Revenge vs. Return
Time

That was fast. ;)

I would think Kenner was on the "trusted" list. They actually blacked out photos of the Ewoks in their catalogs, and possibly the cardbacks too. They also kept Boussh's true identity obscure for a while.

The fan club dished out some disinformation back in the day. One person interviewed in the newsletter about the production casually mentioned Aunt Beru was coming back!

They definitely needed "Blue Harvest" on location. I'm not sure how an alternate title with Jedi in it was going to fake anyone out. And it's a little hard to hide the fact a Star Wars film was being made at Elstree anyway.

If one believes the tale of phony script pages given to people deemed a security risk, an alternate title isn't going to help or hinder much.

I'm trying to recall if any Kenner toys hit the shelves with the Revenge logo. I do recall the mail away offer for Admiral Ackbar being a character from Revenge.

I used to have that patch. The original fan club gave those little beauties away with the membership renewal kit. They also sold a ton of Revenge posters that were probably scalped for hundreds more back in '83!

Lucas mentions Revenge during the production of Empire in the "Once Upon a Galaxy" book.

There's also this...

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!

Is anyone planning to um, document the version in the theater?  Granted, I don't really care about this 3D stuff, but it would be interesting to see if there are additional cuts or "fixes" that never make it onto blu-ray.  I don't know if I trust the new "theatrical" version to be the same as the home release.

I know a lot of folks on here would be interested in the IMAX cut of AOTC, but it wasn't, you know, documented at the time.

IMAX no longer has the time limit it did when the shorter cut of AOTC was released, so it's likely we won't be seeing that version again.

I am a bit late to the party with this but if anybody has any use for a 1991 dated FOR PHILIPPINE HOMEVIEWING ONLY fullscreen VCD over two discs, let me know.

For what it is worth, I have always thought that the LD vs DC DVD versions as a splitscreen comparison would be brilliant. If I ever learn the skillz, I will give it a shot.

I was beginning to think I hallucinated seeing this on Ebay several years ago!

Could you take some pics of it or post some screen caps?

Oh, and have you guys checked out this:

http://www.worldcat.org/title/thx-1138/oclc/56520465/editions?start_edition=1&sd=desc&referer=di&se=yr&editionsView=true&fq=

It's database of all the formats and editions of THX-1138.

Another good find. Some of the entries are strange, as there's a listing for a 1995 DVD. A five inch floppy disk version too?

Have you guys already seen this one:

It says 1989 with a run-time of approximately 88 minutes.

I've heard of tapes with mold problems, but YIKES! Makes me grateful I live in a relatively dry climate.

Hopefully, it's just a Portugese dub of what we already have.

One last thing. I figured this might be of interest since it's related to THX-1138 and could be used an extra bonus material.

It is 1971, THX 1138 was released on March 11, American Zoetrope is spiraling towards certain doom, Lucas has become even more disillusioned with Hollywood than he was during his stint on McKenna’s Gold, and where exactly things go from here for the upstart and its members is all up in the air. And while American Zoetrope and Coppola had slowly started to cause waves — mostly due to THX’s failure as it were, though also because Coppola wasn’t afraid of touting American Zoetrope a state-of-the-art facility which could outmatch Hollywood, and that the company (and thus himself) was the future of filmmaking — Lucas was little more than a promising student who had made an obscure sci-fi film which opened small and died fast.

During the summer of ’71, as all of this is happening, Gene Youngblood interviewed the then 27-year-old Lucas for a Los Angeles-based educational TV station, KCET in an hour-long program called George Lucas: Maker of Films.

This was taken from an article found here:

Here is a direct download-link to the video of the interview:

Good find. I think someone already did a preservation of this a while back.

Yes, I'm saving all the things on my computer right now, all the THX files are already safe, so no worry.

I hope that just a reinstallation of windows will solve my issue... had you not a similar issue some time ago Silverwook?

Very happy to hear that Puggo found the time to work on your print. That is great news! Thank you Puggo! :)

I haven't had any major problems lately, aside from the need to get better editing software. It's not a major issue unless I have to tackle some of the other preservation projects I have in mind all by myself.

If those people on the surface are Eloi, THX is in big trouble! ;)

IIRC, Lucas says SRT is a hologram on the commentary. (I've never been able to see if there's a body in the wrecked car or not.) It's also possible the "actors" are never allowed to directly interact with the general population, and that isolation distorts their own concept of reality?

Amazing costume!

It would have been costly and time consuming to do the optical work, but Grevious could have been done that way. He could have also been animated in Go Motion for the complex shots too.

This scene from Labyrinth was shot on a black backdrop, with the puppeteers also dressed in black.

"How they could have done the prequels with 80's FX" would make for an interesting thread? ;)

lol, where's jar jar?

anyway, so this is being released in both 3d and 2d?

Lucas has a sycophantic fan-base but im not sure anyone would have an incentive to see this in 2d after releasing the blu-rays.  does fox have some sort of distribution clause that every 3d movie needs a 2d version?

I haven't paid much attention, but it appears to me that LFL hasn't really released much info on this or provided any behind the scenes sneek peaks.  During the 1997 SE, there was plenty of footage provided.  Even the IMAX release had an article detailing the setup work involved in making AOTC into an IMAX film.

That trailer is kinda hard to read - it starts off by strongly suggesting all 6 films will be released but then focuses solely on TPM and makes no reference as to when the other films will be released.  I was always dubious on the whole 'one film a year' thing.  Looks like they didnt want to risk oversaturation of all things Star Wars,  but 6 years is an eternity in technology time.

@doubleofive - great anecdote! yeah, it seems lucas' half-assed and laughably disingenious attempt to convince everyone that he's really an art-house/experimental/auteur cinema filmmaker hasn't worked out and people still see that he's in the franchise business.  always was, always will be.

Every major 3D release I've seen ads for mentioned a 2D version. Not every multiplex has 3D on every screen, and some patrons aren't going to see a 3D film for their own reasons.

The SE's were released in the space of a couple months back in 1997. A similar pattern ought to work here. They could at least get Jedi back out in theaters for the 30th anniversary.

Rinzler writes about Marquand in Blueprints
Time

I find the lack of any Marquand interviews on the Blu Ray unfortunate. (They dug up vintage Kershner interviews from the archives.) He must have sat down for a chat on the set at some point?

Aside from the Classic Creatures doc, he' s barely mentioned if at all in the other material on the bonus disc.

Hopefully, Rinzler's forthcoming Jedi book will set the record straight.
