SPOILERS START

I think the biggest issue with Beyond is how bad the reveal of what the villain (his name’s Krall right?) was all about, that scene was really lazily done. I think he worked pretty well at first but got increasingly bad which is the opposite of what most people said. Still, I let it slide because I enjoyed it quite a bit almost everywhere else.

What did you guys think of the tribute to the original cast and how Spock’s death got incorporated into the story?

SPOILERS END

All in all, I rank them like this:

  1. Star Trek (2009)
  2. Star Trek: Beyond
  3. Star Trek: Into Darkness

different prequel versions? what to watch?
Time

Well if you’re gonna get fanedits of the prequels you should definitely own the source so I recommend getting the full complete saga blu ray box set because it has all of the films and A LOT of cool bonus features. That being said, here are the fan-edits that I liked (more than others):

The Phantom Menace:

  • Q2’s Fall of the Jedi - Episode I: The Phantom Menace [heavily edited and has no technical issues, only runs 90 minutes]
  • Magnoliafan’s Episode I: Balance of the Force [Jar Jar is re-dubbed]
  • Yads’ Episode I: The Lone Gungan Edition [Jar Jar is re-dubbed and he’s the only gungan in the film]

Attack of the Clones (I’m gonna be honest I think this film’s unfixable but these two are the best of the edits):

  • L8WRTR’s Episode II: The Republic Divided
  • HAL 9000’s Episode II: The Approaching Storm
  • The Phantom Editor’s Episode II: Attack of the Phantom [I also recommend his commentary track]
^All of these are heavily edited but have slightly different cutlists. I recommend HAL’s for the good deleted scenes.

Revenge of the Sith:

  • L8WRTR’s Episode III: Dawn of the Empire [I also recommend his commentary track]
  • Kerr’s Episode III: Dark Force Rising [sadly low quality and rough editing but has some of the most interesting changes of the lot]
  • HAL 9000’s Episode III: Labyrinth of Evil
^These are all heavily edited but I’d go with L8WRTR’s because he cuts pretty much all of the worst elements of the film whereas the other two leave in a little too much.

If you need help getting fanedits, as long as you own the source, send me a PM, I’ll be glad to help!
