The Phantom Menace on 35mm (* unfinished project *)

That is a shame. You wouldnt think film restoration would be so hazardous to ones health.

Actually there’s lots about celluloid that is toxic. The silver-applicated soundtracks contain toxic carcinogenic chemicals, magnetic soundtracks are toxic as well, certain cleaning fluids are toxic, the fumes from vinegar syndrome are toxic, and it wouldn’t surprise me if projector oil is toxic as well. And let’s not forget that Nitrate can self-ignite if not stored below 20°C, and even when it’s not self-igniting it can be giving off toxic poisonous fumes simply from decomposition. When it does catch fire the smoke is poisonous.

Goldeneye - 35mm Scan and Preservation (a WIP)

I wonder if anyone can sync the Goldeneye Laserdisc’s 2.0 PCM Track to this scan? That would be a great alternative to the Optical track (i’m not sure if the scanning facility is equipped with Dolby SR Noise reduction, the Optical track would sound a lot better if it was applied!!)

The optical track is in Russian, but there is the theatrical dts audio available.

Beauty and the Beast - 35mm "Help Needed" (a WIP)

I hope to be in a position to get Lion King scanned in the new year, right now there’s no funding to do it. Once done that will complete the renaissance period, although it will still be desirable to get English prints of BATB and Little Mermaid of course. There are still some prints ahead of it Lion King, so realistically it may still be a while before I’m in a position to get it scanned. I could get a quote if you’re interested, but won’t be cheap.

Jungle Book (1967) 35mm Preservation! (Help needed!) (a WIP)
Time

I am giving out a FULL REEL preview of our scan. Note that this version is watermarked, the un-watermarked version is for donors only please do not redistribute that version. Here it is:

https://we.tl/t-SaFLqr3scb (link valid for SEVEN days only).

This is from the second print’s Reel 2 (the only reel from that print we scanned). It contains the “I wanna be like you” song and you can see - no splices in this version.

We have so far scanned the first 2 reels of the German print, Oops my mistake, I think we only have an un-calibrated test scan of those reels so far. If anyone is interested in helping to get the German version preserved please send a donation to Dr. Cooper we would both really appreciate it, and we can show you a preview from reel 2 of the German print. 😃

Thanks again to everyone who donated towards this to make it happen!

Not for this title specifically, but I do still need donations for Disney on 35mm. I’m currently making a public preview of Jungle Book from the 2nd print’s Reel 2. After that I will make a preview of poita’s Alice in Wonderland scan… I think I’ll prepare just one reel for a public preview for the time being. We’re hoping to get another AIW print (a German print) scanned soon, although that may still be a few months away before we’re able but we will get there. And there’s another print I need to get scanned very soon, and I’ll let everyone know about it when I can!

So been a while since I’ve updated on this. I can confirm we scanned Reel 2 from the alternate English print and it looks, and more importantly sounds, glorious. We have also access to a German print that will be transferred I believe entirely, so we’ll have the complete German version of this film as well. Contributions towards scanning it would be most welcome and should go directly to Dr. Cooper who is handling that scan.

Sleeping Beauty (1959) & Fantasia Kostal (1982) 35mm (Help Needed!) (a WIP)
Time

I don’t have enough to scan Tech mono unfortunately, a few pledged donations didn’t come through. However we shouldn’t need to scan it anyway as the Kostal print still has plenty of colour and also it doesn’t have any arc burn so it won’t need to be cropped.

I was asked by a member about the Sleeping Beauty print. I can say it’s an IB Technicolor print, and near mint condition. I have another print available but it is on faded Kodak SP and probably not worth scanning given how good the Tech print is. Preview of ALL reels are available to donors, and yes you can still contribute to these scans if you would like!

Soon I will be arranging the next Disney film or films to be scanned. Thanks so much to everyone who has donated to my projects it really means a lot and has enabled me to get a lot more scanned than I ever imagined!

Walt Disney Classics - 4K (donations sought) (several WIPs)
Time

Guys we have access to the following prints but will lose the access very, very soon. If anyone is interested in them get in contact, they are not a part of my agenda:

  • Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
  • 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
  • Bedknobs and Broomsticks
  • Mary Poppins
  • The Sound of Music (incomplete, reel 2 missing)
  • Die Hard (mint cond.)
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (mint cond.)

Condition of most of those prints varies from very good to mint. There are some I personally don’t think warrant the expense of scanning like Mary Poppins because it has a great HD release already, but if someone wants to pay the scanning bill it can be done.

Star Wars Documentaries on Film to be scanned. Donations welcome. (a WIP)

i know they cost alot, im not new to film preservation, ive attempted to buy and transfer film before, i was saying i would love to see it uploaded once everything has been payed for, i cant donate as i dont make that sort of money

I’m not having a go at you or anyone, my point was just that this stuff doesn’t come cheap at all and poita definitely needs some financial help on this one. These films aren’t going to scan themselves if poita can’t afford the bills. The price of these films is very high - it’s more money than I’ve ever spent all at once buying film, and I currently have some very expensive films - so I can only imagine in horror at the financial pressure that poita would be feeling at the moment. My message isn’t directed just to you, I want to do my part to remind people to please donate if they’re interested in this project - anything from $2 to $20,000+ would be accepted.

Speaking about this, I know that I’m not just speaking for myself when I say that we get questions all the time from people asking “when are you going to upload this”, or “can I get the raw scan now”. And while we all appreciate people’s enthusiasm for these projects, it is often missing the point of what we’re doing with our projects. They are to preserve film. It gets tricky to manage people’s expectations. I still have more Disney films to organise to scan and no funds at all at the moment myself, so I know all too well how the financial strain can bottleneck the work.

Anyway, to recap the SW documentary films cost €2,300 (!) to purchase so I would encourage everyone interested in them to think about what they could afford to donate towards the project. You would be supporting poita’s very important and very very generous preservation & restoration work.

Attack of the Clones 35mm - on eBay, bought - and now project thread (a WIP)
Time

Ha, it’s still my guess that it will fetch over $400… let’s see! 😄

I doubt there are any trolls involved in bidding. Some collectors will bid way more than you would think even if it just went unsold. We’ve seen this happen before, and I know who some of the collectors are that will bid high when they want something. The seller has a good reputation among collectors as well which I expect makes nervous bidders feel a lot more comfortable.

Best of luck though!

A few. I don’t want to just dump a list, but I’m currently getting Fantasia Kostal scanned. But it’s important to say we have had to pass on a lot of opportunities due to lack of funds or lack of interest. A few different people have said they want to do 20,000 Leagues for example, but nothing has so far come of it. We can scan it now this month from a good print and you wouldn’t need to worry about purchasing a print in unknown condition… or we can pass on it. There are other non-disney prints that can be done as well if there’s interest - there’s an Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade print that can be scanned for example, and it’s in very nice condition. Much nicer than the Raiders of the Lost Ark print was in for example.

My next project, hopefully, will be Alice in Wonderland. You’ll hear more on that in a few days.

In the meantime we have prints that can be scanned, but these are not a part of my agenda so I’m not going to have them scanned. However, other people show interest from time to time - if you want them scanned you need to commit to pay the scanning bill (you can fundraise as well of course). Contact me for a quote or more information.

Prints available to be scanned (all should be in very good condition, and we can check prior to scanning):

  • Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
  • 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
  • Bedknobs and Broomsticks
  • Mary Poppins
  • The Sound of Music (incomplete, reel 2 missing)

Sleeping Beauty (1959) & Fantasia Kostal (1982) 35mm (Help Needed!) (a WIP)

Just a reminder, I have video previews for donors (full reels). Any amount would be appreciated and you will get all the previews for both of these films (previous for Fantasia aren’t yet available, except for an 8 minute section). If you donate at least $40 I will also provide video previews of your choice of another scan, and if you donate at least $100 I will provide previews of all Disney films scanned to date that I’m responsible for.

We’re only $400 away from being able to afford to scan the tech mono print! We just need 8 people to donate $50 each! 😉 I don’t have much longer to make a decision on it, so send me a message or post in this thread if you want to help.

Thanks guys!
