Editing Notes From Cowclops:

Hooked up the s-video out on a Pioneer Elite CLD-59 Laserdisc player to a Sony Digital8 camcorder with analog in. Recorded the video to DV format by way of the camcorder, and used firewire to digitally transfer the video into the computer. From there, used several rograms to filter out the noise from the laserdisc. Then, encoded the video to DVD format with CinemaCraft Encoder SP. Finally, authored the DVD with DVDit PE and wrote it to a Ritek 2x DVD-R with a Pioneer DVR-104 drive using Nero.

Glitches/Errors/Oddities/Nuked:

 • ESB has 4 seconds of blank screen before Leia welding footage (At 50m 31s), ROTJ - on some DVD players there MAY be a slight stutter when a speeder bike explodes due to a bitrate jump.

Editing Notes From Cowclops:

ON FILTERS: I realized that there is no way to really eliminate the noise without trading it off for smearing in the moving scenes or loss of detail everywhere, so on the new set I used noise reduction that is actually stronger (because it searches more frames at a time to decide what the noise free version is) but it is applied in full strength less often. What this means is that in the most still scenes, you get near perfect noise reduction, but as soon as you get any movement the entire frame basically reverts to the sharp, but noisy image. What it really means is that you don’t get anywhere near as much smearing because no real noise reduction is being applied to the moving scene, PLUS since its moving you’re less likely to be able to focus on any noise ANYWAY. This goes back to the whole reason some still frames may not look that great… if you freeze frame something that isn’t perfectly still, you’ll see the noise and it won’t look that pretty, but in motion your eyes won’t be able to follow it anyway.

Mind you, I didn’t manually do this on a scene by scene basis, just decided on an overall setting once and used it for all 3 movies. When I say its “applied less often” it means that the algorithm that decides whether to apply noise reduction or not to any individual portion of a frame kicks in less frequently.

ON SUBTITLES: Basically, heres what I did. The subtitles are in the black bars in the laserdisc version of the movies. When I cropped some of the black bars off to turn it into an anamorphic ratio DVD, I didn’t lose any of the subtitles, and I wanted to leave the originals in so as to stick with the “Definitive Collection LD-on-DVD” motif. Since they are still fully there on the disc, you can see them just fine on any 4:3 display and probably all 16:9 digital projectors or most specifically anything that doesn’t overscan the video. CRT-based 16:9 sets (projection or not) still have some overscan, however. Sooo, on these TVs you may not be able to see the subtitles at all, because erasing some of the black moved the subtitles out of the “safe-title” area as they call it. To compensate for that, I made it so you can turn on dvd-software subtitles of the same lines that will not appear in the overscan area, and in most DVDs should actually occupy the video frame itself. This way, those who can see the LD subtitles don’t have to worry about anything, and those who can not see the LD subtitles can turn on the software encoded DVD subtitles. The bottom line is, if you’re still using a display that overscans the video, you better hope it overscans the LD subtitles all the way or you might see a subtitle and a half. I suspect the people using analog 16:9 sets are in the minority, however. Most people probably watch on a PC monitor, a 4:3 tv, or 16:9 digital projection.

Glitches/Errors/Oddities:

 • After Selecting “Chapter Selection” there is no return to main button so you must select a chapter
 • Has double black bars so you’ll need to adjust the black level on your set (brightness) to make them kinda go away but then the picture also gets darker… so you may have to change the levels again for TV viewing.

The Extras discs

The 4 “Supplemental” discs that have been distributed with this set are NOT official, exclusive or limited to the “Cowclops” set.

Forum member Rowman was originally inspired to created these particular DVD’s to compliment the “EditDroid” set (the menus were made to match) BUT this set is a PERFECT addition to ANY set be it the COWCLOPS, EDITDROID, FARSIGHT or ISOMIX sets!!

I’ll make a thread that features ROWMAN’s discs in just a few days!!

That is weird it plays fine on my PC and I seeded these - If your VOB's are damaged that's gonna be on your end somehow - MAYBE you had to restart your PC while the torrent was running or something.........

In the "ISOMIX - Star Wars" folder there are the following folders: Dvd-rom, video_ts and another folder named "ISOMIX - Star Wars". This folder has two subfolder named dvd-rom and video_ts. The main vobfile in this video_ts folder is about 800mb and seems to be a failured transfer-attemt.

This is NOT on mine or anyone elses - It would seem that you started the download and then stopped it - THEN started it again and did not direct the torrent file right - I've done this with a few DL's

The "ISOMIX" DVDs (Released)
Time

I received these DVD’s in the Mail after a few emails with “Iso” - He gave me a rundown of the set and I then used that and some info from the discs themselfs to create the NFO that is include with the torrent download and that is listed below.

I don’t wanna claim any credit for the creation of this set. - If Iso wants to chime in here I’m sure he will - but for what it’s worth I’m really impressed with the overall presentation of this set. IMHO this is one of the the most complete sets with menus so if EXTRAS and PRESENTATION is your thing - THIS is the POODOO!

So on with the info…

The MeBeJedi STAR WARS: A New Hope (prototype VERSION???what 2 or 4?)

THIS is ONLY 1 opinion.................... (written at 5:30am)

First,
This is not a transfer of the Definitive Collection LD's but a transfer of the "Faces" set (which is said to be of better quality)

It's like watching the film for the first time at home again!

But this time we are treated with a 15 second THX LD trailer that is followed by a 27 second "Millenium Falcon" intro which navigates straight to the main menu. This basic menu layout that thankfully lacks all the "Drama and SPFX" that most new commercial DVD's all seem to be infected with, instead MeBeJedi delievers a neat, clean basic menu layout that features an immediate chapter selection screen (witty chapter names ). The discs menu structure lacks any needless title screens and selecting a chapter is simple enough and by simply pushing your down arrow button you can highlight the commentary link which then jumps you to the appropriate commentery page which feature a brief description of the commentary for that chapter.

Again these menus are very simple and you should have no problem moving through them at all ~

The Video Quality...

The Picture is awesome!!!

So far the colors are the BEST I've seen yet and DAMN the video just looks so clean.............

It's apparent that this was the result of a painstaking color correction process - the gamma levels have been adjusted, contrast and the color levels (was it done HuffyYUV) have all been restored. The color seems a bit red in some scenes but it is neither distracting or overdone this seems to be a side effect of the contrast changes, it does seem to be a bit overly white on the Tantive IV but like I said it's still one of thes best - IMHO

BUT as far as the general video quality... Under my DVD players zoom feature the quality holds up....
@ 2x zoom they still look very good @ 3x zoom you say damn this is a good transfer (good job on the the VBR and color correction is perfect!) - the colors really are that good and are even better then the actually laserdiscs IMHO -

The Audio Quality...

This is the best feature yet! - THE PCM track is better then the TR47 set - IF you crank up the TR47 set there is some noise in the audio stream.... THIS set has very little noise to no noise in the audio. It's a cleaner and smoother PCM audio track then ANY other set I've heard as it has the most natural sound.

2 audio formats/ 3 audio tracks

LPCM 2.0 @ 1536 kbps

WOW ~ This is a great sounding PCM and with the care that was taken in the conversion the matrixed surround track was reatained and BOY what beautiful playback you get.

AC3 Dolby Digital 5.1 - THE BEST 5.1 EVER ~ It really only sounds like a perfect conversion - there is NO fake rear steering just a WONDERFUL re-encode of the original PCM - CHEERS to you on that! (it's a little quite but most DD 5.1 is)

AC3 Dolby Digital 2.0 -
And the commentary is clean but a little loud compaired the rest of the video.

OVERALL -

I did not see or here any major or noticable errors in the video or the audio other then the contrast being a bit much - BUT that is me knit picking . There are no "missing" scenes and I do not recall even seeing a side flip or a disc change and from what I saw today

- the TR47 and the Dr. Gonzo set may well soon become things of the past.

UPDATE!

OKAY - Today I had a few friends over........

I did a blind test with 4 DVD versions of the OT. For the test I put in each of the DVD's and played the first 5 minutes of each film (as the first 5 minutes really do push the limits with all the white - so the colors really stand out on the scenes on the Tantive IV

I tested it on this gear -

Projector Playback -

Projection Panel: nView Spectra C - connected via SVGA
Video processer: ViewSonic NextVision N4 - connected via SVGA
Over Head Projector: 3M 9700 - 410w/4000 lumens

TV Playback -

TV: Apex 27" - connected via S-video
DVD 1: Mintek 1600
DVD 2: Apex AD-1500

Audio Playback

Decoded via PRO-LOGIC II + DTS NEO6

The PLII was the winner here ~ The DTS was a bit to quite and the conversion created extra noise

A/V Receiver 1: Onkyo TX-SR501 - connected via TOS-LINK
A/V Receiver 2: JVC RX-315 (used to power tactile transducers)
Front Speakers: NHT New Wave x2
Center Speakers: NHT New Wave
Rear Speakers: Kenwood KS-203 x2
Center Rear: Kenwood KS-203
Sub: KLH ASW10
Tactile Transducers: AURA "Bass Shaker" AST-1B-4 x2

All three films were tested on both my TV (first) then the Projector...
Again We watched the first 5-10 minutes and skipped around the disc for other scenes (Anchorhead, Vadrer+Ben's dual and the D-Star).

The end result was that everyone (all 5 of us including my wife ) picked the MeBeJedi set for BOTH audio and visual followed by the TR47 set then the Dr. Gonzo Set.
