The SW Saga of 1975: ATM's Take

I was watching the un-aired pilot for Lost in Space last night and I was struck by how the design of the thing and the superb (for their day) production values reminded me of some of the design drawings for the first two films. It also reminded me of some the Archie Goodwin strips.

The show in general may have had some sort of influence maybe after the first film had been shot.

Jonathan Harris and Anthony Daniels do sound similar which might have influenced Lucas to drop the oily car salesman voice he was going to dub over the footage and it's not that huge a leap from a chimp with big ears to Yoda.

One of the uncredited production designers on Forbidden Planet, also worked on LIS.

So Robby and B-9 essentially have the same father. The robot's role on show as comedy relief, having human mannerisms, and often helping saving the day certainly is a forerunner to that of Artoo and Threepio.

It was the success of Star Wars that actually got talk of a LIS reunion movie going. (Billy Mumy even penned a script.) But the rights to the show were once as tangled as the Batman series was, and producer Irwin Allen never really got on board.

Jonathan Harris did lend his voice to a robotic character on the original Battlestar Galactica.

Yikes! Luke's X Wing looks like it's been sitting on Dagobah for the past 30 years!

It was painfully obvious Vader's TIE fighter suffered some damage between when it was shown on the Definitive Collection LD set in 1993, and it's appearance on the Blu Ray extras. Maybe they should stop touring the models if they are getting this fragile?

They seem to have a healthy sense of humor. In the one I saw, Vader is chased around by screaming fangirls after the Rebels show them a picture of Hayden's Anakin.

Speaking of animated Star Wars, the "rights and clearances" credit on TCW and Rebels confuses me. What on earth has to be cleared to use in a Star Wars show? It's not like they use top 40 songs or anything.

@SilverWook - Was Darby cropped to widescreen or was there actually more image?

This is the first I've heard of the dubbed soundtrack.  Was it used on the DVD?

Edit: Wikipedia says the 'easier to understand' dub was used for DVD releases.  I'm thinking the TV version is some fluke.

From what was said over at the HTF, this soundtrack hasn't seen the light of day for a while.

I only get TCM's standard definition feed, and it is frequently screwed up by whatever automation they use to distinguish between 16:9 and 4:3 video. (Gone With The Wind aired windowboxed recently.) It gets tripped up by movies with less wide ratios for some reason. Darby was unfortunately cropped for me. :(

There is a remastered LD with digital audio out there, in case Disney cocks things up again. ;)

TCM ran a widescreen version of Darby O' Gill and The Little People last weekend. This is a film Disney previously insisted was shown full frame in theaters in the late 50's. (And has been full frame in every home video incarnation.) This is utter blarney of course. ;)

Several people picked up on the fact this airing had a redubbed soundtrack that tones down the thicker Irish accents. This alternate dub is also vintage. Here's hoping the eventual Blu Ray keeps the original mix as an option at the very least.

I wasn't sure Blu-rays could get scratched. I imagine that the peanut butter thing would still work to fill in the gap. Couldn't make it worse.

I'm lucky enough to have a functioning video rental store in my town with a disc resurfacer. As far as I can tell, they don't use different machines for Blu's, so you should be fine with whatever remedy you go with.

They are more scratch resistant than DVD's, but not impervious to poor handling. It was a used rental disc I got dirt cheap. With all the nasty things I used to see stuck to VHS rentals, I can only imagine what some people do to rental discs.

The video breaks up for a couple seconds about half an hour in. A different player might even blissfully ignore it.

Guess I better buy some peanut butter?
