This is the last of my Star Wars books.  I donated about all of the EU stuff to my local library.  The stack of pages on the top shelf are copies of all the scripts I found on the net, plus my Indy comics.

So some monsters act as threshold guardians.  Other monsters are just... there.

The Sarlaac seems to be one of these.  It has only the purpose of representing a scary death.  I suppose a bottomless pit or a rock masher at the end of a conveyor belt would serve the same purpose.

Ok, lets get back to the original question.

I think monsters are essential to the story if one looks at the stories as the Heroes Journey with all of the Joseph Campbell archetypes.  Dragons need to be slain if one is rescuing the princess.

I suppose the Bronco's get a bit of support here, but I've never liked them.  And my cousins were front running back when we kids in the 70's, so they jumped on the Cowboy bandwagon.  So naturally, I rooted against them.  Even today, I root for the Redskins when they play the Cowboys.
