Hey all. I’ve got a quick question - has anyone confirmed if the 01 distrib version of GBU/BBC that came out in Dec 2013 - this one - is the same master as the 2009/2012 Mondo release - this one? I put in an order for it on Amazon Italy yesterday. It hasn’t shipped yet so I’m wondering if I should cancel it and order the Mondo 2012 release instead. I don’t want to have it turn up looking the same as that god awful 2014 MGM release.

Not to my knowledge. I’ve never been able to export a LUT from the Color Correct tool and open it directly in After Effects. I’ve always needed to convert them in Resolve first.
Once again, with the latest version I’m getting an error using the LUT in AE 😦
And this tool would be so useful for ESB for matching the TN1 release to my colors, so I’d really love to figure it out.

Hi Harmy. I had the same error. You need to load the LUT generated by the tool into DaVinci Resolve first. Then apply it to the node of an ungraded clip in the “Color” tab. Locate this same clip at the bottom of the Color tab (under the preview window), right click on it and select “Generate 3D LUT (CUBE)”. Save this new LUT somewhere and load it up in After Effects. I’ve been using this technique to do some stuff in Premiere and After Effects so I know it works.

Am I correct in my recollection that the 1997 SE was timed to George Lucas’ Tech IB print of the original '77 Star Wars? I know the Laserdisc and VHS releases of the '97 SE are in no way representative of the colours seen in the cinema, so I’m curious as to how similar the pre-2004 SE is to the original grading.
The colors look really good. There’s a lot of noise in the sky, though. Is that in the source? If not, I would suggest increasing the stabilization parameter, which should reduce the noise substantially. You might need a few more color spaces to converge to the reference colors, but with the increased speed of v2.1 it should not be a problem.
The MGM Blu-ray is pretty noisy and there’s a fair bit of macroblocking in the sky as well, so I suspect that’s where the problem comes from.

I’ll try creating a new LUT with a higher stabilisation setting and more colour spaces to see if that helps.

I made a few minor manual corrections in Resolve to fix clipping issues on a couple of shots, but overall I think it’s come out pretty well. At any rate it’s no longer sickly green 😛 The sky’s actually BLUE again!
Sounds great DrDre! I’ve actually been fiddling with the tool today on the Star Trek Blu-rays. I’ve had some great results matching the Generations Blu-ray to the DVD version (the BD has a very noticeable green shift compared to the previous releases), but matching Wrath of Khan has been much less successful. I’m looking forward to seeing how v2.0 performs.

Seriously, this is truly amazing. I figured that SSE v1 was as good as we could hope for, but this Technicolor footage goes beyond my wildest expectations. Can’t wait to see the finished product!
Also, it might be too early to ask, but since you guys have been able to up the scanning resolution from 2K to 4K, does that mean we may get a 4K release somewhere down the line?

They work with any RCA Composite or S-Video input and they’re very easy to use. If you’re looking to inexpensively capture analogue sources such as VHS tapes and Laserdics to digital, this is one of the better options in my opinion.
Just wanted to jump on here and say congratulations to team negative1 and all those involved in this project. I downloaded it yesterday and it looks absolutely superb! Better than I could have possibly imagined given the source materials you guys had to work with.

I'm also having problems with Resolve. I'm not familiar with this program, so I'm probably doing something wrong. I put the CUBE file from the ColorCorrect tool into the "C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\LUT" folder. It shows up in the list of LUTs in the program, but when I select it I get the same error as DoomBot, "Missing Look Up Table". I also am unable to get the LUT to work in After Effects. Same error as before: "Unable to apply LUT from selected file".
Is someone able to write a short guide on how to go from the ColorCorrect tool to applying a LUT in Resolve? As I say, I'm new to this program, so everything I've worked out so far has just been by trial and error.

Yep, I'm getting the same thing. I've tried both creating a brand new LUT from reference images and importing an existing MAT file and making a LUT from that. Both generate that error. I also can't get the LUTs to work with Resolve or Premiere. Both just go black.
I've done some more extensive testing with the tool over the past couple of weeks, regrading the opening scene of the first Matrix film Blu-ray to match the PAL DVD. I know spoRv attempted this a while back, but comparing his to mine revealed that DrDre's tool is far more accurate.

This was a shot-by-shot regrade too. There are some problems with crushed whites, which the tool doesn't handle well as we know, but overall is looks almost exactly like the DVD.
Just a couple of things I thought I'd mention with regards to the tool itself as well. Firstly, it'd be good to have an Abort button somewhere. At the moment if you make a mistake and want to cancel the calculation or conversion, you have to use task manager to shut the program down and then reopen it.
Secondly, I don't know if this is just on my PC, but there were a number of occasions where I'd be building a correction model, and then for no apparent reason the tool would just stop calculating mid-way. The progress bar would hang and my CPU usage would drop to idle. If I recropped the images and tried again it would usually work but not always.
In any case, as I said before it's an awesome program.
Just wanted to add my thanks to DrDre for this tool. It works amazingly well! I've been trying it with a few different films and it does an awesome job.
In particular, I tried regrading the parking garage scene from the recent Terminator Blu-ray, which has some of the worst teal-shifting I've seen in a while. I matched it to my PAL DVD copy of the film from 2005. Here are the results (which took a couple of days to render!):

I only matched it to one shot though, so the colours aren't 100% accurate across the whole scene. Still, it looks WAAAAAY better than what MGM put out on the Blu-ray.
Looking forward to version 1.3+. If we can start using LUT files from this program in Premiere or After Effects, that's going to be amazing.
Greetings all. I’d like to present my VHS to DVD preservation of all 13 episodes of the classic British children’s program “Tugs”. As per Wikipedia:
Tugs (Stylized TUGS) is a British children’s television series first broadcast in 1988. It was created by the producers of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends, Robert D. Cardona and David Mitton.<sup><span></span></sup> The series dealt with the adventures of two anthropomorphized tugboat fleets, the <span>Star Fleet</span> and the <span>Z-Stacks</span>, who compete against each other in the fictional <span>Bigg City Port</span>.
I used to love this show as a kid. I bought the old VHS tapes off of eBay years ago intending to convert them to DVD. I only just got around to it in the last couple of weeks, so I thought I’d share the result here for others to enjoy and hopefully share with their kids.
It’s only been officially released on home video once in the late 1980s, although clips from the program made their way onto DVD thanks to the American kids’ show “Salty’s Lighthouse” which had re-purposed the footage. I did not have access to those clips however, so all the content presented on this DVD are straight from the VHS tapes.
I’ve cleaned the episodes up a bit with AVISynth to reduce the VHS noise and stabilise the image (although some warping remains). I’ve also cleaned up the audio a bit to reduce the humming and overly powerful bass. Finally, I created a set of basic menus for episode navigation in Adobe Encore.

The only details I can provide you with so far is that we want to take the new Terminator blu-ray back to the original colors and then balance out the pink tint to get back the true original look.
The source of Terminator 2 will be the japanese blu-ray which doesn't have the heavy DVNR. That one's also a little bit pink and needs to be balanced.
Sounds awesome to me! Incidentally, the Japanese Steelbook Blu-ray of T2 is the one I have and it's light years ahead of the SkyNET edition. Hopefully some day soon we'll get a proper restoration of T2, but until then the Japan disk does me just fine!

Well I noticed the clipping issue while I was watching the movie with the Mono track. In the quiet sections the sound dropped out completely. Like, dead silence instead of the usual background noise you get in 'silent' scenes. Then when there was dialog or sound effects, the background noise suddenly came back briefly. It would cut in and out like that. But it wasn't anything to do with the track itself per say. If I muxed the exact same track into an MKV it was totally fine. It was only when I muxed it as a Blu-ray or M2TS that the clipping occurred. And no, there shouldn't be any loss of quality. Basically all I did was make the softer parts slightly louder, without affecting the overall volume of the track.

I synced Stendec file to my own rip of my own Blu-ray, and it syncs perfectly. As mentioned above, the Blu-ray have the MGM logo in two separate files, so all you have to do is use Stendec file, and mux it with the 00000 file which is the main film starting with the Orion logo.
Thanks so much Stendec, for doing what the publisher should have done and didn't. Now I can enjoy the film in all it's mono glory, with top image definition.

As to the 16 second delay, it's pretty much just an extra step that you don't really need to take since, as Stamper said, if you just mux the mono track with the 00000.m2ts file, you won't need to edit the audio at all.
If you're looking to create a new Blu-ray disk for it, my suggestion is to open the 00000.mpls (the playlist file, NOT the video file) in tsMuxer, remove any tracks you don't want, add the mono track, and mux it again as a Blu-ray disk. That way you'll cut out all the logos and extras and just be left with the film and the mono track (as well as any other tracks you left in), which you can then either shrink to a BD25 or burn to a BD50. The chapters will still be there also.
Hmm.. Interesting about the DTS tracks. I wonder why only the home video and broadcast releases omitted that frame. Incidentally though, I'm not using the DTS tracks. I'm using the rips from the Laserdics, which don't have that frame included. I'll have a think and decide what's best to do.
I really enjoyed reading the previous blog too. A lot of fascinating info about the process involved in restoring the film. Looking forward to this new one -1!
