The Phantom Menace on 35mm (* unfinished project *)
Time

Unfortunately we need internal drives to cover the storage. The scanner records straight to them. So that’s our first obstacle! We don’t need that space permanently though, theoretically we can compress it down to whatever size we want after we get the scan back… but if we want it triple-flashed it has to be delivered raw. I hope that makes sense! 😛 This won’t be a cheap project if it goes ahead. 😃

UPDATE 2019

This project is dead. I’m very sorry to all who donated. We will need to find a new print and start a new project for TPM 35mm to happen. Everything below is archived for transparency.

(old) Update: Scanning will go ahead (YAY!) If this project interests you please send a donation to poita, even a small donation is appreciated (see below). The full cost of this project will be around $2500+.

How to donate?

  1. Poita’s PayPal email address is here, or use the paypal.me/poit link.
  2. You can also send bitcoin or mine bitcoin (watch your electricity bill if you mine it). Address: 13QDjXjt7w7BFiQc4Q7wpRGPtYKYchnm8x

Donation deadline and amounts

  • You can donate now, or next month, or even in the new year. Poita will continue accepting donations until further notice. There is no formal deadline on donations themselves.
  • Every amount helps and is appreciated:

Honestly, ever dollar helps, and it doubles as an easy gauge as to whether people really want a project, or if they would just ‘like’ to see it.
That really goes for anyone’s projects, a buck or two or five is always appreciated, as much for the sentiment as for the offset of costs. A lot of people who work on these various projects put hundreds or even thousands of hours of their free time into making them happen, call in favours, take risks and spend more of their own money than is even vaguely sensible.
When you see people chip in anything to help, it really, well, helps. There have been many times sitting alone at 3am that you feel like giving up, looking at an A/B roll of frame #114003 for glitches you may have missed, or logging a missing frame, and then you get a ping with a message that someone in another timezone on the other side of the planet has donated five bucks, and an accompanying message that the movie held a special place in their life for their own special reasons, and you get a second wind - it keeps you going, and reminds you of your own passion for this stuff, and you keep plugging away it.

  • If you’ve already donated you can of course feel free to donate again if you want to.
  • The above info on donations is also relevant to all of poita’s projects, including the SE scanning.

Trailer

Here is a 35mm Trailer scan, this is Jetrell Fo’s trailer and he very kindly allowed me to share it:

There is also a different scan of the same trailer shared by Williarob here.

Project Info

You may have noticed in poita’s thread poita has the opportunity to scan the SE Trilogy in 4K triple-flashed with a damage matte. There is also a Phantom Menace print available that can be scanned at the same facility. To be scanned triple-flashed with damage matte would require 21TB of storage, scanned single-flashed can be done with 4TB. The prints (Phantom Menace and the SEs) and the scanner are only available for a short window, so it’s now or never if we wish to get this scanned. It is about $400 to ship the print (there’s also a rental charge).

I have no idea how “rare” the trailer is (by that I would mean its actual usage in Cinemas I suppose), but I can say that our scanner owns it and scanned it for us and you can thank cpalmer2k for paying for the scan (not overly expensive for a trailer, but still an expense and generous of him to do so). It’s a pity it’s the only trailer we had access to, I’d love to do some more. 😃

I gave it a very quick colour correction in the direction of the projected print colours which are warmer than the scan (and in some places you see faces turn piss-yellow). I don’t plan to push the yellows it as far as it actually appears when projected, I don’t think people would accept that, but maybe a tad warmer than what you’re seeing in the Trailer.

Help Wanted: Jurassic Park III - 35mm print... (seeking donations)

I guess I don’t poke in this subforum very often. JP3 seemed like an odd enough choice that I took a closer look. I still don’t get why we’re preserving everything, but if the mods don’t have a problem with it, by all means, continue.

Given your username, why not back the Living Daylights project?

Is there something wrong with the existing legal official release?

That’s a fair enough question, I can’t comment personally on the Bluray, but we do know that the original Jurassic Park was completely f*cked with… and JP3 is a less silly then the other sequels (the T-Rex in San Diego for example is unforgivable… it doesn’t even make sense that InGen made multiple tyrannosauruses in the first place when they only wanted one for their park).

Info & Advice Wanted: Someone Re-uploading my Videos to youtube

Of course, I want to report him and have the videos removed, but I have to affirm, “UNDER PENALTY OF PURGURY: I am authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed,” which leads me to the question: do comparison videos meet that requirement, counted as transformative works that allow me to even place the claim to begin with?

Probably not, and it appears that you rescinded any rights you may have had by putting this in the description:

“I own nothing.”

What you need to do is find a cinema that still does 35mm (or is interested in doing 35mm) and then get them to book the film. It wouldn’t be hard to convince them to book Titanic as it ticks all the right boxes: it’s a family film (both kids and adults can enjoy it), it’s a good quality film being made in the later 90’s compared to lacklustre 80’s prints, it’s a popular movie that people love. A good place to start would be your local film and tv archive, find out from them if there are any local cinemas they loan or hire prints to for exhibition and then go from there.

Cinderella (1950) 35mm Preservation opportunity! (a WIP)
Time

Okay, project update. To begin, here is a new video:

All donors have been sent previews of the full reels.

After reviewing the condition of this print I’ve returned to the original plan. While the print is in excellent overall condition, there are some damaged sections that will need to be replaced by scanning my print at a later time. This includes both video where up to entire scenes are missing, and audio where there is severe dropout. What this means is that there will not be a public release until I get the second print scanned in the future. Only donors will get a release from this print. It is not too late to donate, so get in contact if you are interested in donating to this project!

Yes what I’m saying is the scan needs to be adjusted to match how the projected print looks. When I saw the film projected for example most/all of the skies in the outdoor daytime scenes are a warm white, not grey/blue.

Whereabouts do you live? If you can see a screening on film you’ll see what I’m talking about. I would expect there to be more screenings of Titanic this year as it’s the 20th anniversary of the film.

Reel2 Preview:

alexp120 said:

To those of you in the east coast of the USA who are interested, there is a “free” 35mm screening of the film at New York City’s School of the Visual Arts Theatre.
Time: Sat, September 16, 2017, 7:30 PM – 11:30 PM EDT

That’s awesome - a FREE event!! If you go let me know how the projection compares to the scan, I’m particularly interested in the dark details and the colour temperature. I saw a Fox print recently that appears to show more details in the shadow than the US print, it could be that acetate-base prints have more shadow detail over polyester. Or it could be that the preview file doesn’t do full justice to the scan itself.

My name’s Dale and I’ve literally just signed up on OT.com, so I could comment and join in on this discussion about this TITANIC preservation project - what a bloody marvelous project it is! I’ve just this evening seen the preview video, and cannot get over how fantastic it looks.

Glad to have you here.

Would it be possible to release an uncleaned, raw version as well?

The release will have pretty minimum work done.

I’ve been collecting individual 35mm film cells from this release (pre-2012) for years, 5 frames per strip, so it’d be a TREAT to see this entire film released as a fan preservation project, with colour corrections and cleaning up done to match the actual physical film frame colours.

I’d rather you didn’t buy film strips from cutters as they destroy prints. A lot of them come from trailers and not prints (thankfully), but I would love to be able to scan the July-release trailer if we can find one. 😃
