The Cowclops Transfers (a.k.a. the PCM audio DVD's, Row47 set) Info and Feedback Thread (Released)
Time
Let's hope that it is a matter of the 2.0 shots being more true to the LD and the 1.0 shots going through more tweaking and adjustment. If that is the case I would be happy to find out that Cowclops didn't go overboard with the sharpness or contrast tweaking. Even though it is tempting to do so with any transfer, you are really just inserting false information into the final product. I would much rather have it left up to me by using the sharpness and contrast on my tv rather than having the person doing the transfer making subjective adjustments regarding how much to change the picture. Since I don't have the LD I can't make a distinction as to which one is more accurate.

I might be way off with this sharpness thing, but I noticed that if I look at the these captures at 800% zoom in paint the 2.0 looks MUCH cleaner than the 1.0. A good reference point is the red light on R2D2 in the top comparison. I looks very smooth and colorful in the 1.0 shot, and it looks blocky and terrible by comparison in the 1.0 screenshot.

Could it be that the original 1.0 was artificially sharpened more than 2.0? That would explain less jagged edges in 2.0 when zoomed in close, and it would also explain the appearance of a sharper picture in the 1.0 caps. Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but it could be that 1.0 appears sharper in the caps, but 2.0 is closer to the LD source due to fewer adjustments in sharpness. I guess only Cowclops would know if this is the case.

Info Wanted: Your Favorite OT Preservation Project And Why?
Time
It has got to be XO. Going throught these films frame by frame is the one undertaking that nobody has been willing to try, and it will no doubt set the XO transfers high atop mount olympus when they are finished. I like to think of this project as the rapture for OT fans. We don't know when it will be finished and it will likely take a long while, but when it is complete it will be the like the second coming of the OT in all of its glory (the first coming of course being on the big screen). Though many have argued that the second coming was the release of the Definitive Collection laserdisc set, I have to respectfully disagree. I cannot classify them as the OT "in its full glory" because you have to change discs during the film. Once I crack the first beer I am not moving my ass until the final credits.

Info: The 'complete' OT feedback thread. Put all the star wars glitches & fixes in here.

"Erase the rear window in cockpit shots of Vader's TIE fighter. The model has no rear window."

I'm not trying to be a smart ass or anything but are fixes to bloopers like this one part of the XO project? It is very cool to read all of the problems with the master that are being cleaned up, but stuff like the rear window is not really a "problem" with the master. The greatest thing about this XO project is that it will probably result in the single greatest transfer of the OTC, and I highly doubt that anyone in the future will put as much effort into a transfer as you guys have. Once you star fixing "bloopers" though, you just have another altered SE version. Maybe I am a purist, but fixing mattes and correcting blotches and contrast is a whole different thing than painting out windows etc. Once the line is crossed from restoration to subjective changes for continuity etc., it seems that the transfer would really lose alot of its appeal. Darth Vader's Tie fighter has a window and Han shoots first, same thing.

COWCLOPS AND TR47

I am sorry to add to the fluff with this post but I sat down tonight and watched the entire trilogy again with a more critical eye and I am amazed with the quality of these transfers. It is hard for me to remember how the original trilogy looked when I last saw it on the big screen, but I can say with absolutley no doubt that this is this best that they have looked since then. I will refrain from any further posts for the purpose of nothing but props and thanks, but I must say that Cowclops' technical knowledge and hard work has resulted in a final product that is in an entirely different category than all previous transfers. You guys f#*cking rule! If anyone critisizes these discs please drop me an e-mail and I will personally break his nose for you, it's the least I can do.
THANKS

This "newbie" has been reading and posting in this thread for quite some time. If you had bothered to read the entire thread as I have, you would have found every possible piece of technical information you could possibley desire (often times to the point of redundancy). When a person reviews a transfer, all anyone wants to know is how the damn thing looks and sounds. They don't want to have technical information rehashed for the fifth time. This transfer looks and sounds better than any other to date. If you want to know why and how READ THE THREAD.

Just finished watching the new transfers. Cowclops did one hell of a nice job on these. The color and clarity are unbelievable. As always Cowclops' sound is perfect. This blows away the original transfers. I urge everyone to properly set the brightness on your tv before watching. I have read threads where people are comparing different transfers and most of their complaints could be easily addressed by properly setting the brightness level. Once I found the sweet spot in the brightness level I was blown away with these new transfers. Huge thanks to Cowclops and TR47, you guys have truly outdone yourselves.

I noticed that Cowclops left some instruction on this page of the thread in terms of how to properly set your tvs brightness for his dvds. I tried his recommendation on my old set and it makes a HUGE difference. From what I have heard about the quality of the new set, it is probably a good idea for everyone to buy some adult diapers in preparation for there first viewing. I can't wait to get mine, I'm am going to stare at my mailbox until they arrive. I am already wearing my diaper just in case.

I have the same issues that you do with the original TR47 set. I have to drop my brightness down very low in order to clear up black areas and avoid highly pronounced white boxes around ships in flight. I am not sure if this is a gamma problem with the dvd or if it is even avoidable given the Laserdisc source. I have very little understanding of how a Laserdisc generates its brightness, luminance, etc. I do agree with your pointing out that whatever the problem is it seems to have a big effect on how much brightness can be applied to the dvd transfer without black being distorted severely. I noticed that is is even very apparent in the black widescreen bars, it seems that these would be a good place to reference in terms of properly adjusting gamma properties.

The torrents are cool and they definitley have there place, but I think that many people forget that they can't survive without legitimate sponsorship to creators of any media form. It is the sponsorship that allows for future projects by the creators of any media. If you love a musician, director, game designer, etc. and you are impressed with what they have created for god sake man buy a legitimate copy as a simple thank you for their hard work. If they create inferior media, or refuse to release profitable material for selfish reasons which the fans have requested to be made available, the torrents are both ethical and ass kicking.

Anyone who continues to give no credit to TR47 should think twice. Although Cowclops is now known to be the ass kicking creator of these sets, TR47 may be equally as responsible for the sets popularity. Without TR47 most of us would probably be unaware of the existence of these transfers. There certainly would not have been a V 2.0 without his dedication and sponsorship. Cowclops and TR47 both kick ass. The name TR47 sounds better, but the Cowclops logo rules (especially the back story). I have put both on my V 2.0 cover art crediting Cowclops with the transfer and TR47 with sponsorship.

I just went through this entire thread and I now know that it is Cowclops who is to be credited with the production of the TR47 discs. When my kids are old enough I will show them these transfers and tell them the legend of Cowclops and TR47. I love the original set and I am sure I will be blown away with the new set. It will be even more impressive to my kids though, I can't ever thank you guys enough for allowing them the opportunity to see the original trilogy in all of its glory.

I have been away from the forum from quite some time and I just found out about the new project. Please let us all know where to aquire them as soon as they are ready. I have said it before and I'll say it again: We all owe TR47 a huge debt of gratitude, you do God's work my friend!
