TITANIC 35mm Preservation! (a WIP)

Reel2 Preview:

To those of you in the east coast of the USA who are interested, there is a “free” 35mm screening of the film at New York City’s School of the Visual Arts Theatre.
Time: Sat, September 16, 2017, 7:30 PM – 11:30 PM EDT

That’s awesome - a FREE event!! If you go let me know how the projection compares to the scan, I’m particularly interested in the dark details and the colour temperature. I saw a Fox print recently that appears to show more details in the shadow than the US print, it could be that acetate-base prints have more shadow detail over polyester. Or it could be that the preview file doesn’t do full justice to the scan itself.

My name’s Dale and I’ve literally just signed up on OT.com, so I could comment and join in on this discussion about this TITANIC preservation project - what a bloody marvelous project it is! I’ve just this evening seen the preview video, and cannot get over how fantastic it looks.

Glad to have you here.

Would it be possible to release an uncleaned, raw version as well?

The release will have pretty minimum work done.

I’ve been collecting individual 35mm film cells from this release (pre-2012) for years, 5 frames per strip, so it’d be a TREAT to see this entire film released as a fan preservation project, with colour corrections and cleaning up done to match the actual physical film frame colours.

I’d rather you didn’t buy film strips from cutters as they destroy prints. A lot of them come from trailers and not prints (thankfully), but I would love to be able to scan the July-release trailer if we can find one. 😃

Info: 35mm prints coming up for sale...
Time

Han Frugrohl said:

I post this just as an update if someone is interesred. I found that the same eBay user that’s auctioning BATMAN also has all this prints for sale:

BATMAN (1989)

Current eBay listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/253055833635

He’s dropped the price of Batman down to $800 with free shipping. I don’t think it will last much longer unsold at that price. If you guys want to scan the film I suggest buying that print. This film has been talked about for a while, and you’re far better off spending a little extra on a good print. Scanning will be about $650 if there’s interest.

The last prints of Batman I saw come up for sale on eBay all sold for around $800 and weren’t in “like new” condition. Based on that I would expect you will get most or maybe all of the purchase price back on sale of the print.

If there’s interest in buying the print send me a message. I can’t put money into it as I’m concentrated on Disney, we need one person who wants to put up the $800 or two people to go in 400 each.

Idea & Info: The Mummy (1999) 35mm Feature Film SCOPE print - on ebay - any interest?
Time

Yeah, focus on stuff you want to do Ray. The Mummy wouldn’t be my first choice for a scanning project, but I don’t feel the need to tell everyone that - what projects people want to create is up to them. We have access to some very rare prints if you want to scan them, as I mentioned in the other thread. 😃

Walt Disney Classics - 4K (donations sought) (several WIPs)
Time

Just to remind people, the IB technicolor prints I have access to: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp, and yes 20,000 Leagues if there’s interest in that are all in excellent condition. We won’t find them in better condition to scan.

This is why I need help, I don’t want to loose the opportunity to scan prints in excellent condition. They will need very little digital clean up for release. If we loose an opportunity like this we could spend years looking for prints in similar condition.

And I also need more hard drives, I haven’t spent any donated money on hard drives, it’s all been used on scanning costs. If anyone wants to help with storage, I need to get 2x WD Gold 6TB as soon as I can afford it (price is $253 ea) plus another external 8TB sometime ($200).

Right, that’s why I told you we can scan 20,000 Leagues if you come up with the scanning fee. There’s lots of films that can be scanned if someone pays for it, but it’s not going to automatically happen.

I’m focused at the moment on Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty (both IB Tech). I may also have an opportunity for Lady and the Tramp on IB Tech as well. If anyone is interested in helping funding is desperately needed!! Soupdrinker has already been an amazing help, as have a few other people. 😃

IB Tech prints are the closest to a negative that we can access. They are far superior to LPP, and also show improvements over other stocks of their era.

Okay guys, I’m currently working on getting a number of IB Tech Disney prints scanned at 4K. IB Tech prints will be much better quality than Kodak prints, especially LPP prints. At the moment I’m getting choked by funding unfortunately - it’s difficult to find prints in good condition given their age. I need to buy at least one new hard drive soon, and pay some other bills associated with all this stuff. If anyone can help out please message me there are some opportunities I don’t want to see lost. 😃

We may also have the opportunity to scan at least one IB Tech print in Europe on an Arri 6K soon as well.

James Bond - The Living Daylights - 35mm (Released)
Time

This is going to be a really great project! For those not as film-savvy, this is a UK print on Fujifilm. It’ll have a different look to the US prints that were on Kodak LPP. Just like Star Wars on Technicolor looked different to Star Wars on Kodak, and Titanic on acetate looks different to Titanic on polyester. What a treat this will be to have the domestic UK version preserved!

Here is the same video posted in the OP (made up of three shot clips joined together) from a projection of the print, but with no flicker reduction etc as applied to the one uploaded by Williarob:

Cinderella (1950) 35mm Preservation opportunity! (a WIP)
Time

We have the opportunity to borrow and scan a Cinderella IB Technicolor print in the US. The cost of scanning this is $370. Total scanning costs are about $600. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you guys that’s a bargain, we don’t have to purchase, rent, or even ship the print.

And, the print is in EXCELLENT CONDITION. Probably better condition than my print. And, unlike mine, it can be scanned as soon as NEXT WEEK!

As some of you know I have a print as well and it can be scanned in the future. But this is a limited opportunity to get a print that’s in top condition scanned, and that may end up making scanning mine (which will cost more) unnecessary.

And more great news, after this is scanned we can rent Lady and the Tramp from the same source for scanning. And after that is scanned we can rent Sleeping Beauty too. And more!

Begin your pledges/donations, please!

Donations so far: $550 / 600

An exclusive early release will be made available to donors, hopefully followed by a wider “myspleen” release at some point later this year/early next year.

Short test scan done on the first couple of minutes of Reel 1:

It’s heavily compressed, but hopefully shows the condition the print is in. Remember that heads and tails of reels are where most of the wear usually is.

Screenshots:

Cinderella is a two-phase project. Only donors will be given access to the phase 1 release.

Phase 1:

  • The borrowed print will be scanned.
  • Early access release will be made available exclusively to donors.

Phase 2:

  • My print will be scanned.
  • Wider release on Myspleen.

Thanks to Soupdrinker0 the scan for Titanic is fully funded! Of course doesn’t doesn’t cover other expenses like postage or hard drives, etc, but I’m really grateful to the forum and all involved.

Thanks to everyone who donated, but especially to alexp120 and Soupdrinker who between them covered 90% of the scan cost!

You can still donate if you wish to help with the other costs, so from this point on donations can be directed to me rather than cpalmer2k. A very special thanks also to cpalmer2k for agreeing to handle the scanning funds. You can also donate to my other projects and that will be really appreciated.

I will have a new video up today showing new footage.

The scan is progressing, we have so far the first three reels scanned, and hopefully the other seven will be done very soon.
