I just did a color match and blend with another day shot and then tried to simulate what the sun looks like when it’s burning your retinas out. This shot is now a vertical descent rather than a horizontal approach.

Interesting idea, but it’s not quite working for me. If the sun is supposed to be burning the eyes out it should be pure white, in your clip it’s sort of greenish gray. And the shot still feels horizontal. It might be from knowing the original shot, but there’s nothing indicating anything other than a horizontal angle.

Could the pink color come from a red glow on a blue background or from a blue color grading? Such as a blue sky or the dark blue Eadu scene. Same thing that gives Darth Vader a pink saber in his duel with Luke.

I don’t really think this is the case though, pink seems to be canon. They’re pink in Battlefront too (look at images of the Rogue One VR mission).

Other possibilities that might (or might not) be worth considering to keep the “fast cut”:

• BB8 reacting first (without TIE sounds), making Rey look up. However I’m not sure it makes sense with the direction Rey is looking in. I think Finn and Rey are on opposite sides of the castle so they wouldn’t be looking at the same thing anyway.

• Keep Rey reacting to TIE sounds and then cut to Finn reacting to crowd noise. But I guess this might feel a bit off since that would give the feeling that TIEs have been passing over Rey for the duration of the cutaway to Finn yet she just stands there. This problem is technically in the fast cut as it is, and I feel like it works there but might not work without Finn seeing TIEs.

The fast paced restructuring wouldn’t work if the added TIEs are replaced with just a Star Destroyer. In the fast paced version Rey looks up because she can hear the TIE engines and Finn does the same. But if it’s just a Star Destroyer Rey wouldn’t hear it and Finn would react only to the sounds of the crowd reacting. So Rey’s reaction would need to be saved for later when the TIEs are revealed. I guess I’ll just have to try and see how that would work.

Excellent work. I think the only piece of the puzzle is some replacement score audio from Sir Ridley for the First Order appearing over Maz’s Castle.
EDIT: At least, I think that was the plan. I apologize; I’ve been busy with the actual, real job lately.

I think you’re right! At least that might be the biggest thing. About that scene, apart from adding “they’ve found us”, I need to know which edits you want and don’t want. Like the sunset, “those beasts”, etc.

I know that Sir Ripley was working on removing the timecode from the deleted scene so that it could be useable in this edit. Apart from that, I don’t know what the decision was on the Finn line edit. It can be rendered in full quality as well if there’s interest in using it.

Right, I haven’t tried much yet but I think it will be doable. Which Finn line do you mean, the one where Poe mentions the weapon system?

I’m glad the crawl is appreciated! 😃

Jackpumpkinhead said:

so did you use these same type of techniques for your crawl?

I don’t know exactly how it was done for TFA but I used the same software and got a close match so it’s probably similar.

Basically it’s just a text layer in 3D gliding past a simulated camera with depth of field, and then there are small adjustments like blur and a slight gate weave motion added.

The prequels just had perfectly sharp steady digital text, but TFA emulated the old analog OT crawls for nostalgia, so I did that too.

I rendered a crawl! Not lossless, but I’ll do that when the time comes to put everything together. I also included my edit of the stormtroopers in the troop transport ship. I didn’t like the glitchy flashy cutting, it didn’t feel very Star Wars to me, so I toned that down. Oh, and I’ve replaced the main theme with the recording from Episode I, which I prefer.

Having him ask that question out of nowhere wouldn’t work I think.
Maybe he could be the one who asks about Republic support but I think it’d work better if someone else were to ask that question.

Maybe Admiral Ackbar? With his puppety mouth inserting a new line somewhere could be possible.

Isn’t it possible to use 3PO to deliver the line in a way he would say “The Republic won’t send reenforcement/ships/fleet ? We are doomed !” ? (note that Daniels made 3PO voice in TCW, I wwonder if someone familiar enough with the show would know if there is a line to be taken from an episode)

Since he doesn’t have a mouth to sync to the line this would be the simplest solution. It should be possible to piece something together from all the voice work he’s done for TV, games etc.

Haha, gorgeous. Yes, I would love to have you render out yours, even after tinkering with mine for so long. When someone with power tools offers to help, put down your hand tools. I would, however, request using the same font for the title as the theatrical version of TFA.

No problem! 😃 I’m changing it back to the theatrical font now, it’s probably for the best.

I watched a presentation by the guy in charge of graphics and holograms on TFA and he mentioned how they carefully mimicked the original crawls by replicating lens distortion, film gate weave and other things digitally.

Pretty interesting if you’re into that kind of stuff:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsFvSgg2-Yo

But of course it’s even cooler how they did it originally, by filming actual back lit text.

Anyway, I’ll tweak it just a bit more and then I guess I’ll try a render.

And, Ridley, that looks great! I’m already able to render my own crawls, using JackPumpkinHead’s Blender template that mimics Adywan’s crawls. I just had to tweak the timing. BUT, if you wanted to render a version of yours, it couldn’t hurt for me to compare them and decide if either of them edges the other out. It’s up to you, though.

Sure, I can render a clip! I takes a while, so it might be better to save it for later in case you decide to change the text again. But I might render it anyway, I’ll link it here if I do.

I think technically my version looks a bit closer to the original one (after all, they used After Effects for the TFA crawl). I closely matched things such as the blur on the text in the distance.

I changed the font of the title to match the crawls of VI and I-III but I might change it back to the original again (IV, V, VII) as they will probably keep that one going forward.

Bah, I’ve worked for hours on this, and nothing fits. It’s fine though, I’ve realized that ‘Finn’s familiar with the weapon system, he worked on the base’ is audibly identical to ‘Finn’s familiar with a weapon system, he worked on the base’.

So I’m fine with leaving it as it is, and leave it up to interpretation as to whether or not Leia was aware of its existence before this moment.

I think it’s pretty great. The mouth editing could be slightly better, it seems like the mouth moves down a bit at the beginning of “a weapon” and the shot looks a bit blurry (but maybe it was a bit out of focus to begin with?). Also the shot of Leia just before becomes choppy for a few frames, if you slowed it down it could use some frame blending to smooth it out.

It is a bit odd to just casually mentioning “the base” though, as if everyone involved knows there is one. Perhaps it could be changed to “their” base or “a” base?

I also like your idea on how to include the deleted scene, I think it could work well.

Episode VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS

Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the Empire, along with a secret weapon to secure their return to power.

Failing to convince the New Republic of this emerging threat, General Leia Organa mobilizes a covert RESISTANCE to gather allies from the farthest reaches of the galaxy.

Desperate for her brother’s help, Leia has sent her most trusted pilot on a daring mission to Jakku, where a clue has been discovered to Luke’s whereabouts…

I mostly like this, but…

“… along with a secret weapon to secure their return to power.
Failing to convince the New Republic of this emerging threat …”

Implying that Leia knows about SKB and is telling the New Republic? Hmm.

“General Leia Organa mobilizes a covert RESISTANCE to gather allies from the farthest reaches of the galaxy.”

Mobilizes a resistance to gather allies. I feel like these are variations of the same thing (get people together to oppose the First Order). Maybe something along the lines of “General Leia Organa gathers allies from the farthest reaches of the galaxy to form a covert RESISTANCE.”

Crop out Chewie from that one shot and it’s perfect.

I cropped even more… so it’s cropped a lot now. 165% upscale. And a few arm hairs can still be seen for a couple of frames. But it’ll do.

I used After Effects Detail Preserving Upscale and then applied a new layer of fine film grain.

Could you post a clip? I’d be interested to see how it does with the music, before I get all my tools laid out again.

Will do.

https://youtu.be/NQ_r1ttBWhM

There’s a small hiccup in the audio 11 seconds in, but that’s a bug of some sort that can happen at an audio transition when exporting 5.1 surround to stereo, I’ll get rid of it later.

And also, Chewies arm can be seen briefly at the edge of the screen and he is seen in the crowd shot as well. Perhaps this could be covered up, to make it seem like he went straight inside.

I guess since Poe is mentionned it’s about time to also talk about the ending, when SKB is destroyed. I would then suggest again to get rid of all the cheers scenes and to directly cut to the bitter scene at the Resistance H.Q. So no “our job here is done” and no “Leia hugs Rey while Chewie is vanishing in the background”.

In my version I’ve done exactly this. “Our work here is done” is cut, and the Leia hug has been cropped to hide Chewie.

I’d be very interested to know more about your own edit since I believe TFA needs as much fanedit work as the PT (so something like removing around 20 minutes). When “Restructure v2.0” is released are you going to open your own thread ?

Optional:
Remove sunset TIE shot

Noooooooooo 😦

Regrade outdoor scenes to evening/sunset

Why not. TFA looks fine but it could look better.

Change Maz’s line “Those beasts! They’re here.”

My man 😃

Put back cool X-wing shots from trailers in the battle

Good call here. I know someone already made it in his own edit.

I guess I’ll open my own thread sooner or later, but for now I’ll stick to helping with Restructured. And about the changes, they are under “optional” because they are either unnecessary or controversial, so everyone will have to make up their own mind about them. Personally I’m thinking about removing the sunset, unless the grading of surrounding scenes make it more convincing. I might leave Maz’s line as it is, as it seems to make sense with the lone Star Destroyer, or possibly just remove “Those beasts!”. The extra X-wings are obviously not necessary for Restructured, but I put them in because it was mentioned earlier.

About my own edit, I’m not removing 20 minutes. So far I’ve removed about 2 minutes (mostly of the Rathtars, and some minor cuts). I think the movie is mostly great as it is, with some minor annoyances, so besides what HAL has already done I’m making small cuts, small additions, visual adjustments and other things where I feel it’s needed.

About the Maz’s castle attack scene, here are the changes needed (as I see it now):

• Lone Star Destroyer
• Alternate music and sound
• “They’ve found us”

Optional:
• Remove sunset TIE shot
• Regrade outdoor scenes to evening/sunset
• Change Maz’s line “Those beasts! They’re here.”
• Put back cool X-wing shots from trailers in the battle

I tried the Kylo shuttle idea, it looks fine but doesn’t really work after all, so I’m on board with only the Star Destroyer. I’ll revise my edits and see what we get.
