well but suppose you are talking about reading Psalm 23 at someone’s funeral or Luke 2 at Christmas or some other passage at a wedding or other special occasion. Poetic might be good there, right?

Yeah, it would probably be appropriate then. I think we Catholics use the Jerusalem Bible for all readings in Canada, though, regardless of the occasion.

With a book like the Bible, though, which some people base their whole life on, it’s probably more important to be accurate than be poetic. Especially when the original text is pretty prosaic. That being said, poetic isn’t bad, but it isn’t always very useful for making fine theological distinctions.

btw, I am making a project of reading through the entire King James Version and New International Version of the Bible. I have read through Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Job, and am party through Deuteronomy in both Bibles.

Why Job? It’s not in the middle of the Pentateuch in the KJV, is it?

Bibles don’t rearrange by translation. Unless you count the inclusion of Apocryphal books in Catholic or Orthodox compilations.

Yeah, I know, which is why I thought it odd that he read Job right in the middle of the Pentateuch. My question was rhetorical, I guess.

This is idiotic.

One post prior you were replying directly to someone else. There was no reason assume you weren’t still engaged directly in the conversation taking place here as opposed to suddenly veering off into “everywhere else” territory in your next post.

But what should I have expected from someone who thinks “retarded” is a perfectly reasonable and not at all offensive insult?

Aren’t insults supposed to be offensive? 😉

darth_ender is one of my favourite members on this forum due to his good balance of humour and willingness to initiate and participate in serious discussions with a moderate and considered viewpoint.

Trident is a compassionate and magnanimous* guy, always concerned about other people and slow to judge. I wouldn’t have minded knowing him in real life, if we were closer to the same age.

I share Praetorian’s assessment of Possessed’s musical talent, and eagerly await his latest album (and the older stuff too). He can also be a lot of fun, and I enjoy his humour (as is the case for all people here with a sense of humour…).

I enjoy reading most of moviefreakedmind’s posts in the Politics thread, especially since I often agree with him. 😉 Plus, he’s a nice guy to have around in general.

Bingowings’ silliness is simply delightful, and his humorous threads are sorely missed from Off Topic. I’m rather pleased to note that he’s been popping buy more often lately (perhaps to escape the insanity of the General Star Wars discussion forum).

TV’s Frink is of course a prominent figure in these parts, and Off Topic wouldn’t be the same without him. And one can’t forget to mention his Ridiculous Wars, the third episode of which is taking far too long to complete. 😉

And then there’s RicOlie_2. His avatar says it all. 😉

*that word’s permanently ingrained in my mind–it seems one of the books I’m reading uses it every other page…

RicOlie2 is quite clever and driven…he has always been extremely responsible and well managed…moreso even than his father, if admissions must be made…

Thank you, that brought a little extra cheer to a dull day. 😃

Post Praetorian is witty, positive, and always good at cheering people up when they feel down. He has ready advice for nearly every situation (though I often don’t take advantage of that…), and has a wealth of knowledge which often makes for great conversations with him. There’s also no one else I’d rather watch a comedy with (he’s the only person I’ve ever seen literally ROFLing*). 😉

*Though I think that’s because there wasn’t room on the couch. 😉

How about a game of Japanese Chess, i.e. Shogi? Now playing Shogi4

So, since only Ric and Frink ever click on this thread, and since only Ric actually cares about the posts I make, I will address this post to RicOlie_2, my not so young friend. How old are you at this point? Time really flies! You must be like 17 now, eh?

Anyway, I finally broke down and purchased a real shogi set.

http://www.amazon.com/Study-Shogi-Japanese-Chess-Pieces/dp/B002ACUC4A?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I had a homemade crappy set with foamboard for the board and bakeable clay for pieces, with the intial for the name and an illustration of the movement. It was ugly but serviceable. Well, this new board is nice, and I’ve taught a patient on my floor in the hospital how to play. He really has enjoyed it. He also sucks big time.

It’d be fun to play you again sometime. I know I am busy, but one of these days I would like to try another game. Perhaps we can do it via PM to avoid clunking up Off Topic, or maybe we can even use the software to play in more real time. I’ve thought about it and I doubt it will cause an issue.

Nice to see you around! Not that I’ve been spending much time here lately either. I am indeed 17, which still doesn’t feel very old, but it’s getting too close to real life…

I’ve got a lot going on right now, but in a month or so, I’ll probably have a lot more time to spare.

If you dislike kid Anakin I suspect it’s because you dislike kids in general, rather than anything about his performance or dialogue.

This is probably my favorite (and most ignorant) statement.

Yeah, I found some of his dialogue cringeworthy the first time I watched it, and I was eight.

We can deal with rude people, it’s just the revolting conmen that everyone hates that should be banned if necessary. Darth Id, or Ghimli for example…

I agree. I don’t mind the occasional troll, but when they start trashing every conversation and nobody wants them around, it’d be nice to be able to give them the boot. If we have moderation, I would like it to be very light, just to keep the really bad trolls in line. Some trolls are fun, though. I just don’t like it when they start to take over.

I just realized that my post might sound critical of you, so sorry if it came across that way…

You may not be the only mod, but you’re the only one who’s really active, as far as I can tell. I should probably use the “report” button more often, though… I guess sometimes I subconsciously assume that the mods are aware of everything that’s going on.

Regardless, that still doesn’t solve the problem of Off Topic being entirely unmoderated. It used to be just fine, but we keep getting trolls and other idiots popping by and abusing that freedom.

Hang in there, Possessed. I can’t say it’ll solve all your problems, but breaking free from your addictions would probably help you at least somewhat. I wish it was an easier thing to do, but I really don’t think all that drink and pot is doing you any good.

I’m positive that these addictions are the reasons for the lack of fulfillment he described.

No, they aren’t. I don’t feel like getting in to all that at the moment though.

Your biggest problem is that you don’t think your addictions are a big enough problem to fight. There may be other stuff going on in your life as well, but substance abuse only worsens the problem, and is no doubt part of the reason you’re stuck in a rut.

I mean that as someone concerned for your wellbeing, not someone trying to lecture you.
