The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

And now a message from Tv’s Frink.

I apologize for my overreaction and the distraction/annoyance it caused everyone, including Dre, the moderators, Jay, and everyone else just trying to read and post in a thread about a Star Wars movie.

I was also going to ask Dre to reconsider his announcement that he’s leaving the forum, as he’s a valued member of the community, but I see he’s already posting again. I’m glad to see it.

Yeah, we need some OT merchandising after all these years. I don’t even have a moderator hat. 😉

Has anyone checked out the Hallmark ornaments this year? Saw the Death Star one the other day, and was sorely tempted to buy it. Who wouldn’t want a Imperial battle station blowing up the other ornaments on their Christmas tree?

As Jay pays for this forum out of his own pocket, (we haven’t even had advertising in years) he doesn’t owe you guys a darn thing.

I didn’t say that. I meant he runs a Star Wars forum and therefore it would behoove him to watch a Star Wars film before the site inevitably spoils it for him.

Those pesky things like jobs and family do get in the way.

All I’m saying is that I have seen the movie so I ought to be made temporary admin for the time being and I definitely won’t do anything crazy like ban all the mods and Jay in the meantime and enact rules against making posts without a mandatory picture of a cat doing something funny in every post.

That’s not a crazy idea. Like a sheriff appointing temporary deputies. Maybe something we can test out with the Han Solo movie next year?

Jay can’t be banned. I have tried, as part of testing the forum software of course. 😛

Jay has said more bans are likely as he reviews the thread. And he hasn’t even seen the movie yet so he’s spoiling himself in the process.

He should watch it first then. This is his site, so he should have already watched it.

Contrary to popular belief, we have lives. They often take a backseat to the needs of this site too much already. I bought tickets for an entire group last week so I could catch a Thursday night screening, but that was out of a desire not to get the movie spoiled for me like last time.
Things got more complex this time out, with at least one member here apparently catching an early press screening days before the premiere and posting a detailed review about it.

As Jay pays for this forum out of his own pocket, (we haven’t even had advertising in years) he doesn’t owe you guys a darn thing.

Back on topic : Mark Hamill’s reaction after the premiere https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwaCwFFs7qA

So did anyone else actually watch this? Skip to 1:24 for the actual video.

I get the feeling that Mark didn’t know he was being killed off until he watched it actually happen and on top of what he already thought about Luke’s character in this movie (he really didn’t like it), he looks absolutely floored as to what Rian Johnson has done to his character. He also looks ready to kill RJ at the end as RJ smirks to the press…

I feel so bad for Hamill.

.Val

Yes, you can also watch the full press conference as well as another video from someone in the crowd that shows more of Mark’s face. He looks like that pretty much the whole press conference. He seems better when he speaks, but then goes back to that shocked look. Definitely appears like something is wrong with him, but we can only speculate as to the reason. Could be nothing or just nothing to do with the movie. We’ll never know.

Let’s not speculate on Mark’s health around here until there’s actually something concrete to go on? Thanks!

Someone expressed their opinion and you seem to feel the need to prove them wrong. Why?

Cartoony humor is different from subtle, smart humor. Star Wars had subtle humor, not in-your-face slapstick.

You certainly may disagree, but that doesn’t undermine or lessen those of us who share this opinion.

I’m simply reminding that certain things TLJ is being pilloried for are not new in Star Wars.

And there was plenty of unsubtle humor in ROTJ. Nothing in TLJ rises to the level of Chewbacca swinging from a vine yelling like Tarzan. A joke Lucas even repeated in Revenge Of The Sith.

I was personally only referring to the humor in A New Hope, which was subtle and done sparingly. ROTJ was corny and marked “the beginning of the end” for Star Wars being taken seriously.

The Tarzan yells fall under the category I described in my larger post about my disappointment with The Last Jedi. Because it references something from planet earth, which they couldn’t possibly know anything about since all of this takes place “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away”.

This reminds me of a time in the late 80s or early 90s that I decided to try reading a Star Wars spin-off novel. I think it was a Timothy Zahn, but not sure. It said that Luke was drinking “hot chocolate”. I put the book down and never picked it up again. No. This is a different universe. They don’t have chocolate. Even if they had something that was exactly like chocolate, they wouldn’t call it chocolate. Any earth references completely ruin the story.

Obi Wan mentions ducks in the original SW novel. 😉

If he was that unhappy he could have threatened to walk if changes weren’t made. It’s not like they could replace him.

And that’s hardly blasting the director.

He was hired to do a job, and so he did that job to the best of his abilities, and to his credit it’s an amazing performance. He doesn’t have to like it though, as he clearly doesn’t. It’s RJ’s vision for the character and he respects that, but he doesn’t feel that character is Luke Skywalker.

And lest we forget, Harrison Ford had issues with George over not killing Han off in ROTJ.

One of the issues I have with the new movies is the constant over-explanation of everything. Star Wars has never been subtle, but did we really need to see people with monocles and tuxedos on understand that these were rich people?

TLJ was a movie-equivalent of a Thomas Kinkade painting.

It’s an exclusive casino. What are they supposed to wear? Even Vegas has places they won’t let you in without a suit.

You never see anybody in street clothes in a casino in a 007 movie. 😉

I could almost guarantee that if TLJ’s story beats exactly matched expectations of what people were speculating, many people would have accused the film of being predictable and boring.

I would have settled for a competently told story, and one that spent less time on pointless sub-plots, useless characters, & cartoony gags, and more focus on the critical themes surrounding our hero’s struggles and growth as she takes the next step of her journey.

Because there never were any cartoony gags in the OOT.

Nope, not even close to the extent of the gags that were placed throughout TLJ. The only thing in the OOT that feels like a “gag” is the Tarzan yell in ROTJ, which fortunately is brief and not in-your-face, like the TLJ stuff.

Anyway, the gags are just one aspect of what’s wrong with the movie.

Forgetting Wicket hitting himself in the head with his own sling?

Cartoon physics when Paploo steals the speeder bike?

The slapstick only got worse in the SE’s. The droid in Mos Eisely hitting the other droid for example. Or the Jawas falling off the Ronto.

Watching TFA again, some lines about Snoke sound ridiculous. Especially Leia talking about Snoke turning Ben.

We can still presume that Luke lied to Leia about that when he left everything behind ?

But Snoke did turn Ben. He had already seduced Ben before Luke’s moment of weakness.

Some people seem to forget that little detail. It’s not like Kylo decided to go evil after waking up to see Uncle Luke standing there. The Jedi Knight School was doomed either way.
