Free "farewell" Screening of 1977 Star Wars collector's print (British I.B. Technicolor)
Time

Thanks for the youtube link. I have to wonder if someone recorded the whole thing. This was a golden opportunity to record an "live audience" track. ;)

Even if the collector in question was on our side and willing, (like Jaxxon) the gear to telecine a 35mm print is not easy to come by, let alone someone willing to do the job and "no questions asked".

This has been the stumbling block with that board member (whose name escapes me right now) who actually got their hands on a 35mm print of ESB.

Maybe someday the stars will align, and we could have a super secret OT screening somewhere.

That's pretty cool! It looks good too. makes me wonder 2 things: did the 1981 release make it to Britain? and did they make all entirely new prints for it, or did they just put the new crawl into existing prints? (Or just replace the first reel?)

The Derann Super 8 is sourced from a British print, and has the '81 crawl on it.

And damn! I wish I could have seen this.

Fantasia Hybrid Edition (* unfinished project *)
Time

Although I'm opposed to any movie having characters erased from them, and this is a product of it's era, I have to wonder what Walt and his animators were thinking putting such an anomaly into a mythological setting. Especially when you have those zebra centaurs attending Bacchus who are not drawn as stereotypes.

And Disney should really stop marketing Fantasia as a movie for kids anyway. My experience with the 70's and 90's theatrical reissues was that many kids get really bored with it when Mickey is not on screen, or get the screaming meemies even before Night on Bald Mountain. ;)

My visit to Star Wars Weekend 2010.

A Sith wearing a Thundercats t-shirt? What would Lord Sidious say? And Peter Mayhew is starting to look more like Yoda these days. ;)

Seriously though, thanks for sharing these. The shoe thing is a very original idea!

I wonder if Disneyland ever does these sorts of events? Can you bring your own pictures to be signed? I still have photos from the 10th anniversary celebration that need autographing. :)

Creating the Worlds of Star Wars - 365 Days, by John Knoll (was: Millennium Falcon Exterior Sets)
Time

Well, either Lucasfilm was spouting disinformation back then, or it's doing so now because nobody really remembers what happened anymore. Parts of the Dagobah set were supposed to be stored for Jedi as well.

You'd think there would have been multiple takes of the exterior of Yoda's house leftover from Empire though.

I do know small pieces of the Falcon were contest prizes given away by the original SW fan club in the 80's.

As to British Labor laws, if you listen the commentaries on the Bond films, they reused M's office set all the way into the Roger Moore era until it was too worn out or rotted to be rebuilt again. The double red door 007 entered through was saved though.

If you've seen the PSA restored and included on Puggo Grande, that set is clearly made from walls of the Death Star control room. The ad was shot long after Star Wars wrapped filming.

David Prowse Banned - Not Paid Royalties
Time

I think it requires some acting skills to convey authority and evil while shouting through a plastic helmet. The other actors need someone to react to and interact with. Something Lucas forgets about sometimes.

There is certainly no doubting Peter Mayhew is giving a performance and not a set of moves. They tried shooting scenes with his stand in on Empire when he was physically exhausted from carrying Threepio around all day. They could only do long shots because the character just wasn't there.

And just for fun, here's Prowse as a superhero very well known in England.

It was written about in a couple places that the complete Falcon built for ESB was carefully dismantled, mothballed, and placed in storage so it could be used again for Jedi.

It's possible they only reassembled what was needed (or be visible) for the sandstorm scene.

And it's a damned shame nobody thought about giving it to a museum after that!

I'm curious as to why they didn't use it for the Rebel hangar scene though. The matte painting behind Han and Lando always sticks out for me.

It's a dick move on Lucasfilm's part if true. Fans will still stand in line for Prowse's autograph after all these years.

Whether somebody else could have played the part is really not an issue. People want to meet the guy who originally did.

It would be a PR disaster for Lucasfilm if Prowse crashed the party, and was escorted off the premises in full view of the fans. ;)

The Empire Strikes Back Panic Attack Cut
Time

I thought perhaps Lucas might rough cut his version on the fly with the video dailies he was receiving. He and Coppola were keen on that sort of thing long before Hollywood got on board.

IIRC, some Wampa shots didn't work as planned, like the one of a claw breaking through an ice wall in the rebel base, and they gave up on it to keep things moving. That scene made it into the Marvel adaptation though.

If you've seen the SPFX documentary, the Wampa couldn't walk very well on location!
