STAR WARS DVD Producer Van Ling answers the tough questions!
Time
Bizz- I said pretty much that exact same thing a week or three ago, and the thread got maybe 4 responses.

Nobody wants to just be civil and say "I want the movies." They all seem more comfortable throwing a fit and claiming they deserve the movies, (which may be true in the end, but the temper tantrum probably isn't going to get much), and thus the Lucas bashing threads drag on for days and weeks on end.

EDIT: Alright, it just occured to me that I need to clarify a bit and state that by "nobody", I'm being a little harsh. There are, in fact, a few well balanced folks around here who really don't give a crap one way or another what somebody else likes, or what they feel anybody owes them, and keep everything cool, calm and civil. They just want the original version in a non-degrading format, and don't care what the super-duper-special-extra-bigbig-funtime-edition that Lucas may or may not be working on at any given moment contains, cause they realize that it's not really worth that much bitching. Seriously, for the most part people around here are pretty cool.

I was about to say something about all of us stealing and destroying the world's VHS players myself! I've been waiting for VHS to die for a while... I think the general push towards DVD has done nothing but good for movie buffs thus far, and if this holds true then the push will be even better.

Zion- Actually, the fact that something as fundemental as the back button is not working probably would constitute a valid complaint, regardless of what browser you're using (*heh*heh*)... the IE6 comment is mostly in regards to the fact that it's all free and I'm just doing what i can with the limited abilities of a free site and my existing software. Sorry man, I'm using the only HTML editor I have... been meaning to bootleg Dreamweaver or something, but for now I'm stuck with FrontPage (icky poo, I know). So thanks for the heads up on that one! Also, I think that it could possibly be Tripod's fault, since I've been having trouble getting the "open link in new window" setting to work consistantly, and this is the first time that's ever happened.

As for what covers you're looking to submit, the catagories that are there so far are mostly just placeholders until I get more content. I'm looking to make it a site for just about ANY Star Wars covers... kinda like CDCovers.com, only more focused. So by all means, PM me the details!

GL: I don't know. I mean, when VHS becomes obsolete it will probably get released on DVD, I imagine. But I'm not going to spend the effort to restore them (to) what I consider to be the real film.

This statement made my heart flutter. Literally. I'm sure Sam_Lu will be in here momentarily, childishly ripping into Lucas for... whatever... but I don't care if Lucas is agreeing with us or just caving in. I want those movies on DVD (nice and official like) and any realistic hope of getting them is a good thing.

And yes, the man does have fabulous hair.

Alright, I think I just came up with a solution... anybody who wants their covers hosted, needs to upload them to some sort of image hosting site (possibilities listed below), and then PM or e-mail me the url (my addy will be up on the site shortly).

I'll make the thumbnails as per what fits my site's scheme, and tag it with the link, so we'll still have a central site for finding everything, and my workload for maintenance will be cut down to 10% or so, making this all go a thousand times faster. Not to mention I'll actually be able to make this work using free web hosting. Boo yaa.

FYI, I'm looking for DVD covers, labels, chapter inserts and even standard CD case inserts (sometimes it's handier that way) for everything from OT-transfers to re-edits. Get them images hosted and submitted folks!

...Bush is an idiot.

I don't think I've ever seen somebody meander about in their speech so much, nor have I seen anybody, much less the leader of the free world, have so little a grasp of what's going on in their own back yards. Quite frankly, I was amazed at how in depth Kerry's responses were, quoting figures and displaying a general interest in the questions, as where Bush seemed to be capable of little more than repeating the same non-sensical statement over and over and failing to address the majority of the questions posed to him.

Let's hope Kerry wins this one, otherwise I'm taking my newborn and hightailing it to... to... fuck, I don't know. Antarctica or something.

EDIT: Oh, and since I have no doubt that this will turn into a balls-to-the-wall debate in about 2 hours, thus dragging this thread out for weeks on end, I think it should be noted that this was originally posted just moments after the September 30th Presidential debates, wherein Kerry completely slaughtered Bush on damn near every issue through the use of... well, through the use of actually answering the questions in the first place.

Alright, I've gone over a few technical details and realized that this site can't work as a freebie, or at least that the bandwidth and storage space involved can only work if a lot of the files to be hosted are compressed down to 1/3rd their current sizes (just look at the detail I had to kill on my covers to get them below 1meg).

So what I've decided is that maybe I can break everything down into zip files, grouped by designer or version or something, and have the site itself act as a thumbnail gallery, with a bunch of smallish Torrent links to get the covers themselves.

The goal is to have everything all in one place, easily navigatable, and avoiding the trouble of having to browse through 50+ pages of off-tangent messages to find anything.

Anybody who has suggestions should offer them now. Or if anybody would like to come forward with the URL of that image hosting site I read about in passing a few days ago (and promptly forgot), the one that hosts images bigger than 1 meg, that would probably solve all the problems right there.

Thanks guys!

And that, MagFan, is why I love you.

I hate to think of these boards having some heavy fisted moderation like many other places I've been to, but the personal attacks on people simply because they do/don't hate Lucas or do/don't hate the SE's or PT has been reaching insane proportions.

Thanks man. It's still kinda oogly, 'cause I've been preoccupied today (man, they were right when they said that the TR47s look better when you actually burn them to DVD-r and watch 'em on a TV...), but I'm working on it. Slowly but surely.

Jesus, I wish I didn't have to go through a banner-laden freebie site for this shit though. Maybe some day I'll drop the $100 or so and get my own webspace.

Workin' on that site right now. Like I said, if anyone want's their covers hosted, just PM me.

After I get this initial layout done, getting covers up will be a snap.

(*heh*heh* I woulda had this done HOURS ago, but my double layer DVD burner showed up around noon... been playing with my new toy for a while. )

UPDATE: Alright suckas... it's up. All I need now is some cover submissions. I'll be going over this thread throughout the night and trying to compile a folder full of covers, but I'd prefer submissions directly from the designers themselves so I can make sure everyone gets the proper credit. Just PM me... like I've previously stated.

No need to swear tlbauerle. *har*har*

And what's wrong with us talking about what-ifs? At least it's not another "fanboy this/fanboy that" thread.

And nothing in the realm of ideas can be "the lowest common denominator", because at least it shows we're using our brains for something, regardless of how moot the point may be, which will always raise the concept of an idea at least a notch above many things.

People on this board really need to stop jumping down peoples throats for stupid shit.

Thanks Buddy-X.

Though, to be honest I don't think we'll be seeing an end to the inane Lucas-bashing and fanboy-tagging anytime soon, with that being all Sam_Lu seems to be able to talk about.

The damn thing was too big to use in its entirety for my sig...

"This is a site populated by militant movie buffs, sad pathetic little bastards living in their parent's basement, downloading scripts and what they think is inside information about movies and actors they claim to despise, yet can't stop discussing. This is where you would go if you wanted to hear some wanna-be, frustrated filmmaker mouth off with his two-bit, penny-ante, armchair-director's opinions about how he could have really made a better Episode I."

Crap in a hat...

Alright folks, last night (I think) I read somebody say something about there being two places to host images, ImageShack, which does smaller images, and some other site, which does the larger ones.

But I can't find the thread or the post, and I can't remember the name of the site. If anybody remembers, or knows of a good freebie large image hosting site, please lemme know. I'm trying to get this site thrown together.

I should have something available later today. I'm just gonna combine a number of freebie web services to get the job done, and we should have a site devoted to covers shortly (having the day off rocks).

Anybody want your covers hosted? Then PM me and I'll jet you back a list of required info (size, dimensions and such) and a contact address, since I'm gonna try to lay out the site to be as dial-up friendly as possible.

A laserdisc to DVD forum?

Funny, I've been working on a website to do this very same thing. A preservation specific site, for tech info, DVD info and even a repository of covers, and I was trying to get Rik in on it, but I can never catch him online these days. I was gonna ask if you wanted in on it as well, since you're working on that new set.

The bonus of having it be its own page is the fact that we can break things down into sections, like having a cover gallery, and we don't have to worry about the off-topic BS that commonly plagues message boards.

I was even planning a page for DIYers, where everybody who has done a set gives their equipment set-ups and how-tos. Since none of us are in this for profit (right?!? ) and it could help any future transfers get better and better.

Tell me what you think.
