I think 1998's Godzilla is meant to be more like King Kong.

Essentially the creature is a victim. It's biology has been screwed up by what mankind has done to the environment, it staggers around Manhattan in more in confusion than malice. Being shot at by little pink things (mostly) in metal flying things and then it's children are killed.

GODZILLA (1998) is a remake of THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS (1953) in all but name only.

After atomic testing, fishing boats mysteriously start to disappear and in a pattern that leads toward New York City.

Soon after a giant creature emerges on a Manhattan dock and proceeds to raise havoc and destruction as it wanders the streets.

The creature disappears and the army decides to lure it out by dumping an enormous pile of fish in the middle of the street. The lure works but they fail in their attempt to destroy the creature.

Later on the army is finally successful in killing the beast and it dies in a tangle of collapsing infrastructure.

Now, as an ode to the classic American monster movie I'm quite fond of it.

HOWEVER, as an american attempt on the Kaiju genre, let alone Godzilla, it's an abject failure.

Seems like a good time to mention this is happening in theaters on the 14th. ;)

Any idea on the source of that photo?  I see Gene in the back, but not sure if that's Majel sitting in Riker's seat.

I presume this was one of those occasions where foreign dignitaries or other bigwigs visited the set. As Ronald Reagan once paid TNG a visit, you'd think someone would snapped a photo of him sitting on the bridge.

What do you HATE about the EU?

I was looking up the name of the actor who played Owen in the PT on Wookieepedia, and I happened to stumble upon this image:

Yeah, so apparently not only did Vader personally give the order for the stormtroopers on Tatooine to execute Owen and Beru -- an idea which in and of itself is dumb -- but he personally witnessed it happen through hologram.

BULL, MOTHERFUCKING, HORSESHIT!

Suffice it to say, I hate this -- I hate this stupid contrived rectal ulcer A LOT. I hate it so much, I'm adding it to my personal non-canon, and a personal non-canon is something I hadn't even conceived of let all alone had prior to typing this post.

This a prime example of the EU making Vader over the top evil. (He's supposed to blame Owen and Beru for Shimi's death now? And how the hell is Owen making eye contact there?) My impression of Vader in the OT is that's he mostly a cool customer. He doesn't lash out unless somebody screws up carrying out his orders, or mocks the Force. And even Force choking Motti betrays a sick twisted sense of humor.

Yeah, he strangled that rebel at the beginning of the first movie, but that was part of the job.

It's what makes his turning on the Emperor in Jedi so good.

I think they were trying to pay homage to the movie Westworld, which pretty much is the template for every holodeck malfunction episode ever.

Love or hate the episode, this shot of the big D flying off into the sunset at the end is a beauty. (I imagine someone had to plead to get this new shot done instead of using stock footage.) Almost more majestic than the final shot of her in All Good Things.

Carrie must have had a good agent in the 80's. Her character gets injured early on, spends half the movie healing up, and recovers in time to sacrifice herself at the end for no adequately explored reason. And she's only in the metal brassiere for a few scant minutes. Why couldn't she have been the one in the topless swimming scene, dammit!

At least Carrie got a Australian vacation out of this turkey.

Did anybody ever check out the coloring on that dollar store DVD of dubious origin?

I've probably suggested this before, but when Lando announces the Empire has taken over and everyone should split, cut to random scenes of panic and/or looting. The evacuation scene in Spaceballs could work here.

And when this beloved character appears...

Someone off screen should yell "Ice Cream Man!"

Also, I found this when I picked up the latest MST3K volume today.

Carrie Fisher is in the fourth movie of the set.

I'll report back when I've actually watched it. :)

Stumbled onto this alternate 1980 Coca-Cola poster I'd never seen before...

Boris Vallejo's paint work is fantastic and much more fantasy styled than than most posters but the Duel-Lightsaber-wielding Vader looks hilarious to me. Almost like he could be shouting "Yeaaarrggh f**k the Rebels!"

I think it's the small size of the sabers that makes the image look silly. If they were closer in size to the film sabers then it would look much better.

Oh, and Vader's oversized arms/hands probably don't help any, either.

It's called artistic license. If we're going to nitpick posters, Luke never had the muscles depicted on this one anymore than Leia showed that much leg, or had such impressive space knockers in the movie. ;)

I want to see action figures based on this.

I have a Luke action figure that looks like that! Let me see if I can find a pic...

JEDIT: It's the one on the right

He's from back in the nineties, got him when I was a kid. The boots aren't quite right but he's got the muscles.

Oh yeah. I'm not sure what Kenner/Hasbro was thinking with the Galaxy Far Far Away takes steroids look, but I imagine Mark was happy with it. ;)
