ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED... so it would seem.

I do admit to cheering and whooping ecstatically early this morning when I heard the news.

But it's not over yet. There are plenty of other projects to work on, plenty of making-of specials, cartoons, oddball footage and audio tracks to be restored. And still to be released is...

The HOLIDAY SPECIAL.

Well, with the minor miracle of the OOT being released now, I gotta have *something* to wish for. My hope for this actually happening has risen a notch or two today.

In the meantime... get back to work!!

Help: looking for... Droids and Ewoks animated tv series preservation attempt
Time
I did some research on this a while back and found that while the US never got all of the Droids episodes (they kept re-releasing the same ones over and over!), the UK got EVERY episode on VHS including "The Great Heep". I think the best preservation source would be these copies, unless anyone knows of anything better.

Regarding Ewoks, I think it's the same story between the US/UK, but I didn't have as much interest in researching that. Still, I think they should also be preserved the same way. I feel fairly sure that Lucasfilm will get around to releasing the complete series for both on DVD, but I can almost guarantee that it will be in a somewhat altered form that's not what originally aired.

Yep... I did have a good look at that thread previously. That seems to have been aimed more specifically at just the Kenner commercials (though the thread has now been nullified).

I really need to get a look at Rikter's toy commercials disc to see how that turned out. But again, that's just one part of the project... the other being all the non-Kenner commercials that ran over the years. I don't think anyone's done that part yet, or at least done a thorough job on it.

Your help may consist of me sending you the raw material and the information and asking you to work your magic on the finished product, if you're game.

I think this may warrant a new project thread. I really want to see this come to fruition. There have been some preservation attempts with the Kenner commercials and a few scattered TV spots, but I'd like to see a very focused effort happen with as much information going into it as we can gather.

Info: Holiday Special on 16mm?
Time
BUMP in the night...

An update:

I *finally* heard back from the guy who won the auction on this 16mm film. I had suspected that maybe the reason he never responded to anyone was that he's from France and may not know English, and I think I was right. His English is not very legible.

However, from what I am able to understand of what he wrote, he got robbed. He sent the money by PayPal right when the auction ended, and then the seller seems to have disappeared. I think. I am going to write him back in French to see if I can get him to clarify more details. My patchy French will probably be better than his English appears to be.

To be continued...

Hi daveytod... yeah, let's join forces on this and see what we can come up with. I've worked up some preliminary lists of all the commercials I know of. Right now I'm including *everything*, but as the project progresses we may want to break it up into "Classic Era" and "Prequel Era" commercials. The important thing right now is to know what we're looking for so we know _what_ to look for, hence creating the most complete list of ads that we can come up with. Also, finding air dates for those commercials can be challenging, but I've tried to do that as well.

Once I'm at home where I have my list, I'll post it here for everyone's perusal and comments.

Garrett, I think it's time you and I collaborated again on a new project... Star Wars commercials. Let's get in touch.

My latest obsession has been in collecting information (and video, where possible) on:

1. all the Kenner commmercials that have aired
2. all the other SW commercials that have aired

I have the drunk driving commercial in good quality, as well as some other nifty ones. The ultimate goal, of course, is to collect them all on a DVD in the best possible quality, along with hopefully info on the commercials and when they aired. I've been wanting to do this for a long time now.

Idea: Holiday Special on Blu-ray?
Time
I am unconcerned with any of these quaint ideas.

Currently, I am actually working on a full VHS-to-IMAX film transfer of the Holiday Special, which myself and a handful of minions and toadies will then view daily in my personal Home IMAX Theater.

I don't care what any of you might say about HD or any other format... *NOTHING* compares to seeing a 50-foot-high Bea Arthur sing the Cantina Band song.

Hmmm... curiouser and curiouser.

I'm feeling better all the time about pulling out of the auction bid war on that thing.

I still want to hear back from the guy who won the auction. I could understand if he didn't want to talk about getting burned, but I'd really like to know what he ended up getting, if anything. At the very least, I could warn people about it very publicly on the Holiday Special website.

I've got no time for juvenile antics and name-calling, and I don't care what the age group of the poster is. I say take it to TF.N or wherever it's tolerated. I'd like to think ot.com is a community of generally intelligent, level-headed Star Wars fans who actually care about the films, and can discuss them in a civil, adult-level fashion.

And I want to see the Holiday Special in HD. I'm sure there are top men working on it right now. Top. Men.

I let it go as a probable fake, knowing I'd be outbid long before eBay would answer back about retracting my bid. In the last 27 seconds, 3 guys were fighting for the final bid (using auction snipers no doubt). The guy who won apparently has bought 16mm films in the past, so hopefully he knows what he's doing. I contacted him on behalf of starwarsholidayspecial.com, so hopefully he gets in touch. If it's the real deal, hopefully I'll get some information about it for the site. If it's not, I'll publicise the fact that it was a fake (if the buyer wants).

Okay--

1. It occurred to me that the seller here seems to be only offering one reel of film, as far as I can tell.

2. He claims that the film is "just a tad over 90 minutes" (it says 97 minutes on the canister in magic marker as well).

3. How much film fits on a 16mm reel? (think back to school days and how often they had to change the reels during the film)

4. Did research: standard 7 inch 16mm reel = 11 minutes of film. Even if you had a 14 inch reel, it would only be 38.5 minutes max.

5. The Star Wars Holiday Special would not even come CLOSE to fitting on a single 16mm reel.

6. The auction is a fraud. I don't know what this guy has on this reel, but it's not the Holiday Special.

7. I am attempting to retract my bid. I wish I could warn the others to do the same, but I can't get their contact info.

Info: San Diego Star Wars Society, where art thou?
Time

This may have been addressed before, but according to this:

http://www.iesb.net/star wars/starwars22104.htm

…the SDSWS has had their hands on the three OOT films on 16mm film, and SW with the original non-Episode IV crawl.

So who are these guys, and are they among us? And if not… why not?

And now he's got a new auction up for a "LUCKY BINGO BALL", complete with pictures. Still no pictures of the supposed 16mm film, of course. Will they go up tonight, or ever?

I'm not putting a bid in until I have some kind of tangible evidence of this thing. I can't believe these guys in Argentina/wherever who are already claiming to be willing to pay well over $300 for the shadiest auction item I've seen in a long time. Are they really that naive?

I'll be extremely irritated if it DOES turn out to be real and one of these other guys pays some ridiculous price for it and gets it, then sits on it and lets it gather dust in his "private collection", never answering any queries about it or getting in touch with anyone. That would be typical.

Evidence of OOT at Lucasfilm?
Time
It has long been my opinion that the OOT has already been restored for quite some time, and is sitting archived that way. When LFL makes changes to anything, they need to start with the original and work from there, so that means the original unaltered version needs to be available in the best condition possible.

One thing that irritates me greatly is when historical documentaries about the OOT and the process that went into making them get made, and LFL only provides the current, CG-altered footage... footage that didn't exist at that point in history! I know it would be possible for the unaltered footage to be provided in all these cases.
