My guess is, aside from the haters online

The Mandalorian & Jedi: Fallen Order show us there are no “haters”, only Star Wars Fans
https://youtu.be/OJ_tFpJy1Uk

Nope, wrong, uh-uh. There are only two camps — haters and True Fans™; there is no overlap, no third or fourth camps. True Fans™ love everything with the Star Wars brand name; True Fans™ love only George Lucas’ six-episode Saga, TCW, and Legends; True Fans™ love only George Lucas’ six-episode Saga and Legends; True Fans™ love only George Lucas’ six-episode Saga; True Fans™ love only the Original Trilogy and everything produced by Disney; True Fans™ love only the Original Original Trilogy; True Fans™ love only ANH & TESB; True Fans™ love only SW '77. Everyone who doesn’t love what True Fans™ love aren’t True Fans™; they’re just haters, and should be regarded with as much disdain and condescension as one can mustre.

Obviously the phrase “true fans” is obnoxious and you’ll get no argument from me there. But “haters” is a useful term.

True haters.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I swore I’d never buy the special editions again, only the unaltered Originals would get my money, but I must say after what I’m seeing on Disney+ it looks like I will be buying the 4K UHD disc next year. The resolution and colors are just too good.

The thought of another release and still no unaltered Originals is disheartening, but maybe we’ve turned a corner having seen the worst it’s ever going to get. I think we’ve seen the absolute last of George’s tinkering and are now at least headed in the right direction of getting a better presentation.

I have to think an entire Skywalker saga boxed set would have to include some new special features content and can’t help clinging to a hope of the unaltered Originals included.

I don’t have the expertise some here do, but I thought right away the Original Trilogy on Disney+ looked better than what I previously had access too.

What is the consensus on this? How good of a company is Reliance? Is this the best the Original Trilogy can look? Not talking about Unaltered vs special editions, just how good is the quality of what we ARE seeing?

I’ve clicked on comparisons between various releases, and sometimes I get to the point where one part of a still pic may look better in one version, but looking at a different part of the same pic may look better on another version. Eventually I just get lost and have no idea what color or how dark anything should be anymore.

All I can say is to my untrained eye when I view them, I haven’t seen the Originals look this good in a long time, but I am at a severe disadvantage because I don’t have access to 4K77, only pics from it online.

Is this new Disney+ 4K HDR version indeed comparable in quality to 4K77, aside from not being the unaltered version? Could something better than everything we currently have available be achieved if someone else was given complete access and control?

Why can’t they just pull a Blade Runner, in which they release another Special Edition while packaging it with the previous versions (original cuts, 1997 versions, 2004 versions, and 2011 versions)?

I think everyone would love that, but this is something they could have done for years and haven’t. Many have said Disney/Lucasfilm is either contractually obligated by Lucas to only release the revised editions, or they feel beholden to Lucas to not go against his wishes. I used to think that sounded like a crazy conspiracy theory, but here we are with a restored 4K HDR version of the Original Trilogy, that was done years ago, and no sign of the unaltered versions.

Could they be included in some way on the inevitable disc release? Maybe, but I wouldn’t bet my credits on it.

Empire of Dreams is different. I don’t have a comprehensive list but the one example I know of for sure is that the Anthony Daniels is talking about George waddling during the filming of ROTJ and they walk up to Jabba’s palace they replaced the original shot with the 2011 shot with the expanded door.

JEDIT:
One other obvious change is when they talk about Williams recording the music for ANH they replaced the original shots with the SE shots. It seems whenever they show clips from the movie it’s all the 2011 master

That makes me think the unaltered originals will NEVER see an official release again.

Well, add another section to the George Lucas Unreliable Narrator thread. He’s done it. He’s won. He’s successfully rewritten history.

This day just gets weirder and weirder for me. So mixed on it all. Loving The Mandalorian, appreciating the better colors of the movies in 4K HDR, but now there are brand new tweaks and losing hope of ever seeing an official unaltered release.

I can’t believe no one in control cares.

It’s getting downright laughable how many changes the Han shooting Greedo scene has had. You couldn’t ask for a more straightforward, universally understandable, basic character building scene. Now it’s a pure mess.

At this point, I’d bet $20 when they finally release on 4K discs, it will be changed again. Maybe some slow motion?

I don’t have the technical knowledge many here have. All I can say is The Original Trilogy looks better on Disney+ than the official blu-rays. I don’t know if any of it is the new transfer Gareth Edwards talked about seeing when he made Rogue One, or is it just the better colors of HDR Dolby Vision.

I was all set to relax my criticism of the special editions and just enjoy seeing The Original Trilogy in higher resolution and better colors… but they had to go and alter it AGAIN! SERIOUSLY?!

Can you imagine if every time the released the Godfather movies or Casablanca, they altered it somehow and never released the originals?

I haven’t seen 4K77, I only have the Harmy blu-rays, but they remain my definitive source, and I’m so thankful to have them, especially now. Not sure I’ll live to see the true versions officially released again. I believe Lucas would have never stopped tinkering, but I’d never have thought this would happen after the Disney purchase. I thought they would finally release the unaltered versions.

I loved the Mandalorian and I am excited for the other new series, but also very sad regarding hope for the unaltered versions. This is such a very odd mixed-feeling kinda day.

It’s what’s made people act like they’re special for being a Star Wars fan seem weird, to me. “Oh, congrats, you’re a super-big fan of like, the most popular things ever made for theaters. How unique.” If people are somehow made to focus less on all the CULTURAL IMPORTANCE and BOX OFFICE SIGNIFICANCE and THE POWER OF MYTH and instead have to simply reckon with the movies AS movies, without hanging a bunch of historical weight on everything Star Wars-related… that’s not really a bad thing, I don’t think.

It’s like a chicken vs egg conversation. Do people like Star Wars because it has cultural significance and a huge box office, or is it culturally significant and big at the box office because people like it? Probably some of both.

I like the movies themselves very much, they are my favorites. Part of that is the interaction with other fans online, at conventions, and at theaters, but that isn’t all there is to it or I wouldn’t have watched them all many times alone, but yes I’m sure nostalgia plays huge role in it all. I don’t feel the need to separate nostalgia from Star Wars to prove they measure up on some sort of objective scale, even though I do like to point out when I see parts that are especially well made. I like what I like and years from now I’ll have nostalgia for The Rise of Skywalker when I go see episode XII.

Does that make me “special?” No, but I think Star Wars is special.

I don’t think the prequels are great, but I’ve got a ticket for the nine-movie marathon and I’m going to watch them all. Star Wars is forever, but I am not, so while I’m here, I am going to take part in all of the Star Wars I can. There’s just nothing like a Star Wars event, especially the opening night of a new movie.

I wasn’t crazy about TPM or AotC, but I couldn’t wait for RotS. I just can’t imagine being at home while others are participating in the spectacle of it all.

As I said earlier, Star Wars will grow and evolve over time. There will be highs and lows, and growing pains. It’s not going to be the same as 1977. It’s a different world now. That makes those Originals even more special to me. I can still appreciate what Star Wars is for the next generation too. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
