"BUT ANAMORPHIC ENHANCEMENT ALTERS THE MOVIES!!!"
Time

It kinda doesn't. Given an anamorphic and a non-anamorphic scan of the same film, the anamorphic one will be closer to the original. Why? Its higher resolution can capture more detail. The process of digitization and conversion to 480p 4:2:0 MPEG-2 will inevitably lose some detail from the film source, but non-anamorphic will lose more.

Neither process, however, affects the shape of the frame or the subjects therein. These are the "alterations" that most people are concerned about. Differences between the film master and the digital version are referred to as artifacts, and can occur with either anamorphic or non-anamorphic content. To say that one encoding method or the other "alters" a movie is a red herring.

(Finally, as has been pointed out already, the films were shot and projected anamorphically. Someone had to alter your movies at the telecine stage to make them fit within that 4:3 frame without distortion. This doesn't really matter, it's just interesting.)

Now I want you to say, "Thank you for educating me, Scruffy. I will not disappoint you again." Once that is done, go, and sin no more.

What is GOUT?
Time
But OUT and OOT are not synonymous. OOT is the Original Original Trilogy, the sort of platonic ideal of the Star Wars Trilogy. It's been used for a long time to describe the original Star Wars Trilogy. OUT is Original Unaltered Trilogy, a new marketing term used to describe the 2006 DVD release of the Star Wars Trilogy. Since it's not the original unaltered trilogy, using that acronym represents a sort of intellectual buy-in to a lie. Prefixing it with the G acknowledges this and places the blame for the dissonance where it rightly lies.

Best of both worlds, they could've generated the subtitles on the frame. That way, you get the original, unaltered theatrical experience, and those fluent in Rodian can turn them off.

Wedge and Rogue Squadron (in the EU)
Time
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Rogue_Squadron

Rogue Flight was nearly destroyed at Hoth, and Wedge took charge of the remnants while Luke was off doing Jedi things. It was reformed as Rogue Squadron under Luke during the year after Hoth, though Wedge was frequently in charge. That was dissolved during Endor and the remaining pilots grouped into Red Squadron. It was reconsolidated during the Truce at Bakura thing, with Luke as Rogue Leader (though I only remember him flying a TIE in TaB). After that, a permanent Rogue Squadron was formed under Wedge. That's the one that Michael Stackpole adopted.

I think GOUT came from the preservation board. Other acceptable but non-official acronyms include

LOUT -- Lucas's Original Unaltered Trilogy
FLOUT -- F***in' Lucas's Original Unaltered Trilogy

BOUT -- Basic Original Unaltered Trilogy
O^2UT -- Official Original Unaltered Trilogy
ROUT -- Released Original Unaltered Trilogy
TROUT -- The Released Original Unaltered Trilogy
NU OUT -- Not Unaltered Original Unaltered Trilogy
BUG OUT -- Barely Understanding George's Original Unaltered Trilogy
ROCK OUT -- Really Obsolete CAV Kind Of Unaltered Trilogy
COCK OUT -- Ceaselessly Obliterated Classic Killed Original Unaltered Trilogy
KNOCK OUT -- Kind News, Old Classic Kitsch Out for Undiscriminators, a Treasure

Anyone else got any ideas? I'm all out.

The Trekkies Are Unbelievable
Time
On TrekBBS, they're complaining that the new effects team didn't change enough in the new version of Balance of Terror. CBS makes a great big deal about how they're staying absolutely faithful to the original show, just making new visual effects since the old effects would look awful in HD ... and now the fans are revolting. The ship isn't dynamic enough, there are no NextGen-style warp stars, they didn't "fix" the "error" with the phasers, not enough new shots of the model, blah blah blah. Why don't we give them our rontos and our giggling droids and our honking dewbacks and Vader's shuttle and Hayden so we can have Star Wars and they can have the CGI-fest they seem to want?

Hopefully, this is just a vocal minority of fans. But maybe it's not. Maybe only those of us who have seen the face of Hayden know the danger of CGI editing. The path to the Dark Side.

But could you be tempted to use a patching utility to put out binary blobs we could use to "fix" the defective official DVDs? Or would that be tantamount to releasing the whole thing?

OOT on HD DVD
Time
You can bet your ass it's not anamorphic, since BR and HD DVD natively support 1920 x 1080. But I think that was already mentioned. And that it'll be letterboxed, since 1920/1080 != 16/9. (Unless HD DVD/BR support different resolutions than Wikipedia suggests.)

As for Lucas being a "laughingstock," by rights he should be a laughingstock now, but we've all seen the Amazon sales ranking for the gout.

German ANH DVD OOT audio track: Entire part of dialogue missing in Chapter 13
Time
I'm sure it's a deliberate creative decision which didn't alter the original film. Maybe they thought those lines wouldn't play to a German-speaking audience for some reason, or the original version never had those lines and you've just gotten used to George Lucas's preferred version of 2004 which does. In any case, Star Wars has never looked this good, and these are just bonus features.

(The sarcasm is strong in this one.)

Jump up my butt. Our Army -- and I'll throw a bone to the Marines, the Squids, and the Zoomies -- is the best trained and equipped in the world. No one "let" bin Laden escape; he used a well-established military and paramilitary along with prepared positions and civilian allies to escape. Capturing people like him isn't like serving a warrant on your slovenly wife-beating father; if it were that easy, maybe your buddy Clinton would've done it instead of desultory standoff strikes.

With regards to body armor, you go to war with the Army you have, not the Army you want. There will always be another wonderful new Miracle Technology that we should've waited for besides executing a mission; that's the nature of technology, it's always advancing. If it weren't the IBA and the uparmored HMMWVs, it would've been the ACU, or the ACH, the XM8, the 6.8mm Remington, and on and on ... we could've been sitting here in 2008 arguing about how the last year in Iraq was a failure because the BBs weren't taken out of mothballs or the F-35s' avionics weren't debugged.

And if you do want to bitch and moan about armor, consider the wisdom of using infantry in a daytime urban raid without an armor cordon. I think there was a movie about that a few years back.

With regards to the Geneva Conventions, Law of War training takes place at all echelons, starting with Initial Entry Training. A few junior enlisted and NCOs decided to break those rules, and they've been punished. The only "horror" was the propaganda victory this handful of criminals handed to Baathist and Salafist terrorists. (And maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I'm not sure how to determine that someone is hors de combat if they were never legal combatants and commit violence against their jailers. I'm sure I could find it on paper if I looked hard enough.)

You know, I take that back. The multiple Al Qaeda attacks on Abu Ghraib that killed many prisoners were the real horrors there, clearly in violation of the Law of War. And the countless Iraqis killed by the Baathist government. But you don't see hundreds of J school grads waxing morose about that. White people sexually harassing brown people sells more papers than brown people killing brown people. They're expected to do it, I guess.

You are demonstrably wrong about a number of other things, including the criminal butchering of our language ("ect," indeed!), but questioning the competence of the Army earns you a lecture and derision. Repost whatever you want from Move On, Truth Out, Al Jazeera, Democrat Underground, I don't care ... but stand by for corrections.

Why do people think Han changed if/when he Greedo shot first?
Time
If that was Lucas's intention, he did a pretty bad job of communicating it. The scene makes it clear that Greedo intends to take Han back to Jabba, who will kill Han, then take his ship.

Greedo: You can tell that to Jabba. He may only take your ship.
Han: Over my dead body.
Greedo: That's the idea.

Greedo refers to bounty hunters, not hitmen, pursuing Solo; most secondary sources suggest that Greedo is a bounty hunter as well. Return of the Jedi reinforces the idea that Jabba employs bounty hunters to bring him his enemies alive ... he enjoys making artwork out of them, feeding them to his pets, etc. Han has a deathmark on his head, but the O-OT shows us that he was to be delivered alive to Jabba.

Lucas's original intention may have been otherwise, but what he realized is superior in terms of character arc and believability. He diminished both when he failed to recognize the results of a happy accident (or his editors).

We don't know anything about him "helping" Chewie, and he only "helps" Luke and Obi-wan because they offer him seventeen thousand credits, got him stuck in an Imperial space station, and introduced him to a rich princess. He doesn't do anything altruistic until after he gets his reward and leaves. Even that act can be seen as self-serving; he's had run-ins with the Imperial fleet, and blowing up one of their space stations could've been his revenge.

Info: 2006 GOUT DVD using 'Faces' PCM Sound?
Time

(emphasis mine)

From Wikipedia:
In countries using the PAL system standard DVD-Video releases must contain at least one audio track using the PCM, MP2, or AC-3 format, and all standard PAL players must support all three of these formats. A similar standard exists in countries using the NTSC system, though with no requirement mandating the use or support for the MP2 format.

From DVDDemystified:
Dolby Digital or PCM audio is required on 525/60 (NTSC) discs[.]

Actually, if Mother Earth swallowed them up now, the rights to the Trilogy would pass on to someone else. Maybe someone more inclined towards servicing customers. Now, lest the admin get in here and jump on me for George-hating, I'm not suggesting the Earth swallow up George Lucas. I'm just thinking about what would happen if she did. And I've gotta admit, it would be advantageous for us.
