We attend a church that preaches anything outside of heterosexual monogamy is “in contempt against the will of God,” and they’re both in agreement.

I’ve never understood that. What does god have against same-sex couples?

Since being gay is not a choice, but who you are, it’s not really something anyone can blame you for. Least of all God, if he made you.

It’s not something that anyone should blame anyone else for even if they could, either. You love who you love, and love is a great thing.

I could agree with adding a space Tesla could be a nice time capsule reference.

But disagree on Leia being in it. That’s just strange.

Yeah, any form of space Tesla reference could be cool. I just went with the most ridiculous one that came to mind.

It displeases me that humanism and secular humanism have become conflated. The core tenets of humanism resonate with me, but I’ll never be able to identify as humanist without causing others to believe I’m a rationalist/materialist/non-theist, which I most certainly am not.

It displeases me that as a non native English speaker who is not used to discussions about beliefs I don’t know the definitions of humanism, secular humanism, conflated, tenets, rationalist, materialist and non-theist. As a result your post makes no sense to me, but I would like it to. I guess I should just read up on these things.

Don’t worry about it. I’m a native speaker, and there are times when I’m not sure if I even know what many of those words mean. 😉

Thank you, haha. As a result of my worries I got to learn a few things though. Worry is likely an important aspect of humanity that can force us to take action to make things better. See my edit above.

Okay, that wasn’t so hard. I understand you know. I can also conclude that I might be classified as a secular humanist/rationalist/materialist/atheist. I don’t really see the problem of people believing you are one thing or the other, though. The worst thing that can happen is that you get to explain your view and have a philosophical discussion.

What instruments do you play?
Time

My dad is a musician and my mother is an instrument teacher but I can’t play any instrument myself. I would like to be able to play piano, because you see, I’m one of them newfangled computer musicians so if I knew how to play piano I could record that playing into my computer.

I can still make music happen as I compose and produce everything “in the box” so in a way I play every instrument, and yet I play no instrument.

I would say my biggest strength is in editing and producing and mixing, so if any of you real musicians have songs recorded that are unfinished or just needs a bit of polish I wouldn’t mind having a look at them.

And wouldn’t it be cool if the forum musicians recorded a song together? Could be.

Changed my mind.

What.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/change one’s mind

What exactly did you change your mind into that made you do such a thing?

Watched the movie a couple months ago. Thought to myself: “Good movie, but not really one I see myself revisiting often. I’ll probably hand it off to the other members in my family and free up some shelf space.”

Watched the first two seasons of the TV series a number of weeks later. Thought to myself: “I really like this. I want to eventually own this on DVD/BD. I’ll hang on to the film after all, since it’s all one big universe.”

Oh, so you did keep it? Solid reasoning both for and against keeping it. I really like the movie and the series, but I don’t own them. I might pick up the movie at some point.

Ever since I was a wee lad I wanted to see every Robin Hood movie ever made. It’s not a burning desire so much as a sustained curiosity. According to Wikipedia, there are a whole lot of them to see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_and_television_series_featuring_Robin_Hood

However, I’ve limited myself to only Robin Hood movies released in theaters. From that list I own the following, annotated with their best quality:
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) - The best Robin Hood, period.
The Story of Robin Hood and his Merrie Men (1952) - The best Maid Marion.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) - The best outlaw hideout.
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) - The best Errol Flynn since the original.
Robin Hood (2010) - The best rendition of a realistic England.

Furthermore, I have seen and wish to own:
Walt Disney’s Robin Hood (1973) - The best Prince John, Friar Tuck.
Robin and Marian (1976) - The best old man Robin (sorry, Russel Crowe).

This leaves me with quite a few movies yet to see, mostly from the 20’s-60’s era. Does anyone have a recommendation of a version of the tale (TV or film) that I simply must see?

There’s a short Swedish cartoon movie from 1975 which is shown on TV every Christmas Eve called “Christopher’s Christmas Mission” in English. It’s not about Robin Hood, but about a boy who works at the post office and idolizes Robin Hood. One Christmas he decides to take all the outgoing packages for rich people and hand them out to poor people. It’s a real classic in Sweden and a favorite of mine. I guess it doesn’t really fit your criteria, but it’s a nice little film anyhow.

The SW logo has almost the exact same motion as in TFA. I chose to not match the prequels in that regard as I’m personally a fan of having the logo readable from the start. Your brain can recognize it from the first frame instead of just seeing the middle part first. It’s just a few frames, not a big thing, but that’s what I think.

It’s impressive that you noticed it. I’m not really a crawl expert outside of the things I’ve learned while doing this so I didn’t know about most of these slight differences between each episode’s crawl.

No need for a medal though! Chewie didn’t get one. The droids didn’t get any. Leia deserved one too, of course. Not saying I’ve been snubbed, I’m just saying. 😉

While we’re adding necklaces we should add those ANH medals in later movies as well…

I’m so overwhelmed with life I seriously feel like I can’t bear it. I so badly want to shut it off but I can’t. I can’t relax. I can’t sleep. I can’t eat. I can’t shut the thoughts off.

I’m 11 days without alcohol still but that isn’t even the problem. I don’t feel cravings or temptations to drink at all. It wouldn’t make me feel any better, my problems are with real life and it’s almost too much to bear. I’m sure the recent quitting of alcohol is making me feel overall worse since actually feeling so much is new but I don’t even care I don’t need a drink, I need my life back. I don’t want to keep living with this pain.

No one should have to feel like that, I wish that you come through this well and as soon as possible.

I don’t know the full nature of your problems, and though I wouldn’t say my life is going perfectly I haven’t had experiences anywhere near yours, but I would still like to share my thoughts about this. I hope I don’t come across as presumptuous.

First of all, it’s good to see that you are willing to share these feelings here. Talking about it is good. Professional help is one way, but anyone that will listen can be helpful. I’m glad this thread exists.

And I hope you can find the strength to take steps toward changes in life, momentary changes and long term changes. I’m happy to see that you have already taken huge steps for the better. You can strive to change the things you feel bad about, and in the meantime distract yourself from dark thoughts. Music, movies and games can be one distraction of course. Creating something can be another. I recently came across your thread about your music, which I enjoyed! Very skillful. I make music too, and I find that I easily forget everything else once I get into it. Getting lost in something like that from time to time is probably a great thing.

Any kind of experiences that stick out from the usual can also be helpful, I think. A walk, a cold shower, good food, visiting someone or going away somewhere, trying a new hobby. I just hope you can find a break from bad things and dark thoughts in some ways like that.

Anyway, I don’t know you, you don’t know me, but I hope you will get better soon. That is all.

Oh, I would also like to say a small silly thing to you which recently was said to me in all seriousness by another member of the forum. It actually felt really nice to hear it, as I don’t think anyone had actually said that thing to me before (and actually meant it), so here goes: May the Force be with you!

I think the Jerjerrod deleted scenes should be restored.

If we can get a McDiarmid soundalike to dub in the Emperor’s lines seamlessly, then yes, absolutely.

Soon we’ll have a program for that - we already have one to recreate people’s faces… people’s voices mustn’t be too hard. Someone will eventually create an algorithm that analyzes pitch and every single factor that goes into someone’s voice and be able to recreate it. I really don’t doubt it.

Its only a matter of time. Adobe’s Project VoCo is an example (still unreleased) and a company called Lyrebird is doing something similar too.

What crawls are the new crawls going to match? Like, the ANH one or the TPM one, what font, etc.

And is the necklace scene going to be in? (I really hope so, just for the miniseries payoff)

Since I’m doing the new crawls I can answer this. They’re based on the look of the TFA crawl, but adjusted to look more like the prequel crawls. The title font is changed to the one used for the prequels. The colors have been adjusted to match each prequel crawl color and the position of the crawl against the background is changed a bit from TFA to closer match the prequels.

The most noteable differences between the original prequel crawls and the new crawls are the angle of the text which is slightly different, the STAR WARS logo which doesn’t start out quite as large as the prequel logos, and the formatting of the text which uses more natural looking spacing (no big gaps between words) similar to how TFA did it.

I’m also working on the necklace. I think I can squeeze it in there, but if I do it will only be glimpsed for a moment.

So, about After Effects. For the Yoda scene (and this kind of work in general) the main things you need to learn are masking, tracking and keyframing. Here’s a good page for tutorials to get you started: http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/

And here are some basics from Adobe:

Masking:
https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/alpha-channels-masks-mattes.html

Tracking:
https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/tracking-stabilizing-motion-cs5.html

Keyframes:
https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/animation-basics.html

Here’s how I imagine you could do your ghost effects:

  • You start out with a layer of the original movie, naturally.

  • Based on what is behind Yoda in each shot you need to create a new layer of the things that should be seen through Yoda’s ghost. This can be an image (or several image layers, or a video, depending on the specifics of the shot) that you create in something like Photoshop.

  • You then need to place that layer on top of Yoda and have it follow the motion of the shot. You can move the layer around using keyframes, or track the motion of the original shot. If you go with tracking I suggest adding the tracking motion to a “null object” and then “parenting” the layer you want to move around to the “null”. You now have Yoda removed, basically.

  • Now you need to “mask” things. This is also known as rotoscoping. Mattes are a similar thing too. You need a mask in the shape of Yoda on the layer covering Yoda so you don’t cover up too much of the shot. When you’re done the mask should follow Yoda’s outline and stay with him as he moves. Adjust the feathering of the mask and keep the blue glow around Yoda but nothing else of him.

  • Copy the original movie layer and put it on top. Add the same mask around Yoda, but inverted so you only keep Yoda and not what’s around him. You can now adjust the transparency of this layer to change how transparent his ghost should appear. You can also adjust the color of this layer using something like a “tint” or “curves” effect to make him more blue.

  • Aaand that should do it, for the most part. I think. We’ll see what happens when we start working on it.

Which is better? Premiere Pro or Sony vegas Pro?

I don’t think one of them is objectively better, both have different pros and cons. Personally I like Premiere and haven’t tried Vegas. Premiere is more common than Vegas in Hollywood (I think a majority use Avid though) and probably more common among video editing professionals. But the important thing is the results you get and how the program feels to you. And you might have to consider the cost as well. So use whichever program you like.

I was thinking about color-correcting Yoda’s force ghost. Comparing a screenshot of him in TLJ to the end of ROTJ shows that the new movie went with a dark blue filter and no transparency. This makes him look a bit chubbier than he should.

I’ve never used After Effects before so I don’t know if I will have to go frame by frame or if there’s template settings that could be applied for each camera shot. I’m also considering leaving the moments with Yoda and the burning tree alone because the silhouette of the fire against Yoda looks cool. Maybe I’ll do the whole scene for the sake of consistency.

If you don’t feel like learning After Effects someone else (like me perhaps) will do that scene eventually. But you could try anyway, I think I have an idea of how to do it so I can give some tips if you’d like.

My thoughts about that scene is that I would like the classic blue transparent look for the force ghost, but perhaps keep a little more solid look for certain parts when Yoda affects the physical world (lightning, hitting Luke with his cane).

Info: FakeApp - useful face replacement AI software for Fan Edits?
Time

Full Solo teaser:

Decent results, not seamless. I don’t think the technology is ready for replacing an actor across an entire movie (yet). And the face can’t be high resolution (yet) so it doesn’t look real on closeups and HD video. But it could be useful in certain instances, like holograms and characters not too close to the camera.

Not sure if the puppet face would look good in a CGI character, but worth a try. Really like the idea for Palpatine.

Agreed, particularly for the ESB hologram scene (though it’d be nice if he looked more ROTJ-like in ROTS, too, I suppose).

Wait, the ESB hologram, really? Ady already did that?

And he did a very good job with what he had available to him at the time, but it’s still rather stiff and photograph-y (though it’s my preferred version of the scene by far). I’m mostly just curious to see how well this would work in comparison.

Here’s an idea. Since the software replaces the entire face you don’t have to be limited to existing footage. Based on the dialogue you want you could film an actor (or yourself) miming the words in a McDiarmid way and moving your face how you want (less stiff). Then you replace that stand in face with McDiarmid. For best results the stand in face needs to be similar in structure to McDiarmid, lit in the way it is in the movie, and perhaps including the cloak/hood.
