Those of us who've been collecting the format since the 80's have seen far worse. The idea of using a pristine source for a video release simply didn't happen much until well into the 90's.

I know it's probably moot now that the print has been secured, but there's a Laserdisc on Ebay fairly cheap at the moment, if anyone is still after it.

There were probably still plenty of mono crackerboxes in 1983. I think ROTJ played at least one Drive In in my area back then. (They had those metal window speakers to the very end.) Maybe we'll get lucky with the audio of the 16mm print Puggo's working on.

The first Star Trek movie did generate some good PR using fans for the recreation deck scene where Kirk addresses the entire crew.
Except their chances of actually being cast are as likely as a snowball fight on Tatooine. If someone prominent in fan circles calls them out out on this, Disney will have a PR stinkbomb on their hands.
If that is the case, it's kind of a cynical exploit of the fans on Disney's part. I don't recall Lucasfilm doing this sort of thing on any of the prequels.
I'm guessing in the case of the Artoo builders, there aren't any union rules to get in the way of them being hired.

Lucas' desire to wrap everything up in a hurry probably didn't leave room for a more plausible downfall. A scene with whoever was left of the Imperial command structure deciding to order a stand down and surrender might have helped.

I've been questioning whether it's a publicity stunt from the beginning. I remember similar cattle calls in the past, and somebody already well established in the industry, (who wouldn't be caught dead at one of these things) always gets the part.
This kind of thing is older than the search for someone to play Scarlett in Gone With The Wind. ;)
The crux of the argument is this: Does the Empire fall in a day after ROTJ, or does it take some time? The Special Edition would have you believe in instant collapse. The original version mostly leaves it up to the mind of the viewer.
So, is it worth going out on a cold winter night to see on the big screen? I think I can make the 10pm show if it doesn't sell out, which seems unlikely on the Monday before Turkeypocalypse.

Just got an idea from something said in the Random Thoughs thread. The whole celebration montage at the end could include shots of Hoth and Dagobah. Just an empty panorama with the loud sound of crickets or wind.
