Strange Magic - Lucasfilm's New Upcoming Animated Film!
Time

So, I decided to take one for the team and go see this tonight...

...And much to my surprise, I liked it! It took a while for the plot to get rolling, but once it did, I was laughing. There was one character who stole every scene they were in. I'm having difficulty accepting that Lucas came up with a comedy relief character that's actually funny, and cute.

Once you get used to the Moulin Rouge! gimmick of popular songs being used, it actually works.

The animation was intricate in it's detail. Nothing like Pixar or Dreamworks style at all. Several in your face style shots are a dead give away this was probably meant to be shown in 3D, and would have rocked. A pity Disney absolutely had no faith in this at all.

George, you really surprised me!

Since Poita has returned, would preserving this in 3D be possible?

I already have a bid on it.

Yes, it is entirely possible, you scan the print, then split the scan into the left and right views.

You then go through and colour match the left and right streams, and do any cleanup required.

Then it is a matter of stabilising and packing the footage into the 3D format of choice. This will give you something that has the same 3D effect as the cinematic release, except with better colour consistency.

You can then go through and find the areas where the 3D didn't work so well, and start adjusting those to give a better experience.

Oh good! It's an enjoyable Star Wars clone if you've never seen it.

Downright scary all the cool things that have been popping up lately. ;)

I think this thread makes a pretty strong case for most everyone wanting to like TPM.

Of course, most of us did want to like TPM. In the case of Trek, it was not wanting to harm this thing fans had kept alive, and taken years to convince the powers that be there was a market for new material. There was no "franchise" as it's thought of now.

There were fewer outlets to vent one's spleen back in 1979. You had to stay angry enough to write a ranting letter to Starlog or Cinefantastique, and maybe it saw print a few months later, or not. Even if you had a typewriter, you still needed to lick a stamp.

With modern technology, there's no "cooling off" period anymore.

Info & Discussion: Fullscreen Laserdisc / DVD Preservations
Time

As far a full frame Kubrick releases go, the 2001 releases with Digitally Restored and Remastered on the cover are preferable to the 1999 releases. (The covers are virtually identical aside from that addition.) The 99's were rushed out after Kubrick's passing, (and timed to Eyes Wide Shut) and are mostly from older inferior masters.

The 1999 discs often sport the original mono mixes, but the quality is again below par.

The Shining is still easy enough to find in stores. (I still see it for sale at Target.) Not sure about Full Metal Jacket or any of the others.

That article reads like a fan who just saw The Phantom Menace on opening night

Yes, but David Gerrold actually wrote scripts for TOS. Easy to forget the mixed reception TMP actually got at the time.

Unlike TPM, most fans didn't want to come right out and badmouth the film. (At least not to the press camped out to get reactions.) We had waited so long for Trek to live again.

Info: Something that might interest folks here..."ROTJ" Editdroid Laserdisc Footage
Time

There likely would be at least three camps competing for this. The fanedit community, collector's of rare LD's, and people who collect anything remotely connected to Star Wars.

The last group can get a little nutty, if you recall someone likely blew their kids' college fund on a rare Droids figure last year. ;)

Info: Re-mixed audio tracks on video releases
Time

If anyone still cares, the Grease audio preservation was revived over at AMPS. I got my VHS Hi Fi captures into capable hands. And sure enough, just as this is getting synched up, a PAL disc released in the Netherlands with English PCM audio appears on Ebay.

Anybody else besides LeeThorogood have the ability to capture PAL LD's? (Specifically bit perfect audio capture.) He hasn't been on since last November.
