VHS To DVD Problem
Time
From my own experience with VHS and those screen shots, I'd say that the tape is scratched. Unfortunately, it's possible that your VHS machine (the first one, not the new) did it to the tape. Test this out by using a new machine with tapes that have never been played through your old one.

This happened to me about 5 years ago. It drove me crazy because I couldn't figure it out until I tested a new machine with new tapes.

The version currently available is fixed, but there is a new version by Cowclops/ TR47 that is even better. It was just recently finished so it hasn't been widely distributed yet. Contact TR47 for details.

Ah, thanks.

Are some of the other projects going on trying to fix this?

I've e-mailed Rikter about getting the OT on DVD-R. I wonder what versions he'll send me, maybe TR-47, are his missing these few seconds?

None of the TR47 versions are missing any footage. There was a 4 second blank spot because of an overlooked laserdisc side change on the first TR47 release of TESB, but I fixed that.

As far as I know, the only version that is missing the welding footage is the Dr. Gonzo version.

DVDcover art for Rowman Bonus Features
Time

I believe that RowMan only compiled the first three discs and the fourth was made by Cowclops for the TR47 set (correct me if I'm wrong guys). I have an almost complete cover for the Holiday Special disc, a work-in-progress for the DefCol disc (both will be posted when complete). I was planning to do individual covers for Rowman's three-disc set, but since I keep them in 2-disc cases with my TR47 OT discs, I like ReverendBeastly's system. Anyhow, RowMan has nearly completed a new set, which is superior to the set listed above (and is the best extras set around IMHO), so you might want to wait...

Actually, I brought that 4th TR47 supplemental disc into the loop. It is similar to the Dr. Gonzo supplemental disc except that it does not include trailers (which are on the my individual movie bonus discs) and includes all of the scenes with commentary from the Definitive Collection films (because no commentary is included on the TR47 movies).

For now, my 4th supplemental disc will remain the same, but THX is correct. I am now completing 3 new bonus materials DVDs. The core material will remain the same on these discs and there will be some additional material and easter eggs. The menu styles were meant to match the EditDroid trilogy, but the discs will still complement any other trilogy set.

For myself, I'm just going to add the bonus disc info to the existing EditDroid covers as the discs will be stored together anyway.

Info: Fixing the ESB TR47 4 second black screen

TMPGEnc DVD Author has a feature to "add DVD video." I just loaded the original TR47 version into it from the disc and it transferred the entire contents to the hard drive as an mpg2 file and also kept the chapter points. I have never noticed any audio sync issues with the original or the "re-edit" and I have watched them quite a few times.

Info: Star Wars Executor Boxset VHS (1995)

I don't have the equipment to actually improve any of my VHS transfers. I use a DVD recorder and then transfer those files to a proper DVD with menus. The only thing I have recently done with From SW to Jedi (for my new EditDroid ROTJ bonus disc) was a new transfer using a newer original tape and a JVC S-VHS machine using the S-VHS inputs into the DVD recorder. My new transfer is a slight improvement, but I'm sure others with the proper equipment and software could do better.

I thought about doing it the way Rowman did with TMPGENc DVD Author (he did use TMPGENc DVD Author didn't he?) but MeBeJedi said in another thread that his version still left 1 black frame or something to that effect:
I thought there was a link to Rowman's technique, but it was still off by one black frame. I'm guessing that's the best it's going to get. - MeBeJedi

Actually, I did the blank frames fix first in TMPGENc DVD Author (clean edit, no black frames left over) with no menu. I liked the results so much that I ran the fixed version again through TMPGENc DVD Author in order to add a simple frame capture title screen. Rikter's right. It only took about 30 minutes and was a lot less complicated. One could even use TMPGENc DVD Author with my fixed title screened version to remove the menu screen without re-encoding in about the same time.

You could buy on eBay, but you would pay a lot less if anything at all here. Most of the eBayers selling the OT on DVD are trying to make huge profits. That's not what it's all about here.

Of course, if it's something that no one else has and you've exausted your resources in getting it some other way cheaper, go for it.

Info Wanted: Digitally Remastered Original Trilogy preservation set?!?! (on ebay)
Time
This set is a dual layered, factory pressed boot. I got this one quite awhile ago and it sucks in comparison to the single layered editions that have already been made here. The video quality is not that great and is filled with interlacing errors. Although letterboxed, it is not 16:9 enhanced. I paid about $32 for it and was sorely disappointed! Steer clear!!!

Here is Rikter's listing on his trade list:

The Original Trilogy - The “Kristhemovieman” Edition
Also known as - The Definitive Edition Dual Layer Set
Sorry no duplication of this set - I can provide a link to buy it
- 3 DVD’s - HK “Pressed” Silver DVD
- Source - U.S. Definitive Collection LD rip version
