your thoughts: Did Disney kill star wars because it sounds like they did with the last jedi solo and resistance.

All broom boy did was levitate a broom. It’s been implied Luke was subconsciously tapping into the Force which helped his piloting skills on Tatooine before he was even aware of it. Ditto for young Anakin. That’s not instant knowledge of the Force.

When the Jedi went looking for Force sensitive kids, I imagine levitating small light objects is one of the tells. Another child might display precognitive abilities. Still another might be a great pod racer. They would be pretty hard to find otherwise.

His life before trying to flee with was like an Oliver Twist/Artful Dodger scenario, (street smart, but not cynical yet) only without a kindly father figure like Fagin running things. He trusted his ladyfriend at that point at least.
In any case, it’s Star Wars, not the mean streets of planet Earth.

It really wasn’t an origin story so much as how Han met Chewie and got the Falcon, and we’ve known how he won it since 1980. The later Han Solo novels were much more lengthy and detailed in Han’s history than this movie. This was just a fun adventure like the early Brian Daley novels, which I’ve loved since I was a kid.
Are superheroes ruined for you because you know how they got their powers or decided to fight crime?

If any character’s origin is mysterious, it’s Yoda, and should remain so. And they’d better not de-mystify the Force by explaining that…oh crap…

Superheroes aren’t ruined by origin stories, because usually we know their origin stories from the get go.
There are rare exceptions like Wolverine, and many would argue that his eventual origin ruined the mystique of the character and was disappointing.

As far as the SOLO movie ruining Han…I don’t think it ruins the character, but it doesn’t do the character, as played by Harrison Ford, justice.
In ANH we get the impression that Han is a scoundrel, this shades-of-grey character, who shoots first. The good guys enlist his help, only in return for money. Or course Han has a change of heart at the end, but we’re led to believe he’s led a pretty questionable life up to that point.
In SOLO…

He’s pretty vanilla. A very safe, acceptable Disney hero. He’s Aladdin.
Normally, I’d say that the character is ruined for me, but SOLO is so different from the character we saw in ANH that it feels more like fan-fiction, than canon.
It’s a fun movie, but again, very safe. I think Han Solo’s real backstory is a lot more crazy.

We’re seeing him at very beginning of his smuggler career. It would have been unrealistic to show young Han fully formed as the character we met in ANH. The Brian Daley books painted a good picture of Han as someone who rarely trusted anyone but his Wookiee pal. One character threw the question Where are the people in your life? at him. He plays at being cynical to avoid getting attached, avoid pain. But he also occasionally does the right thing. He smuggles weapons to a group who have little chance of defeating their oppressors, (outnumbered and inexperienced) but takes the time to show them how to work a blaster properly.
If we get a second movie, I’m sure we would see Han become more like that cynical guy who ended up smuggling drugs for Jabba. 😛

I kind of doubt they make the exact same film stock as was used in the 70’s. That film stock caused no end of preservation headaches for many a film shot in that decade to begin with.

Digital Intermediates have been the industry standard for quite some time. I don’t think anybody does it the old way anymore, if the ability to do so even exists at all. Might as well carp that they didn’t edit the film by physically splicing it together.

When has Disney ever trashed the prequels? Kind of odd, as prequel characters are quite prevalent in the theme parks. Jar Jar being the exception.

Let’s not pretend there weren’t a number of cast and crew involved in TFA championing it as a “return to form”, Simon Pegg being Simon Pegg, and the huge marketing push endlessly touting all the practical effects in the film. They didn’t come out and say “the prequels were crap and this is better”, but in a lot of instances they may as well have.

Let’s not pretend there wasn’t a section of the fandom that didn’t like the prequels. You can’t blame certain individuals for trying to reassure those fans and get them to come back. I will concede that the practical effects angle was overstated, as the prequels did have some practical FX, but every movie has some spin doctoring going on in the publicity dept. The sequels and the story films still reference the prequels.

I fully expect there will be some subtle and not so subtle return to form shade thrown at TLJ in the coming year as we get closer to Episode IX. I don’t think that’s Disney’s official corporate stance though.

The Clone Wars movie wasn’t a bomb, but it only cost 8 and a half million to make. Your average Pixar or Dreamworks movie costs a lot more. (According to IMDB, TCW made a modest $35 million domestic, and $68 million worldwide.) No current live action SW film is ever going to have a budget that small.

I think we’re at levels of SW merchandise saturation that surpass 1999 Phantom Menace levels. Kids and fans can only buy so much stuff, and other franchise’s merchandise compete as well.

I saw several kid size Kylo Ren’s on my doorstep this past Halloween, if that’s any indicator of anything.

The Star Wars franchise has been inconsistent in their portrayal of Dark Side corruption.

In the OT the only instances of Dark Side corruption are Vader and the Emperor, with both having very pale skin, and in the Emperor’s case in particular, yellow eyes. Later we meet Darth Maul, who has the yellow eyes characteristic of the Dark Side, but retained his youthful appearance throughout the twenty years leading up to the Battle of Yavin. Count Dooku shows no signs of Dark Side corruption implying his fall to the dark side has been relatively recent or he doesn’t draw from the Dark Side as much as others do. ROTS really screws up the whole notion of Dark Side corruption by revealing the reason Palpatine looks the way he does in the OT is because of Mace Windu deflecting the Force lightning back at him (I always assumed it was because of his many years immersed in the Dark Side), and finally we have Anakin Skywalker whose eyes only turn yellow when he’s really angry or something. Finally we have Snoke and Kylo Ren, with Snoke looking very old and decrepit but doesn’t have yellow eyes even though he’s established to be a longtime practitioner of the Dark Side, and Kylo Ren who been a Dark Side practitioner for at least ten years yet doesn’t show the slightest hint of Dark Side corruption.

This franchise seriously can’t make up its mind regarding the whole dark side corruption subject.

I will help you with that, Disney doesn’t count as cannon. Only the Expanded Universe counts as cannon in this case, cause the EU makes sense when it comes to Dark Side Degradation.

They’re both cannon because they’re both explosive and damaging.

Why so much EU hatred from you Duracell?

Because 50-60% of it is deleterious garbage. But that should please you, no? That leaves 40-50% which is better than anything Disney has churned out.

Are you Kethleen in disguise or something?

No, but I wouldn’t pass up the chance to get in her pants.

Again, please keep such desires to yourself.
