terror in london
Time
the problem here is that terrorism is not a physical force. It is an ideology.

you CAN NOT FIGHT AN IDEOLOGY WITH GUNS AND BOMBS!!! you don't even have to take my word for it. There are hundreds of case studies over history. Heck, christianity is an example, the romans tried to stamp it out and it eventually became their central religion. The problem is that bush was "pressured" into this. Do you honestly think that the majority of americans didn't want to see a grand war? Heck, don't you think that half the world wanted to see it? REmember all the sh** that bush got into when he sent the bin ladens back by plane? Do you know why he did that? It was becuase he might have been pressured into imprisoning them or worse. Now here is the problem with fighting an ideology. Every death does not remove from the overall force. It increases it! Martyrdom is HUGE in ideologies. This should be a damn media war, and the ati-terrorism side is losing it! Heck, a lot of media is presenting terrorists as repressed citizens fighting against american oppressors! WTF!!!!! how the hell is that going to help people understand that terrorism is wrong!?!?!?!?!

back to Iraq. Bush can not back out now!!! Britian can not back out now!! nobody in there can back out now!! to do so is to admit that terrorism is effective, that the terrorists have won! All those people asking otherwise are F**** idiots! Do you honestly think that pulling out will make things better? No! It will make things worse! How many people do you think will flock to the extremists whe they discover that they ca maipulate the most powerful countries in the world? Think about it outside of all the liberal bullsh** for a moment! Every secod that is sped philandering about the war is another second that the extremists gain a notch in power. That is what a media war is! And we are losing it! iraq was supposed to be a media coup for America! The headlines should have read "America crushes terrorist hot spot" "Democracy triumphs!" instead its "riots in streets, americans say no!" or "people say back down, terrorism triumphs!". I take it at least some of you are minor historians. What was it that fueled the flames of world war 2? the propaganda machine! (I had to do a final on the subject)

Webcomics!
Time
yay! my first new topic!

...

neway. THis is a webcomic discussion topic. That means webcomics. as in w-e-b-c-o-m-i-c-s. Not about your mother, anybody elses mother, or who you currently want to sc***.

my current list of favorite webcomics - ctrlaltdel (ctrlaltdel-online.com) megatokyo (megatokyo.com) rpg world (rpgworldcomic.com) penny arcade (penny-arcade.com) chasing the sunset (fantasycomic.com) and USERFRIENDLY!! (WOOT) (userfriendly.org)

i used to like penny arcade a lot more, but it seems to have gotten.... dunno.... not as fun as of late. There is less characterization and more... doonsbury if you get what I mean.

rpg world - if you have played ff7 read this comic. if you have played any rpg read this comic. it the funniest thing on the internet for gamers.

userfriendly - read this comic. nuff zaid. if you use a computer you will appreciate it.

megatokyo - for anime people. also for people that have anime friends. two guys go to japan and spend all their return money on anime and game collectibles. did I mention one of them incessantly drinks beer and hallucinates? or that his conscience is a hamster?

ctrlaltdel - if you are a gamer you will like this comic.

chasing the sunset - meh. its okay.

list any good ones you can think of.

iNTEL INSIDE

....

it begs to be said.

if anybody can find the "mac gamer" movie please link it, it is hilarious.

I notice nobody has mentioned "widgets" yet. Its a new thing for OSX that has some pretty nifty features. Its a blank space that you attach different "widgets" to. My widgets are a weather widget (gives me temp, weather, highs,lows, and forecast for my area.), a dilbert widget (gives me the current dilbert) a Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy infocom widget (its damn hard) a 1or 2p Othello widget (theres also tetris, space invaders, pac man etc) a unit conversion widget that allows me to convert between imperial and metric in area, volume etc. Plus 2 really cool widgets for itunes. One allows me to play, stop, skip, alter volume, etc. The other is a cool new widget that allows me to type in the name of a song and its author and it will search my library and play it.

in point.

widgets are cool if you spend the time to customize them.

Harry Potter *Spoilers* (Serious Discussions Only, No Flaming)
Time
in response to the "how good is harry potter" debate.

first to all the bashing.
on one side we have the people (in my town at least) who lined up to get a perfectly good book at midnight for 20% off. It included free food, drink, and a coupon for a chance for a 1000 dollar shopping spree at the store.

on the other side we have the people walking past said line, going "harry potter *bleeaaaah*, making rude gestures and laughing drunkedly amongst themselves.

now we have the question of which one group are the idiots, see if you can figure that one out.

second to all the fawning.
harry potter is so cool because the media has made him so cool. If you have read upward of several hundred fiction and sci-fi novels, you would realize that harry is *nothing special*. It is a superb "childrens book" (I would be inclined to call it younger teen and had it been classified as such would not likely have made such big headlines). But I have read just as many books that had just as endearing characters and storyline. If I had to name one thing about the harry potter series that makes it popular above any other stories of equal merit is Hogwarts itself. A School setting has the unique effect of allowing adults to optimistically reminisce their school years(like bull it was good enough to reminisce about), and children to wishing that their school was like that one. Plus quidditch is cool, learning spells instead of math would be a heck of a lot of fun, and everybody has a snape and a malfoy at school.

like has been said earlier there are plenty of people who have made equally enthralling worlds. Tolkien. CS Lewis. Mccaffery. Anthony. Pournelle. Niven. Bujould. Pratchet. To name a few. However, Lewis and maybe Pratchet, are the only of these authors that make books at the children level. Pratchet's series are more appreaciable at a younger teen level and Lewis's novels are *shudder* "Christian" and non-discussable in public circles. (note the resounding silence regarding the upcoming "narnia" movie regardless of the fact that I *know* it was and is hugely popular.)

in short. Harry potter has enough going for it(though not as much as people like to claim) and to dismiss it simply on the fact that the people reading it are "nerds" is the same as dismissing vegetables because people that eat them are "health nuts" or better yet, to dismiss beer because those that drink it are "drunken freaks".

edit: in reply to above
only 10$?

here's an interesting thing to note.

look at the spacing of the 6th book.

note that it is 1.5 line spacing.

note that the spaces between words is double the norm on a processor.

note that the font is slightly larger than her other books.

note the size of the book.

note how quickly you seem to read it.

note that I do the same thing to make my essays look more impressive, it is called padding. It gives me a better grade and makes the damn book more expensive.

AND WHY DO YOU FEEL THE NEED TO COPY MY AVATAR

becuase I want to make it highly confusing as to my actual existance.

for that matter how do you kno that you aren't actually shizo?

are you sure your sane? and if so, by who's standards? yours?

would you trust an insane person if they told you "i am sane?".

Code Wars: Return of the java
Time
I've heard it said that star wars junkies and forum folk may talk a lot about technical stuff, but when it comes down to it, they really don't know anything. Let's prove them wrong. Post some code and see if the other's can tell what it does *without* plugging it in and running it.

I'll start: anyone dare to take me on?

public boolean ****(String fileName)
{
resetDataBase();

TextInputFile f;
f = new TextInputFile (fileName);

while ( !f.eof() )
{
String localFirstName = f.readLine ();
String localLastName = f.readLine();
String localGender = f.readLine();
String localAnime = f.readLine();
String localPublisher = f.readLine();
f.readLine();

Character aSingleChar = new Character(localFirstName, localLastName,
localGender, localAnime, localPublisher);

insertSingleChar (aSingleChar);
}//End while

f.close ();

if (numChar > 0)
return true;

else
return false;
}// End ***** ()

edit:// there were spoilers...
