Robert Myer Burnett has pretty much said that CBS isn't very willing to do it because not enough people bought TNG-R. They also didn't do anything to promote it recently and priced the sets way out of most people's price range.

Not having theatrical screenings of All Good Things was a dumb move. That was the one I really wanted to see on the big screen. The theater I went to see Best Of Both Worlds at was pretty packed with fans.

I hope that's true. I myself recall hearing that Digital Domain (the studio that did CGI for DS9, Voyager, and Insurrection) trashed all its old rendering files when the studio went through bankruptcy.

I'd much rather prefer that you be right and I wrong on this.

The version I've heard is an employee kept backups of the files. Where the truth lies is anyone's guess.

I don't think anyone at Paramount/CBS have said it isn't going to happen. It will probably boil down to how much it costs vs. how much they think they can recoup by selling both shows to tv again, and Blu Ray sales. The 50th anniversary will create demand for product besides a new feature film.

DS9 and Voyager used more CGI than TNG ever did, but I've heard elsewhere the files were saved, and could be re-rendered in HD.

^Nope!  They were mostly odd, peripheral stories - like expansions on Anakin's history with podracing or a journal chronicling the movie from the POV of Padme.  Really silly, inoffensive stuff.

The exception being Jedi Apprentice, which told stories of Obi-Wan training under Qui-Gon.  I just gave those off to goodwill but I recall them holding up into adulthood.  Anything that makes Liam Neeson's character interesting is good by me to this day.

Damn, I was hoping for a Watto story at least. Blowing all his money on podracing, and doing spice off a slave girl's tummy probably isn't too wholesome a subject though. ;)

The aborted rock monster, though, was perhaps best left on the cutting room floor.

If only because it would have looked cheesy as heck.

Ten years later, though, the advent of CGI let Galaxy Quest pull it off.

There's so little footage of it, it's kind of hard to tell. It's unfortunate Paramount has showed zero interest in letting Shatner create a director's cut.

I do think this part is important

from novels for adults and teens to storybooks and stickerbooks for younger kids

Agreed.  In the grand scheme, this isn't going to matter much if it's about as many possible tie-ins as they can get.  I don't think I need to remind you all how many kids' books came out related to TPM that are technically canon, but have long been forgotten.

I must have mentally tuned out the TPM merchandising onslaught at some point, because I have no memory of seeing the kid's books. Did they sugarcoat things like Qui Gon's death or Maul doing the split? ;)

It's the one Shatner ripped off when he made Star Trek V only the TV version is somehow worse and it feels longer.

It's called The way to Eden.

I always thought The Final Frontier lifted off Beyond The Farthest Star myself. Both have a malevolent energy being that want to use the Enterprise as it's "body" to escape it's prison.

If you know anything about TFF's troubled history, the studio meddled with it, lest anyone be offended by musings on Gods and Devils, which was familiar territory for Trek.

There are no singing space hippies in TFF.

It's an early episode, there is less leering later on, except for space vixens. And it's not like there isn't any leering in TNG. A female crew member is checking out Riker's caboose in the pilot! ;)

Charlie X is supposed to be creepy!

And you should be watching production order, not broadcast order. NBC was the only one who thought showing The Man Trap first was a good idea.

I only ever get the Filet O' Fish and an apple pie to go these days.

Sounds like it's time to impeach Mayor McCheese though. That bastard has run unopposed for decades, and he hired his brother to run the police dept. You don't want to get pulled over in McDonaldland, trust me. And heaven help you if they find a Whopper in your glove compartment!

What was the logic of the VCR/Blu-ray combo?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-VHS

I actually have a Mitsubishi deck I got brand new pretty cheap on Ebay, but it doesn't have the logo indicating compatibility with D-Theater movies. I think one other board member has a deck, as they are pretty useful for regular VHS and S-VHS tapes. As they were high end machines, they were better made than most of the cheapo VCR's of the late 90's and early 2000's.

Do thrift stores still accept VHS tapes these days?

D-VHS bombed as a format even harder than HD DVD did. Your average consumer has probably never even heard of it. I never even saw them in stores outside one small display at Sears. It certainly wasn't aggressively marketed.

The studios don't want people recording movies in HD anyway. Note there are no standalone Blu Ray recorders on the market in the U.S., while they have been around in Japan for quite some time.
