Nice handling of the Jedi deaths. Cutting away makes it seem like they were really going at it. (Love the Wilhelm, too! )
Here's a thought I've had for a while, though it may take a lot of work: Would it be possible to remove the three Jedi red-shirts from the frame all-together? Just paint 'em out and make the scene Mace "Jedi Badass" Windu one on one with Palpatine. It would certainly make Mace look arrogant going it alone to take down Sidious, but in the end foolish. It also puts a nice stamp on the Jedi's overall fall.
...and of course, Chewbacca's medal was "presented at an earlier ceremony held at the Grand Ballroom of the Ramada Inn."
I attempted to remove shadows a while ago but i gave up because this was so difficult to do. shadows cast on walls were easy to remove but when they are cast on clothing and moving objects it is a lot more difficult to do so i dropped doing it. I will leave this for someone else to fix in their edit.
Oh you now this will just eat at you until you decide to just fix it yourself. But seriously, no biggie on this one, though it does look very nice with the shadow painted out.
Shadows not withstanding, are you adding in the ambient glow from the sabers onto the people/immediate vicinity of the blades?
I figure you're doing this already anyway, but wanted to double check...
It appears that your main source material is the PAL DVD release. Please make sure that any material that isn't already sourced as PAL (additional music, dialog, sound effects) are correctly pitched up (~4.2% as you know) for your PAL release. This will ensure that the NTSC release will sound exactly like it should once you encode that version. A lot of people here in NTSC-land don't notice much difference from the the PAL speedup, but those like myself hear a huge difference. And it may sound especially odd if some of the additional music gets pitched down on the NTSC encode if not properly adjusted the first time around.
Again, you've probably already taken this into consideration, but I thought I'd throw in my own 2 cents.
I just watched AOTC with the Rifftrax audio commentary posted at the rifftrax site. Funny stuff...and it reminds me of how much the theatrical version sucks, so I can't wait to see this version!
One thing audio related that jumped out at me (again) was 3PO's referral to Anakin as "Master Annie" on two different occasions. He calls him "Master Anakin" in TPM, and for some reason forgets all his "protocol" programming and calls his maker by a nickname in the sequel.
Any plans on changing his lines for this edit? In the greater scheme of things, it seems like a fairly easy fix since we have dialog of 3PO saying "Anakin" from the first flick.
Just something that bugs the hell out of me and wanted to see if this was on the list.
Thanks for the reply. I'm trying to whip up some custom DVD covers and wanted to use the same font for a portion of it. I guess the search continues...
edit: News Gothic BT works just fine. Not exactly correct, but close enough for me. Now back to our regularly scheduled topic...
No sooner did I make my last post, the file started to download again. It's finished now and it looks like there are a total of 13 seeders right now. That should get the ball rolling a little faster. For a long time there, though, I wasn't downloading anything from DE's seed. It was coming from everyone else.
DE, I know you tried it and then scrapped the idea, but then it sounded like you were going to give it another go. Did you color correct the entire film this time around, or is the contrast/brightness still around the same levels as the DVD release?
Going to give it a spin tonight and enjoy this thoroughly!
Thanks for all the hard work on this excellent project!
Yeah, I looked into doing this last year and it was too tedious (rip/avi encode/virtual dub mod/re-encode/dvd author). I just thought that maybe by now someone would have come up with an all in one program that could do the job pretty well with fewer steps.
I couldn't agree more. I believe the 'stated' original intent of the 97 SE's was to finally present the movies the way he originally intended them. Apparently, complete with inconsistent lightsaber effects, matte boxes, continuity errors, incorrect Death Star schematics, etc.
Thus, the reason I love the DE version. Everything I loved about the original theatrical versions, with all the little effects glitches and errors fixed the correct way, without detracting from the story. I also look forward to an ultimate HD version eventually...right DE?
A quick question for the Darth:
I'm looking at converting a PAL DVD to NTSC DVD. Is there a quick and dirty way to do it? Perhaps a program that takes a DVD rip and does an automatic encode to the opposite standard. This may be wishful thinking, but I can hope. I actually have other NTSC discs that were sourced from PAL materials and incorrectly encoded as to keep the speed-up, but be compliant for NTSC equipment. If I can just get the ~4% slowdown easily, I'd be very happy...
Excellent! Thanks for the covers. They will look very nice on my shelf. And in 2015 when the DE version of ROTJ is finished , the set will be complete!
