THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)

I'm really disappointed the 4400 is that soft looking. I expected better from an industrial grade player. (It's built like a tank.) I was also about to dive into capturing a bilingual disc that only has English on the digital tracks, so the 8210 is less than ideal for that.

I may have to keep my 704 around now that it's fixed.

The prequels' influence on pop-culture?

I don't think The Matrix has aged nearly as well as the original Star Wars film. When I saw it in '99 I definitely thought it was an A+, but only a few years later I could not really give it anything better than a solid B. Part of it has to do with my increasing distaste for elaborate and heavily choreographed action sequences.

Well we can disagree on that last one, but I was rather talking about its influence and impact, which I think is safe to say was pretty huge.

It's not a such "clean", all-around paragon of a great action adventure film like Star Wars.
But it's extremely memorable, and has wreaked its fair share of havoc :)

I don't think it's long term impact was huge. It's rather forgotten today IMO. For the first 3 to 5 years afterward; yes, it was highly influential.

People still dress as characters from the films at cons. I saw two life size statues of Agent Smith and Trinity at Monsterpalooza a couple months back.

It's a safe bet a lot of people have the movie on Blu Ray at this point. The DVD was the "disc you pop in to show off your HT system" for years.

Did I do a capture from the 704? That has some internal video processing that can't be switched off. I have music video discs that play fine on my 8210, but "smear" on the other two machines.

Even with everything switched "off" on the 704, I could see some ghosting going with hologram guy's head when he walks up to THX and SEN in the white void. It was even worse with the noise reduction circuits turned on with a test capture I scrapped.

4(as opposed to 3) audio tracks for the original theatrical run of Star Wars?

There were consumer Dolby decoders on the market in '82? I didn't even see one until the late 80's.

I was seeing old Quadraphonic amps command high prices in used stereo gear shops and they would fly off the shelves in thrift stores, beacuse that was supposedly the only way to decode surround sound at home at the time.

No, I had problem register on that site for some reason, maybe you could give it a shot? It would be really nice to have it in better quality.

SilverWook, can you do me one last favor, how does the color look on this computer screen...

...on that LD/Beta transfer? Don't necessarily need a screenshot of it, I'm just a little curious about this one as the colors are very unstable on this particular screen. (it's bright green in the 2004 DVD) Want to rule out any possible flaw in the LD transfer.

I was going to do a DVD capture anyway, so no problem. I just found a place to get 8 gig flash drives for 15 bucks, so sending you stuff in the future might be a little cheaper now. :)

Sorry to hear this is still giving you headaches. :(

Got the '86 Japanese LD yesterday, and it's the same awful transfer used for the Beta. (With subtitles added of course.) Interesting thing I didn't spot before is the image is slightly squeezed in the early reels, resulting in everyone looking taller and thinner than normal. Pity the whole movie was not squeezed.

It's also remarkably inconsistent in that some computer displays are squeezed enough to be readable and the "Officers In Service" display isn't, nor does it pan over to the right of the frame to show the numbers change.

What do you LIKE about the Prequels?
Time

Not easy, but it has been done. ;)

Ben Burtt said in one of the documentaries backwards is a pretty limited thing, and it can be recognized for what it is. (There are characters speaking backwards in Barbarella that are pretty obvious.) That probably explains the lengths taken to record exotic dialects around the time Jedi was made.

No sepia tone. Might be a whole different print that was used. Didn't see our little thin white friend, but the pan and scan could have hidden him.

There are reports of HD DVD's going bad recently. I already found a unplayable disc among the 30 or so titles I own. If I had a larger collection I'd be more worried.

I hate that slow as molasses Java crap that's on some Blu Rays, but at least the format has matured enough that you don't have to update the firmware every other week anymore. I saw a bin of Blu Rays at the supermarket last week, and got The Dark Crystal for nine bucks! I paid almost a hundred bucks for the Collector's edition Laserdisc back in the 90's!

Anyway, I should have the '86 THX Laserdisc by next week. :)

Credits? We don't need no stinking credits!  The guy running the telecine was either drunk or out getting a smoke at this point. I wonder if George ever saw this version? ;)

Msycamore, the sequence of scenes on the Beta tape are as follows...

THX on trial

Robot police poke THX with sticks in detention (The pan and scan is so bad on this you hardly see the cops at times!)

THX probed and analyzed

THX controlled by unseen technicians

LUH visits THX in detention

Will try to post some screen caps tonight...
