opinions on film restoration/preservation and how it applies to Star Wars - what do you think should/should not be allowed?
Time

Is it possible for theatrical projectors to be cranked up too high? I certainly recall times when a movie was too dark than it should have been. (Some drive-ins were notorious for this.) I've heard explanations that bulbs were run into the ground way past when they should have been replaced, or being dimmed down several notches to save a  few bucks. Feel free to correct me if this is all baloney.

Nice to know I wasn't the only one who formed the Tie Fighter shields theory about the garbage mattes, in spite of the fact the suckers are so easy to blow away. ;)

Take a look at the Blu-Ray box set of Aliens that came out last year. Wow, what a set! I'm not even a fan of the last 2 films but it was such an incredible set with so many amazing extras that I ended up with the full collector's edition egg! And I don't even like 2 of the 4 films! But 2 versions of each film and endless hours of extras made this a must-buy set. Another example - the Blu-Ray set of Space:1999. An old half-forgotten sci-fi tv show from the 70's, yet restored to an amazing level of quality, with some very impressive extras. Yet Star Wars makes it's debut on Blu-Ray and most of the extras already sound utterly forgettable.

I'm more excited to see Empire:Revisited.

Space:1999 actually has a pretty healthy fanbase worldwide. (I still have my 1976 Mattel Eagle!) Conventions are still being held. There is even an ongoing fan edit  of the series that's pretty amazing, comparable to Adywan's work.

Gerry Anderson is essentially the George Lucas of tv in the U.K., and it's a safe bet his other cult shows will hit Blu Ray. Thunderbirds has been cited as an influence on the look of the current Clone Wars series

The final destruction of star wars is complete with no restoration of the originals there is no viable film print for theatrical exhibition ever in the future, never mind no decent home video release. The films themselves will be forever lost.

Lucas self fulfilled mission to erase the originals from all but our childhood memories is complete.

Between what the AFI, BFI, the LOC, and the mysterious owner of the Boston Technicolor print have, lost isn't really accurate. Suppressed might be a better term.

Katie is the one who said in that documentary on A and E that her dad is not a recluse.

But he has a Citizen Kane like estate Skywalker Ranch, lol.  Which i think is hilarious.

Fortress Skywalker to keep out all those annoying fans wanting an autograph or the press wanting an interview.

Everyone has a right to some privacy, no matter how famous they are. And there's a darker reason to keep random people out of your front yard or driveway. Remember that lunatic who wanted to do very bad things to Steven Spielberg and his family in the late 90's? Celebrity stalkers are a very real problem.

SW, like most of us here, has been a very important part of my life for decades now.  I won't get into the whole story, but I had a really rough time growing up and the SW movies were an escape for me...I also have very fond memories of bonding over SW with people who have since passed away.  So when people say they are "just movies", well, to some of us they are not because of all of the nostalgia we have attached to them.  From a more artistic point of view, SW was groundbreaking for its time and was one of the greatest achievements of human culture...whether you like it or not, you cannot deny its impact on the world.

This, this, and this. Well put!

Are we to surmise that those documentaries have been restored and will be in HD?

Either way that's a bitter pill (to finally divorce us from Mr George).

If they are as we already have them what so special about them to justify them as special features on a HD format disc set?

If they have been restored why restore them and not...say...the original theatrical versions of the films that started the whole thing off in the first place?

It's a good question! Classic Creatures was apparently finished up on SD video, so it may be stuck that way. All the others were completed on film, and 16mm library prints are around, or so Jaxxon tells me.

Kind of telling Making of a Saga wasn't included. Lucas doesn't want some old contradictory interviews getting back out there? ;)

The other question I've got is will all the non-SW clips in SPFX and Classic Creatures be cleared? SPFX has never been uncut on home video, (some Disney clips were excised) and Toho is kind of finicky with Godzilla these days.
