Episode III: Revenge of the Ridiculousness

TV's Frink said:

Heh heh. Artoo ought to say something when when he's spotted, when he sprays, and when he leaves?

I'll look at it, but my feeling was that it might interfere with the Frink lines.

Will you be doing the elevator muzak gag again? There could be a typical elevator "ding" before the door opens...

I'll probably add the Duke Nukem muzak you suggested a while ago.  And someone suggested using the H2G2 talking elevator lines, which I like.

I think that might have been me?

Artoo could simply say "WRONG!" right after the 24 hours line.

Just occurred to me the muzak can grind to a halt when the elevator stops, sparing you having to overlay it on Obi Wan's dialog as it echoes over the comlink in the landing bay. Have it whir back to like when Artoo restarts the elevator.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

The last time THX aired on TCM, it was the 2004 version. Really goes against the grain of what they stand for.

There were running "Future Shock" themed films on the weekends last month, but THX was curiously absent.

If it ever airs again, there's always the off chance they pop in the wrong tape. They have inexplicably shown Close Encounters of the Third Kind in pan and scan more than once.

ANH - Chewie attacks from smuggling compartments scene?
Time

The novelization mentions they were found as Tack said. Once they knew intruders were on the station, the Falcon was the obvious place to check out again.

If Obi Wan can sneak by the troops stationed near the tractor beam power relay, he could probably cloak someone next to him with the Force.

And as Luke said later on, "I can't see a thing in this helmet." ;)

I wish they didn't. I see why it may be desirable for the preservation projects, but otherwise, it makes my skin crawl, when I see a movie that came out on DVD in wide screen like 15 years ago, still being broadcast in 4:3 - and it happens all the time in my country.

There are several new channels that are broadcast here as SD subchannels of HD stations. Their programming is mostly made up of old tv shows, and 4:3 transfers of movies. I never thought I'd ever see Lawrence of Arabia in pan and scan ever again! I don't think there was even a full frame VHS of the restored version.

I've only found one that broadcasts in 16:9 and they tend to show movies in their proper ratio, (or close to it) but some of the old shows like Charlie's Angels are horribly cropped 16:9 remasters.

Would be nice if a pre 2004 version of THX aired somewhere in the world.

I know Michael Pennington can act but he is comically awful in ROTJ (he looked like he was going to pee his pants all the time Vader was onscreen).

Julian Glover who is my favorite Who villain...probably...and perfectly fine in ESB is similarly awful in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade but Denholm Elliott and John Rhys-Davies are pretty awful in that film too and there are no doubts about their talent.

One could argue the stress of the job was getting to him. After all, high ranking Imperials don't get fired, they get choked. ;)

Are we done with the cast is old and overweight jokes yet? :/

CGI is all in how you use it. The Narnia movies have had guys in creature suits with the facial expressions augmented by CG. Beats the pants off of interacting with the proverbial tennis ball on a stick. ;)

I still can't think of a good reason why there couldn't have been at least one physical clone trooper costume made for the prequels.

This has been discussed somewhere recently and someone said that they 3D scanned the models into a computer and then used that, at least in Episode 3.

Ehhhhhhhhhh, they might have scanned the maquettes to use as a basis for the CG characters but I can't see them scanning entire miniatures.

It's not like they are too big to be laser scanned. Mount Rushmore was laser scanned a few years back.

If the Falcon and any other classic ships are coming back, that would be the best way to make sure they look right in CGI.

Obviously there were more creative ways to deal with nudity in the '90's. I was referring to a much earlier era where even a butt shot was verboten. :)

The WB Tv logo at the end dates the print to pre 1984...

The "snap pans" in the 16mm print are a pan and scan attempt at showing the whole scene. Try running them side by side, and you'll likely find it's the same shot. Pan and scan can be less obvious to the eye when it's done on film versus a video master.

Puggo - Jar Jar's Yoda said:

FWIW, I never thought any of them (Fisher, Hamil, Ford) were very good actors.  But what they did have is on-screen chemistry - they weren't great individually, but they were fantastic together.  It takes more than a good script to achieve that.

Objectively, the only really great actors in the OT, in my opinion, were Guiness and Cushing.  Every time they were on screen they lit it up.  And Yoda, but I'm not sure what that means.

It means Frank Oz gave a great performance too. George has expressed frustration he couldn't get him nominated for a best supporting actor back in the day.

There is now a similar debate over whether motion capture actors like Andy Serkis deserve such recognition.

How many interesting poses can one strike while forcibly neck chained up to a giant slug? If they weren't sultry enough for you, blame it on the people behind the camera. ;)

Leia being able to use The Force ought to be dealt with in the story. If she's more politician than Jedi, those abilities can give her an edge, or take her down a dark path that's hopefully more subtle than what we got in the prequels.

A tv network could probably make it own awkward cuts to a film in the old days. I saw plenty of films mangled just to tone them down for broadcast back in the day. Nudity would either be totally cut, or the frame would be heavily zoomed in to crop the offending body parts.

By the 80's, directors would often plan ahead, and shoot alternate footage or blur out the naughty bits optically. Blue Thunder and The Shining are good examples of this.

It's too bad that other 16mm auction got away, it was clearly labelled as a tv print.

And praise Ohm you found those radio spots! :)

HDTV vs. Computer Monitor, any real difference these days?
Time

Depends on what's on sale I guess.

Anyway, thanks for the replies. Bought a nice 28 inch set. Felt like the holiday madness was already in full swing at the store today. The analog inputs and tuner might come in handy later on.

Best of all, I got the laptop back in the ancestral computer room after nearly two years, and I'm sitting in a more comfy position again.

Now, I just have to get used to the ergonomic keyboard I bought. ;)
