//RETURNING TO JEDI\\: NTSC & PAL DVD
Time
That's really cool and exciting. I think it means that Hasbro is digging really deep for ideas these days to keep the line going. We just need a sandstorm Lando and Leia to complete that set. Also, now that we have a floppy-hat Luke and Tatooine Biggs from the cut scenes, I hope they produce Camie, Fixer, Deak and Windy to go along as well. You never know.

Also, I'd like to see some more Holiday Special figures! We have red Snaggletooth (Zutton/Zutmore) and the cartoon Boba Fett... now we need Ackmena, Saun Dann, and the Wookiee family! And don't forget Gormaanda, the 4-armed chef...

Old Star Wars Games on New Computer Systems (was: Tie Fighter Collectors' CD-ROM Works in DOSBox)
Time
DOXBox is truly amazing. I've been using it for some time now, and it's caused miracles to happen, particularly after the 0.72 release came out. It runs almost any DOS game now, and in most cases runs it very well (better than the original DOS setup did in some cases). I've been able to play tons of old DOS-era Star Wars games with it, which brings a smile to my face.

Now that most DOS games can be run successfully under XP with DOSBox, the hardest games to get working at this point are certain ones that were actually written for Windows (95/98)... some of them just won't even install under XP without bombing out. And I'm at a loss for how to fix that.

Love me...love my Star Wars obsession?

Well, I wouldn't quite say that, but I would say that she seriously misrepresented how much she liked Star Wars when we first got together. Later on this fact came out during arguments when she declared that my interest in it annoyed her. Wish I'd known that in the beginning!

Not that it was a deciding factor in our breakup, but if the person I'm with finds my interest in Star Wars annoying then clearly I'm with the wrong person. Also, I'd rather be with someone who is indifferent (but tolerant) of Star Wars than someone who claims to really like it and actually doesn't.

Lately I've been seeing someone whose geek level is even higher than mine. Needless to say, Star Wars is not an issue between us!

Help: looking for... The Reflecting Skin HD (anyone in Canada?)
Time
Yes, I do hope you plan to continue on with your restoration project since apparently we aren't going to have the HD version (yet). I for one would be very interested in checking out the results when it's complete. I'd love to watch the film again since it's been a while, but I don't feel much like watching my VHS copy.

BTW, I did find a couple of trailers for it online, if you're looking for extras to stick on there.

Info: Can't find a dvd? HP will make it for you!
Time
Personally I'm excited about this, but also afraid that we may only get cropped and/or non-anamorphic and/or non-remastered transfers

Any opinions?
I think it's great, but don't get too excited about it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I take this to mean only movies that have been previously available in their catalog of DVDs at some point. I highly doubt they're going to do a full-on film transfer of something that's never been on DVD before just because somebody requests it. I think this is just for titles that are hard-to-find.

Still, this can be a good thing anyway. I can't count the number of times I've thought of a movie I wanted to purchase that I know has been on DVD, only to go out looking for it and find that none of the stores will carry it because it's too old or obscure, and not in their top 500 (or whatever). And so I usually end up looking for some place to order it online. This at least give me another option.

It's a start. A first step into a larger world, hopefully.

Star wars deleted scenes are where now?
Time
You might also be thinking of starwarscutscenes.com, which is one of my sites. Due to hosting issues, that site name got stolen by a cybersquatter and I had to move it to a new location, which can be found here:

http://www.starwarsholidayspecial.com/swcs/

The good news is that the site is now part of T'bone's family, and has its own 'planet' on the main site at http://www.starwarz.com along with my Holiday Special site.

The Cut Scenes site's design hasn't changed much in the last 10 years or so (hopefully I'll revamp it sooner or later), but I did put updated video clips on the site recently in better resolution. Enjoy!

Help: looking for... The Reflecting Skin HD (anyone in Canada?)

Wow... I don't know why I didn't think about requesting this myself earlier! I am a huge fan of this film as well, but of course all I have is a VHS copy over on the rack there. I keep waiting for a DVD release to no avail. Wasn't aware of the international versions, but it sounds like they all have their issues (not being in English, in particular, except for the Japanese version which apparently is a botched transfer).

I second the request and plea for someone in Canada to cap this. Would love to see a HD2DVD conversion akin to Rad! and the pre-official release Twilight Zone: The Movie.

Info: Vintage 1979 Star Wars merchandise video...
Time
Yes, thanks a bunch Darth Payne! Finally I was able to watch it and enjoy it in .avi format. I couldn't get the .flv files to work right either - GOM Player claimed I didn't have the right codec to play them or they were damaged, and VLC Player crapped out on me after a few seconds of playback.

Since we are going to be forced to deal with .flv (Flash Video) files, I think it might be good to discuss what method works best for converting .flv to another format, what program to use for that, and also what player(s) are best for raw .flv playback. Personally, I like to use GOM Player for playback since it's the only one I've found so far that allows both full-screen playback *and* (most importantly) the ability to skip through the file to any point of playback, something that VLC Player doesn't do (it quits if you try).

May I just reiterate how much I hate Flash video content?

Star Wars film versions and best DVD sources

Good point. Since the Empire 70mm print does actually have differences in visual content, I should include that. Of course, we have no known source for it, but I think it warrants a mention. Something like this?

The Empire Strikes Back Special Edition (70mm version)
Differences: various minor scene differences
Best source: [none known]

What would be a good summary of the differences to the 70mm version?

No luck on my end with the method I usually use to grab embedded video. I get the files, but they always wind up incomplete or with some kind of playback issue. I'm hoping you can put yours up soon. I can't even watch the thing on the website without hiccups.

God, I hate Flash video. The whole starwars.com video section is now converted to it, and not only is it a pain to try to watch (let alone save), but the quality sucks compared to QuickTime (which is generally excellent). Why'd they have to do it? One step forward (for security, I guess?), two steps back (for quality and playback). Good job, guys.

Help Wanted: Need help finding a site listing Star Wars documentaries!
Time

Ever have that thing happen where you find a really cool and important website, but forget to bookmark it… and then later you try to find it again but no matter how hard you search you still come up with nothing?

That’s where I am right now. There was a site out there listing all the important documentaries, making-ofs, and TV specials for Star Wars chronologically, and I can’t seem to find it anywhere. The link has been posted on this site before, even recently I think, but I can’t find reference to it here either. It has a lot of entries in small text on white backgrounds, as I recall.

Can anybody help me out? Actually, I’m interested in any other site that has a nice big list of SW stuff that’s appeared on TV as well.

Star Wars Holiday Special on ABC's "Nightline"

I'm pretty sure it only aired once, so they must have added the "Christmas may be over..." part for the website. I can't view the website version, so I can't tell you if there are any differences, but I can tell you that the version I recorded is 4 minutes long, including one Nightline bumper and Terry Moran's intro and outro.
The website version appears to clock in at about 3:35, with no Nightline bumper but including the newscaster's "Christmas may be over" intro and a voice-over outro by John Berman.

I wonder what was the first night it actually aired? The website shows the 26th, and the clip's intro from there says "Christmas may be over...", but we were talking about it before that. Sounds like you saw it the night of the 20th, Mielr... so I'm assuming it aired more than once. I'm still interested in your copy of it, especially if it's complete as aired the first time. Can you spot any differences?

BTW: thanks to none & Sunday256 for your links - you guys are totally on the team!

EDIT: It was Josh Berman talking to a writer for Time Out New York about the Holiday Special and how bad it is, how it's not available on video but you can see it on YouTube, etc. and how George Lucas doesn't want anyone to see it etc. They showed a few brief clips of it as well.

I've never seen anything about the HS on such a mainstream show. It makes me wonder if it's now just a matter of time before there's an official release.
Anybody happen to record this little bit of history? I'd be very interested in getting my hands on this.

I do have the French version as well as the Swedish one, but the video quality is very poor on both and wouldn't make for suitable source material for a fan edit. I don't have a lot of hope of turning up better, unfortunately... they are difficult enough to find as-is.
