Ways to Do the Prequels with No Spoilers for the OT.
Time

I'm reposting something I originally posted in this thread:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Would-it-have-been-possible-to-make-the-PT-in-the-late-90s-early-00s-in-a-way-that-synced-up-with-the-OOT/topic/16670/

Many have said that it would have been impossible to have good prequels without showing the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of Darth Vader, but I disagree. It is true that there would have been less tragedy since we wouldn't know it was Anakin, but here's how I would have liked to see the PT done:

Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi are friends during the first movie. In it, the Republic falls during the Clone Wars and the Empire is formed. We learn details like the fact that Obi-Wan has had previous apprentices (but they are not named). One of Obi-Wan's former apprentices joins the Empire, so we suspect that he is Darth Vader until Episode V. Anakin marries a woman and she becomes pregnant.

In the second installment, Anakin's darkness is hinted at. About halfway through the movie, we discover that someone named Darth Vader is rising up through the ranks of the Imperial Army (or something of the sort). When we get to see Darth Vader, he is cloaked and hooded with his face hidden, so we don't find out who he really is. Anakin's darkness is hinted at throughout the movie (but is never so obvious that we can readily connect Darth Vader with Anakin). Latish in the movie, we see a hooded figure kneeling before a hologram, but we can't see the face of the person in the hologram (since he is the Emperor, and his reveal would be spoiled if his face was shown). We can't see the face of the hooded figure, and his name is not given, but he is instructed to kill Anakin Skywalker. Then comes the volcano battle. Anakin is defeated and killed (or so we are led to believe) by the hooded figure, who is masked throughout the whole thing. The movie ends.

In the third movie, Darth Vader is still hooded and cloaked the same way as before, but he now has a mask that is reminiscent of the mask we see in the OT. Darth Vader begins hunting down the remnants of the Jedi order. At some point, he duels Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan manages to dismember Darth Vader's right arm and escape. He then visits Anakin's wife on Alderaan, who has given birth since the first movie. She entrusts Obi-Wan with the care of her son (she has had twins and doesn't want to give them both up, but we don't learn this until ROTJ). Obi-Wan is by this point the last of the Jedi  besides his former master, whom we next see Obi-Wan speaking to on a swamp planet, though his master is hidden from sight. Obi-Wan tells him that Darth Vader's fighting style is familiar. His old master tells him to hide away on a remote planet until the time is right. We see a spaceship heading towards a desert planet and the movie ends.

It could have been done, it just wasn't....

Would it have been possible to make the PT (in the late 90's / early 00's) in a way that synced up with the OOT?

A way to do the fall of Anakin without spoiling the surprise in the OT is to have him become a double agent of sorts. Here's what I mean:

Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi are friends during the first movie. In it, the Republic falls during the Clone Wars and the Empire is formed. We learn details like the fact that Obi-Wan has had previous apprentices (but they are not named). Flaws, plotholes, and "could-have-been-done-betters" in the OT (alternate plot points especially welcome)

Hello everyone :)

Although I like all SW movies, I understand that there are quite few head scratching parts. Surprisingly there are more of them in OT for me than PT. Anyway here's my personal list (sorry if I missed the explanations):

Thanks for sharing. I've never thought of some of these. Others are pretty common, but very true. There are some I don't think are errors, or were fine as they were, and I've commented on those.

*NEW HOPE:*

[snip] Also what were other troopers doing while Obi-Wan was Force persuading one of them? Just standing without finding anything suspicious. Ok.

Presumably Obi-Wan was able to extend his mind trick to all of them.

-Why did Solo and Luke throw out Stormtroopers armor, their disguise? Because it stinks after trash? After trash compactor all their clothes should stink. Go to bathroom (should be on DS), wash, there you have some disguise back.

If I'm not mistaken, they took their helmets off in the prison block, and weren't able to bring them with them when they dove into the trash compactor. Not to mention that Leia didn't have a disguise, nor did Chewie.

-Leia believes that the Empire is tracking Falcon, so... she goes right to the hidden rebel base instead of meeting with an agent, search for bugs, or figure out any other way to send the plans.

This one has a couple explanations, but none of them are satisfactory.

-Obi-Wan said that Jedi were using swords as a weapon. Sword against gun? We see how it works in Prequels, and it worked ok when Luke was fighting bunch of Jabba's people, but they weren't too efficient (even Boba, who was wasted in an extremely stupid way), or one trooper, but what if there are ten enemies with guns?

Well, they do have the power of the Force. I imagine that that helps them a bit.

EMPIRE STRIKES BACK:

-Why empire is using walkers on a flat surface? They can be good on bad ways, with obstacles, but flat surface? Also they can be defeated by a strong rope. (But hey, they look cool.)

Why not? It's a faster way to transport the troops, while keeping them sheltered. I don't know why they didn't just use something that could fly though.

-Yoda is an extremely powerful Jedi, but won't take part in war due to... what? He could use Force in battles, stopping entire ships. Too old? Body doesn't matter, right? Damn, even in prequels Yoda told his old body to f-off and increased it's strength for a short time with a Force to fight. But he won't fught the Empire anymore because... destiny?

He's a pacifist. Besides, he knows that even he isn't powerful enough to defeat the Empire. Remember, at 900 years old, he's probably pretty patient.

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place

Then really try to look on the bright side, Possessed. Get yourself a hobby or something you can really get into to make life seem better. Maybe join some community group or something and make some friends. You sound like you need them now more than ever. Rather than blaming yourself or examining your mental state, however bad it may be, just work on improving yourself. Set some goals and work towards them so that you're thinking about the future and not getting stuck on the present and past.

What counts most in life is the journey. There are ups and downs in everyone's life, and even if the downs are farther down than most people's, keep on going and wait for an up. Things won't get better if you don't try to look at the positive and try to make things better (I know there isn't much you can do about your family situation, but you can still look at the positives and focus on something else to take your mind off that for a bit). I really don't know you well enough to give good specific advice, but don't give up so early in life.

I'll add you to my prayers for your mother and grandfather.

The Phantom Menace 15th Anniversary
Time

Part of the magic of Star Wars was that it was enjoyable at all ages. The prequels didn't have that. TPM was a kids' movie, AOTR was less of a kids' movie, but it isn't very appealing to adults either. ROTS wasn't appropriate for young children, and it was a mediocre film from an adult perspective.

ANH, ESB, and ROTJ, on the other hand, were/are enjoyable for everybody.

Seriously, after the conversation that took place here, it can hardly be coincidence that two individuals used that same slur in this thread.  Clearly they are homoinsectophobes!

 LOL...well over six months after.

EDIT: Whoa, C3PS was online in November? I thought he was long gone by the time I started visiting Off Topic.

Blu-Ray Of Unaltered Original Trilogy Rumour

fishmanlee said:

I think he is saying (and it is hard to know if that really is his point) that he feels that when Adywan finishes his revisited trilogy, that will be his definitive version of the OT.

That's how I understood it as well. And the same goes for me--once Adywan is done ESB:R, that will be my definitive version. The same goes for ROTJ:R and ANH:R:HD. I can't speak for the prequel trilogy yet, but his will probably replace the originals unless he isn't able to finish them in the end.

If we watch them in order... ...
Time

^To the first one:

Why does this bother people? Droids are likely mass produced, like cars are in our galaxy, so it is no less plausible for Owen and Beru to not recognize C-3PO (who looks different in Episode IV than in Episode II anyway) and R2-D2 (who is only one of who-knows-how-many astromech droids, since we see at least a dozen in the prequels) than it is for a person to recognize a re-painted truck they once owned, and a car that belonged to someone who visited the neighbours.

Not necessarily. The viewer learns that Jedi can do mind tricks. Learning about the Jedi as you go along becomes part of the fun.

As for some of the other things: I watched the movies in chronological order (1-6) when I first saw them, and--you're right about just about everything. I don't think Jabba in TPM doesn't make sense, it just ruins his reveal in Episode VI (which is further ruined by his SE appearance).

JJ announced a donation/contest to get a walk-on role in VII, from the (I'm assuming) Tattooine set.

Some practical effects on display behind him.

If anyone from here gets in the movie, be sure to let us know...

And by the way, I did make a separate thread for this kind of thing. :\
