4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

DrDre said:

Apparently Disney themselves have confirmed 4K restorations exist for the SE versions of the OT at an event, which were completed in 2011/2012 probably under Lucas’ supervision:

http://www.furiousfanboys.com/the-entire-star-wars-trilogy-exists-in-4k/

It seems likely these restorations will be released in the forseeable future.

I would be conflicted if they released the special editions in 4K.

I swore I’d never again purchase the special editions after buying the first blu ray set, and I am extremely happy with my Harmy discs, but I’m not sure I would be able to resist. I suppose I am part of the problem.

Is it correct that it would be impossible to release AotC and RotS in 4K? So any new 4K releases would involve the Original Trilogy, Rogue One, The Force Awakens, and The Phantom Menace. Solo and TLJ are already in 4K.

It would be my hope that they would at least release the Original Trilogy in some sort of Blade Runner style set that included multiple version, but after all these years it’s starting to feel hopeless.

It would be interesting if the SEs did show up on shelves in 4K. I’m not sure what I’d do.

Star Wars Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

https://winteriscoming.net/2019/02/06/disney-perfectly-fine-ea-handling-star-wars-games/

In 2013, Electronic Arts and Disney signed a 10-year licensing agreement that gave EA the sole right to produce Star Wars video games. Since then, the developer has produced are two lackluster, unimaginative Star Wars: Battlefront games, both of which had their fair share of controversy. (For comparison’s sake, when LucasArts was managing the Star Wars license, we got 16 games over the same span of time.)

Star Wars Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

I love the movies and the animated series, and now we even have live action series on the way. There are books, and graphic novels, toys, collectibles shirts, cosplay, everything you could want. But if I had to pick an area where they have really dropped the ball, it is VIDEO GAMES.

There should be a ton of Star Wars games. Everything from side scrolling to first person shooters and racing games. There should be some that take you through the events of all the movies and some that create all new adventures. Fighting games. Turned based RPGs and strategy based RPGs.

I know some of these already exist in some form, but they are relatively ancient now. There needs to be new versions. I need a Rogue One game and a Star Wars: Resistance racing game. I need to play through the throne room scene of The Last Jedi.

There’s just so much potential and not nearly enough has been done with it in my opinion. I am not much of a video game player, but I would buy new consoles just to play some of these games and I can’t be the only one.

Strong Female characters in the Star Wars universe
Time

I wouldn’t classify Rey, Holdo, Rose or Phasma as strong characters per se.

Rey-
She is an exceptionally strong person. Her life on Jakku has been hard, but she is still kind to others. She believes in doing what’s right. I attribute her success using the Force to her character. She has demonstrated a strong will and determination. Where we’ve seen others profess that it cannot be done or complain that life isn’t fair, she always believes in herself and her ability to overcome the challenges. Just because she perseveres through adversity, doesn’t mean she hasn’t experienced it. From her abandonment on Jakku and hard life of a scavenger, being pursued and captured by Kylo, seeing Han killed and Finn badly injured, the unwillingness of Luke to train her, further rejection from Kylo. She just keeps going. She is like the star QB. It doesn’t matter if the previous play went poorly. There’s no time to dwell on that. Just line up and execute this play. Just play this down, and then the next. She makes the people around her better.

Holdo-
I have no problem with her not wanting to sit down and explain every decision to a recently demoted Poe. You think an Admiral feels obligated to hold everyone’s hand and walk them through everything just to get their approval?

Phasma-
She is a villain, but is a very strong character. She commands the respect of those around her and is an intimidating foe. She makes a lot out of the limited screen time we get to see her.

Rose-
Here is a post I made previously regarding Rose:
Rose Tico holds the entire movie together.

At the end of The Force Awakens, Finn had made some progress, but this arc was far from over. He cared about Rey enough to overcome his fears and accompany Han and Chewie to Starkiller in an effort to rescue her. But he wasn’t honest about his reasons for going. He exaggerated his knowledge of Starkiller because as he told Han, he was just there for Rey. He didn’t care about the Resistance, or their cause.

Finn meets two people in The Last Jedi who have a profound effect on him. Rose is in agony over the loss of her sister, yet is still holding to her ideals and devoted to the Resistance. She has lost everything but will simply not quit. Then in stark contrast he meets DJ who has no convictions at all. Finally the light bulb comes on and Finn takes a side. He faces off with the embodiment of his greatest fear in Phasma and pronounces himself “Rebel” scum. He is fully on board now and is a different person by the time they reach Crait.

Finn is so gung-ho, in a display reminiscent of Poe’s previous unwillingness to follow orders, he tries to take on the First Order all by himself. Rose saves him because she believes the way to win is not by throwing your life away, but by living to fight another day, obviously informed by the loss of her sister.

Poe learns to respect authority before he can be in a position of authority and a true leader. Rey goes from seeking to identify herself through others to being comfortable with who she is and understands her place in the galaxy. There is just so much character development and wonderful storytelling. The Last Jedi is a great movie.

When did you realize that George Lucas was full of it
Time

Some of George’s comments around the time of the GOUT did turn me off somewhat, and the continued absence of an official release of the Unaltered Originals hurts too. But none of this would be here without him so there’s that to consider.

Yes, there is some revisionism, we’ve all done it ourselves. I think a lot of other people like Ralph McQuarrie, Dennis Muren, John Dykstra, Irvin Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan, Ben Burtt, and Marcia Lucas deserve more credit that they’ve received. But in this age of entitled fans spewing hate, Lucas has been the target of an unfair amount of criticism as well. Maybe the prequels would have been different if Lucas was more collaborative at that time, maybe that’s not the case at all. It hardly matters now.

I can’t imagine there will ever be anything like Star Wars to ever come along again. I feel privileged to have grown up at just the right time to have fully enjoyed it all from the beginning, and I’m still enjoying the ride, bumps and all. I’m enjoying the new movies immensely, and I don’t think I’ll live to see the end.

Thanks again George. May the Force be with you!

Time

I love George Lucas. I don’t agree with every decision he has ever made and I don’t like everything he has ever done, but he created the greatest franchise of all time and he deserves my gratitude. I do think he gets far too much credit for some things and far too much ridicule for others, but if you enjoy cinema at all, then George Lucas is someone you should thank.

Thoughts on Star Wars Titles

The Last Jedi is actually referenced in the first paragraph of The Force Awakens opening crawl:

Luke Skywalker has vanished.

has been destroyed.

A fitting title I must say! (Before the release of the movie everyone was speculating who were the last Jedi, was the title plural, when the answer was there all along)

I wonder if the title for Episode IX is in the crawl from The Last Jedi?

The FIRST ORDER reigns.
Having decimated the peaceful
Republic, Supreme Leader Snoke
now deploys the merciless
legions to seize military
control of the galaxy.

Only General Leia Organa’s
band of RESISTANCE fighters
stand against the rising
tyranny, certain that Jedi
Master Luke Skywalker will
return and restore a spark of
hope
to the fight.

But the Resistance has been
exposed. As the First Order
speeds toward the rebel base,
the brave heroes mount a
desperate escape…

The Last Jedi is a well written and well made movie, and I think that is why many critics like it. The Last Jedi also takes Luke Skywalker, one of the most beloved characters of all time, in some very unexpected directions. Some people find that very refreshing and others find it a travesty, thus the split between fans. I think over time people will appreciate TLJ more.

Star Wars is as great as it ever was. Some movies are better than others but the franchise and its fans are all doing well. The internet has given everyone a voice and most times the unhappy ones have the most to say, even if they are a minority, just as I was during the prequels.

A little contradictory seeing that you just said you hated the PT, no?

Val

I like everything they’re doing now.

I will say the prequels have grown in me some. I can now appreciate them as unique products of their place and time. Perhaps all it took was the realization of that style not lasting forever. I still do not consider them to be well made, but I like certain parts very much.

Everything Luke, Leia, and Han fought for has been forgotten, undone, and now we are supposed to expect the new characters will somehow fix it permanently this time.

Nothing is ever permanent, especially across an entire galaxy. Just because there is a new conflict doesn’t mean the fighting for a previous victory is for nothing.

Time

Star Wars Celebration 5-day tickets sold out pretty quick. I’d say Star Wars is fine. It’s an absolute wonderful time to be a Star Wars fan.

I sympathize though. I felt the same way during the prequels. I didn’t like them, but the look and feel of the prequels were taking over everything I saw that was Star Wars and I didn’t see an end in sight. It was a sad time for me, but now Disney has come along and in my opinion have brought Star Wars back in a big way with new movies and new series with much more to come.

Maybe whatever the Game of Thrones producers are working on will be more to your liking, or even whatever Rian Johnson is working on. Maybe not having classic characters and it being a separate thing will be more acceptable to you?

Star Wars isn’t ending anytime soon. I think there will be a little something for almost everyone. Me? I love it all.
