The Official Lucasfilm Response

I wanted you to know how much we appreciate the passion and enthusiasm you have for Star Wars, and thank you for sharing your concerns about our upcoming DVD release.

The DVDs being released in September will contain two versions of Star Wars: Episodes IV, V and VI – the Special Editions (which represent George’s vision of the movies) and the first versions, which will be included as bonus material. We hoped that releasing those “original” movies on a bonus disc would be a way to have some additional fun with the debut of the movies as individual DVDs. We certainly did not want it to become a source of concern or frustration for any of our fans.

As you may know, an enormous amount of effort was put into digitally restoring the negatives for the Special Editions. In one scene alone, nearly 1 million pieces of dirt had to be removed, and the Special Editions were created through a frame-by-frame digital restoration. The negatives of the movies were permanently altered for the creation of the Special Editions, and existing prints of the first versions are in poor condition.

So many fans have requested the original movies, we wanted to find a way to bring them to you. But since these movies do not represent George's artistic vision, we could not put the extraordinary time and resources into this project as we did with the Special Editions. The 1993 Laserdisc masters represented the best source for providing the original versions as DVD bonus material. Although these are non-anamorphic versions, they do preserve the original widescreen composition of the movies.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans – now or in the future – to restore the earlier versions.

We hope you will understand our decision and, again, want to let you know how much we appreciate your interest and enthusiasm.

Sincerely,
Lynne Hale

hahaha well i saw that one coming, i do beleive that in the 'make your voices heard (again)' thread i said everything that she said in there letter, last week. hahaha i find that very funny, and people said i gave them too much credit.

like i said b4 alot of work was done into restoring the film to even get the faces set ready, do you really think they are going to redo all that for one feature when they already have it sitting right beside them. they wont, know one would. just forget its starwars and think to your self would you redo the whole thing. its like saying oh i wrote a 1000 page book and i found some grammer errors, so now i am going to re-write the entire book from scratch jsut to please a few people.

Grievous Questions... and more!
Time
first no grievous was nto even force sensitive enough to become a jedi, let alone be more powerful the yoda and anakin. he was more like a thrawn character. who was super brillent. it was actually sidous who found him, put him in the hands of one of the seperatists, who then arranged for a crash that almost killed him, and destroyed his body. they did all this so that the coudl get into his mind and turn him into a crasy cold hearted general. the reason he was able to kill jedi is cause his body was designed to make movements like jedi, and dooku who according to the PT novels was one of the best sword masters in the history of the jedi. if you can imagine how much a car junky knows about cars well, dooku was the same with with saber fighting. anyway thats why grievous was able to kill jedi, cause he was designed with super strength agility, and trained to use his body, rather then programed.

as for the trageaty of Darth Vader, man they really flesh out what turned anakin, and i dont know how they could have put that in the movie without a narrorator.

hey do you think it would have been cool if the whole PT had been told as a tale from the ghosts to luke after the OT. to have everything narrorated by yoda, obiwan and anakin, and have eash complement eachother as they told the story. i wonder if that could still be done really easily, or if that could be made in a fan edit. it would take ALOT of work involving finding a voice actor and a makeing a good script

how do we know that jesus really said these things. that he spoke to god and everything, history always get opinionated along the way. martan luther king once said 'i have a dream' that dream lead to the civil rights movement and alot of freedoms for african americans. in 2000 years do you think would be so difficult to change the line from 'i have a dream', to 'i have a dream from god'. the results from his actions were certainly miraculous, complete freedom for millions in the span of 40 years. he was also shot and died. is it so hard to think that 2000 years go his tragedy couldnt also be interpeted as him scarificing himself for his people.

i dont quite agree with you there warbler. first of all, islam doesnt proclaim mohammed to be a son of god, they dont deny that he was a man, nor do they deny that he was married so... a movie couldnt actually be made about mohammed in the same way the da vinci code was made about jesus. second i dont agree cause the onyl reason a movie like that would be frowned upon if it could be made would be, because of th current political state with islamic people.

you know i was jsut looking over all of it, and it really doesnt make sense why lucas is do this, i wonder if this is just a bait and he plans to restore the OOT in the 30th anniversary editions anyway, he is just doing this to see how many fans will bite. hehehe that would be a very funny joke to play on the fans.

oh btw for those of you that dont know me well. I LOVE playing devils advocate. and as for the icecream anology think it over carefully and you see that it fits, and if you dont understand even afterwards. well kids never understand that they are being foolish, when they are foolish .

Help with a logic puzzle
Time
you shouldnt worry about averages cause the bottem line is that you get one chance not 10 or 20, so the question is whether you want to gamble or not and that is up to you. and so it doesnt matter which is the right logic its personal preference. get it.

the whole question changes when you have more then one trial because that is when averages start to count and so by switch every time you wil average out with more money. i beleive.

yes i know. hey you guys can correct me if i am wrong this is jsut my take on the whole contriversy.

at the begining of the book dan brown has a little forward that says all historical documentation in this book is fact. People hate this cause they beleive that brown is claiming that the story of mary mandeline is fact. however my take on it is that brown took a bunch of FACTS from history, lots of things that didnt really have much to do with eachother and fit them together to create a fictious story. i know that he did this in angels and demons with the 4 monuments and what not, but did he do it in the da vinci code as well. i.e. are alot of the tib bit facts actually facts, like the pengan symbolism and the council and what not.

Yes I understand now what you are getting at and I agree. But I also feel that if he's gonna release it on DVD to stop us whining he may as well do it properly. I don't want it cleaned up or fixed in any way - I just want the best possib;le transfer he and his colleagues are capable of. This is Star Wars for god's sake - treat it with some respect.

I personally am not that bothered about the anamorphic debate - I just want Star Wars preserved on DVD so I can watch it over and over without worrying about my VHS degrading and snapping, but the fact that he seems to be pulling this shit on purpose to rub shit in our faces irritated me enough to write to the guy. He's clearly insane.

When bands release their old albums on CD, they don't sound all crackly and shit like a vinyl, they sound like a CD. And that's because the original recording, the band's original performance, sounded that way, and the crappy medium of vinyl altered that sound to something less than it was. By cleaning up the masters and laying them onto a CD, we get a better, clearer sound. It's the same in this case - 35mm is incredibly clear and beautiful to watch - and DVD can go some way towards replicating that (further than VHS or Laserdisc anyway). The technology exists to allow us to watch one of the greatest, most seminal movies of all time in a good, clear way, so why not let us? It's just spiteful and sad.

thats true but this probably is the best he has, with the money he wants to put into it. to get what you guys want would probably require him to go back to the original film, and then just like he did in 93. Remaster the whole thing, along with the THX(or what ever it is) sound and everything. it is very likely that this is the best version of the OOT that is easily at his disposal, and since he is doing it as a favour to the dieheart fans he doesnt want to put all the money into redoing everything. i think that if he does everything you suggest he would just release it in its own DVD. but he doesnt want to do that cause i think somewhere in GL mind he thinks that if he spends all that money on redoing everything from scratch he will sell at a lose. so many people out there have the dvds already from last year.i dont think he expects LOTS of people to buy these just cause the OOT is on them, and that is why you have high cost for them in the first place.

Make your voices heard! (again) - re the 2006 GOUT DVD being in letterbox format

re-read it hahaha i wrote something different now. as for the necklace idea. what i am talking about someone saying ok we need to preserve this artifact, and then deciding that they are going to make a prefect replica that fixes errors using something that lasts longer and proclaim that as the artifact. thats essentually what people want GL to do with the OOT, they want him to refinish the whole thing correct errors and everything and then give it to them, in the name of preserveing cinimatic history. and what i am saying is that the request they make is contradictory. if he makes all the changes they want they are infact not preserving history, they are changing it into something thats 'better' and claiming that to be the historical product. see what i am getting at. in both cases the original thing has a flaw with SW its the fusyness or lines or lightsaber falts. in the necklace the material wasnt ideal for long time preservation. in both cases things are getting changes in the name of preservation when infact you are not preserving it when you make those changes.

i hate to say but thats your fault for buying them. maybe if you had held out for awhile like me you wouldnt have that problem.

and the kid analogy works fine dont try to nit pick it i am not talking about money, i am am refering to the idea that you got what you wanted and you want more just as the kid go his icecream and now wants a different flavour.

and as for preserveing something again dont take the example too literally, cause its the idea i am talking about.and your example points directly at that, they are making a 3d image of the book to preserve the content of the book, but they are still infact keepin the book and all its flaws together, there is only one copy of it and so it remains in a chamber where it can be preserved, they are not however taking the book re-writing everything in it. even in the 3D images the flaws are still there, thats why they are making the 3D image rather then a 2D image, to preserve everything.

if thats how you feel then thats how you feel. i suppose its the difference between a glass half full and a glass half empty. you yourself said its a release of the same dvd with different extra content. its not a very far leap to assume that its just a release of extra content. that content is something you guys have wanted for a very long time, and that content is a whole movie. its your choice if you want to be satisfied with what you got or if you want more. And if you want more, well the story of the little kid comes to mind. just the way i see it, and you cant deny that there are similarities. price shouldnt really matter if you are as devoted to the OOT as most of the fans are. to go and make a edit of it, shows just how devoted you are. but dvds are always expensive, so many new releases are around $40 if you go to the store the day its released. and like i said above what you get is more then likely all he has. without spending shit loads of money on makeing it again fron scratch.

Make your voices heard! (again) - re the 2006 GOUT DVD being in letterbox format

its more in the sense that, you guys are already very lucky that he is releaseing them in the first place. Lucus didnt want to but you guys swayed his opinion and changed his mind. in my mind seems to me that he doesnt want to put any more money into fixing something that he only releasing as a favour to the fans. its possible that he did not save a copy of the OOT that was in the SE quality but without the SE scenes. Now the entire basis of releasing the movie is to preserve history, or at least thats what i can extract from jays letter to GL. if you want to preserve history you cant just pick and choose what, you have to include everything, include all the little flaws, along with all the greatness. if i have a 200 hundred year olf book, that i want to keep as part of history, do i take it and just photocopy all the pages and make a new book with photocopied pages so that the book doesnt fall apart, so that i dnt have to worry about the old paper anymore, no i dont, i try my best to keep it good condition by not touching it too much and isolating it i.e. by put it in conditions where it will stay preserved for longer. Now thats what lucas has done for you. he has take the OOT and placed it on a DVD so it wont ruin more over time. i know it sucks that its going to be 4:3 rather then widescreen but so what, logically there is no reason lucas would not release the widescreen if he had it. so whining about it wont do anything.

Again i wouldnt as much have this opinion if it wasnt 2 days after the announcement of the release that fans started bitching that it wasnt good enough. My entire point is that you guys got what you wanted, the OOT on DVD and you still want more. the same way if a kid with his mom at the mall whines that he wants icecream for 2 hrs, then finally his mom gives in and they go to the icecream store and they dont have the flavor he wants so he whines more.

I know you guys are having quams about the widescreen issue. but the bottem line is, lucas is release the OOT on DVD, i think he knows that widescreen is the prefered media. given that knowledge and that he is not an idiot. there are to things that could have happened either A. he doesnt have it, cause if he did he would release it, or B. he doesnt care about the fans. it cant be B because if he did he wouldnt even do as much as he is doing now. therefore it must be A. and he doesnt want to spend the money to re-render the movies from film to computer then spend millions to refinish the whole thing, just the way fans want him to.

vigo, umm i beleive my post count is about 9000 more then you, and that i have been here from the beginning of this site. i think i am pretty well informed about this issue thank you very much.
