Can the story of the prequels be fit into only three films?
Time

Well, I typed this fantastic wall of text here and I thought to myself- I should put this into a notepad incase it fails to post... I didn't.  And it did.

So here's the crappier shorter version that I can rewrite without breaking my own heart:

1. Are you all aware of the rewrites forum here on OT.com?

2. Who expected to see Vader in 2 of the 3 PT movies?  I wanted to see him in 0 of the movies because I wanted the movies to end with the apparent death of Anakin.  I know a lot of people wanted more Vader than was had.  Just wondering how many people wanted 2 movies of Vader...

3. When laying out a structure for my mPT to follow, I came up with 4 rought movie plots.  Which isn't quite true- I came up with 4 movie endings.  Which also isn't true- I wanted mEp1 to be a light hearted romp where everything about the mPT could be established and importantly- the friendship between Anakin and Obi-Wan could be firmly established.  Then I wanted to get into the fall in mEp2 & 3, but I had 3 movie endings within that structure.  To make a long story short, I had to compress the first two structures into a single structure and I think my story was the stronger for it.  It gets into the danger a little earlier than I had wanted, and it short changes the "Obi-Wan and Anakin" are best buds timeline somewhat...  But what can you do?  You can't release 4 Episodes prior to Episode 4.

4. I had a 4 in my previous post.  I wonder what it was about?

TO BE CONTINUED!

waiting...

Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck's work on SW
Time

Here's my recreation of my copy of the book.  Remember the asterisk indicates work by Huyck and Katz:

Luke sits in the co-pilot's seat.  He and Han stare out at the vast blackness of space.

*LUKE:  So...What do you think of her, Han?

*HAN:  I'm trying not to, kid.

*LUKE:  (Under his breath)  Good ...

HAN:  Still, she's got a lot of spirit.  I don't know, do you think it's possible for a princess and a guy like me ...

LUKE:  No.

Luke says it with finality and looks away.  Han smiles at young Luke's jealousy.  They both stare at the stars and think about it.

...Threepio intercedes on behalf of his small companion and begins to argue with the huge wookiee.

THREEPIO:  (To Chewie)  He made a fair move.  Screaming about it can't help you.

HAN:  (To Threepio)  Let him have it.  It's not wise to upset a wookiee.

THREEPIO:  But, sir, no one worries about upsetting a droid.

*HAN:  That's because a droid doesn't rip peoples arms out of their sockets when they lose ... wookiees have been known to do that.

*THREEPIO:  I see your point.  (To Artoo)  I suggest a new strategy, Artoo.  Let ...the wookiee ... win.

Tobar, I think you are cheating!

that is why it is a very nice thing g-force did by posting his scripts on the first page of his thread, if people are dead set against it, there is always the option to do it yourself, but like I said, I am not final yet, but getting close.

yeah after you went and synced up all the audio.....

Not following you, what are you getting at with that statement?

I guess I'll go ahead and vbangle, since there is a first time for everything.

I believe he just meant that since you already did the hard work of syncing all the audio, whatever you decide will be fine with him.

Did you just use vbangle as a verb?

Just chiming in to say hello (longtime lurker here),and that the amount of time and effort you all have put into the comparisons? Brilliant and I thank you. Until I began reading this thread,I wasn't aware that the trilogy had been altered on such a massive scale.

Case!  (or is it Casé? ;) ) Welcome to the boards!  Feel free to post more often, bra.

My problem is Anakin is not the good man Obi Wan spoke of.

Nor was he a good friend.

The character motivations make no sense in the story.  My whole opinion is Anakin turned to the Darkside because he was dumb and was tricked by a lie.  A lie so transparent only a complete simpleton would fall for it.

That lacks power as a story.  There is no hubris in trying to do the right thing and thinking the ends justify the means.  He is just duped and a moron.

A less than 2 dimensional character.  There is no human compassion or character in him in those movies to make Luke want to save in in jedi.

My biggest problem with these movies Lucas has a strong visual sense so he uses that to try and hide the fact that he cannot weave a consistent narrative that makes any sense or is powerful.  If this was supposed to be Dante's inferno, and Milton's paradise lost it was the worst version of those archetypes ever conceived on video and not film.

Lucas idea on these films was that if you shot enough footage and coverage you could create the story in post.  Why have a usable script when you can just do it all on the fly like he did in film school, cinema verite and all that.  He used those horrible scripts as a guideline to shoot the footage but the dialog was atrocious and he thought he could compose the performances in post also so he would combine multiple takes and so on, or film actors separately but then splice them into the same scene when the actors are talking to an empty greenscreen set which is claustrophobic and not conducive to a ensemble film.

And bookmarked.
