I love it. š
I love it. š
Regarding the OP, thatās exactly how I viewed canon back when I cared, before the EU was demoted to Legends. You donāt need a big corporation to tell you how to view canon. Itās all up to you.
The way I thought of it was that all the Star Wars books and movies are ābased on real eventsāāthat is, theyāre all retellings of what āactuallyā happened, so some of them might stray more from the ātruthā than others, or might introduce new elements, or be merely āinspiredā by a true story. Thus, Jar Jar in the prequels is simply an interpretation of the real Jar Jar, and the sequence of events was perhaps modified. That left me free to imagine things as āreallyā being however I wanted them to be.
Iād rather not see continuous universe shrinking. Maybe one or two of those bounty hunters, but weāve already seen so much of them in the Clone Wars that Iād prefer that they were only brought into the show if it really makes sense for them to be there. Too many characters seem to show up in these shows just for the sake of being there, without it really contributing to the plot.
Iām kind of glad it didnāt make it into the film, TBH. It would likely have looked quite dated compared to everything else.
Thereās about three memes in this entire thread. The rest are just pictures with text. I think yāall are too old for the Internet. š
Thatās a good point. They definitely have overlap, but they approach storytelling from different angles.
Great post and thread! Itās given me a new appreciation for Star Wars, and a greater appreciation for the continuity of the ST and PT with the OT, even if I still donāt like either.
Good food for thought. I feel the Surrealist aspects of Star Wars are lost on most viewers. With so much sci-fi being derivative of Star Wars, it becomes normalized.
Yes, thereās a great irony in the fact that Star Wars, which started with a movie so weird that most studios rejected it, is now virtually the definition of mainstream. Few of the copycat films over the last four decades have understood what made Star Wars work. Thereās been a lot of really good sci-fi inspired by the aesthetic and technical achievements of Star Wars, but not the storytelling āphilosophyā it used, at least not in many other big budget mainstream films.
Very true. A similar thing happened with the Lord of the Rings. It sparked a new era of copycat fantasy books, but none of them get what made LOTR so great. I find it really interesting that you mention LOTR a few times in connection with Star Wars, because what drew people to them was quite similar I think:
Unfortunately, people just try to copy the aliens and spaceships (in SW), or the different races and the magic (in LOTR), and miss almost everything that actually makes these films/books so appealing. Or their imitation suffers from a failure to write a good plot and they rely too heavily on the above-mentioned elements.
I definitely think that the PT and/or Clone Wars (or at least the hype for them) was responsible for getting younger generations interested in Star Wars. I know I probably wouldnāt have taken the interest in the OT that I did were it not for newer content.
Yeah, I think it could do without all the little rooms in the central space. Itās not what makes logical sense for a ancient temple-like building.
Iāve always loved the book that thatās from. Wish I had it.
Thanks! I think Iāll have time to watch them all though before the next season of the Mandalorian comes out. Iām a somewhat obsessive completionist, so I have trouble skipping over things⦠Very cool poster though.
I didnāt stop, I just havenāt finished catching up! I had only just started season 2 a year ago. I didnāt have a way of watching anything beyond the first season till I got Disney+.
I agree that season 2 in general improved on the strengths of the first series, though Iāll conceed some of the new faces or references to the lore could became a bit overwhelming for those who hadnāt kept up with all of the Star Wars content (particularly Filoniās previous animated works). One of the things I liked the most about season 1 was that even someone who grasps only the basic stuff about SW could enjoy the series. Season 2 isnāt as newcomer-friendly in that regard. However, now that the parallel spin-offs (Boba, Ahsoka, etc.) have been properly set-up, the upcoming third season can go back to a more self-contained narrative, even if itās bigger in scale.
I donāt think itās confusing for newcomers, just less exciting. I havenāt seen seasons 5-7 of the Clone Wars, so Bo-Katan was just a new character for me, and it worked. And I donāt really know what Ahsokaās been up to since season 4, aside from the occasional spoiler Iāve had the misfortune to read recently.
Ha, yeah, pretty much. Once more people started coming West, the mods understandably wanted things to be a bit tamer.
Yeah, Duracell was the glue keeping Off-Topic together. With him gone, I doubt many people will want to post here. Itās a shame, but I understand why it happened.
I think the glue holding Off Topic together was Frink (just by the sheer volume and hilarity of his posts), but he joined the āabuse the guy who made this site possibleā bandwagon, unfortunately. Duracell was the just the last of a handful of members who were major contributors to Off Topic, all of whom have now been banned or rarely post anymore.
The thing is, Off Topic had a certain flavour unique to the Internet, but when it became moderated and the rules changed, the kind of people it had attracted in the past and which had made it so much fun also became the kind of people who didnāt like or disregarded the new rules. And then the Politics thread became a catalyst for a personal conflict, which resulted in the Off Topic contributors being decimated, and which has never really ended (the only thing ending it is everyone on one side getting banned for keeping it up).
Glad to see youāre back, Handman.
Ah. Well, welcome back. š
Let me guess, in the next few days Spuffure is going to be posting here again. Itās like the episode of Seinfeld where Elaine kept breaking up and getting back together with the same guy.
The āignore this postā at the bottom makes me think heās already given up on giving up on this forum.
They would never admit fault and retcon anything, but Clone Wars sets a precedent for additional media that normalises and patches over mistakes for an existing trilogy over time.
This seems more likely to me. A future animated series could feature Luke, Leia, and Han, but be set closer to the OT and have more freedom to do something different.
Or he could be in a throne room chair a la ROTJ, but with the chair facing away from the viewers, giving him a scene without actually showing him.
Now we have the mods editing and now removing comments that poked holes in their side of the story (and again, mine was simply proposing a simple way to get to the bottom of it all), for frankly very dubious reasons, itās shady as hell and makes me lose a lot of sympathy for them. Kind of makes me think that Juniorās comment was onto somethingā¦
As Iāve said before, Iāve been on this forum a heck of a long time. Through thick and thin and some of the worst times in my life, this forum was often my refuge. Accepting the moderator gig was a way to give back to this crazy wonderful place. If people think Iām being shady or dishonest now, maybe I should retire? What good am I as a mod if I donāt have your trust?
I had just emerged from a lengthy personal crisis days before the pandemic started, and was stressed and worn out already. Iāve already planned to take a sabbatical when I can finally get my damned eye surgery. The pandemic and insurance shenanigans have played hell with that.Something Iāll have to ponder for a while.
Speaking for myself, youāre one of the mods Iāve appreciated the most. I donāt think any of the issues are with you.
Dom, Frinkās perma-ban was for ācontinued derailing threads / and spread unrelated forum drama across the site - despite multiple previous requests & warnings not to do so, and then followed by temporary bans.ā
This was after a temp-ban a few weeks earlier for ārepeated derailing of threads, flaming/baiting, personal attacks etc⦠despite multiple requests, PMs, and warnings not to continueā.
Before this, there were other similar issues over a considerable length of time with Frink - with him even admitting he had derailed threads on here.
Haha, the constant derailing of threads was my favourite part about this place. š But to each their own.
Rather than regurgitate the Empire in the sequel trilogy and The Mandalorian, they should have invented a brand-new enemy.
Additionally, I wish Stormtroopers would actually pose a threat rather than be disposable fodder ala the putty patrol in Power Rangers. Itās a wonder theyāve conquered anything at all.
For the sequel trilogy, I agree. For The Mandalorian, not so much. It makes perfect sense given the time period of the series.
LOL, I didnāt pay any attention to this announcement to begin with because I thought it was literally just a book. š Now I understand why thereās an active thread about itā¦
Yeah, pretty much all the people I used to interact with have either been banned or left for other reasons. Itās a completely different community than the one I joined. Off Topic is dead. The fan edit that got me interested in this site to begin with is being created by a now-banned member as well.
The only thing that brought me back here recently is PMs. š
